movies/tv Would this make a good animated TV show?

The show would be set in an anthro (or furry for lack of a better term) world. While it may sorta be like the real world, there would also be fantasy and science fiction elements included.

The world is just like ours, but a bit more advanced. The sapient population would include all different kinds of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, sharks, insects and possibly even spiders. There would also be extinct/prehistoric animals (including dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptiles) and legendary creatures (including dragons and griffons) for the sapient population. Non-sapient wildlife would include things like fish, other invertebrates, and originally made mammalian, reptilian, and avian animals.

The world itself would have all kinds of different cultures. The show itself would mainly be set in a westernized nation, but many other nations would have their own cultures, like there would be a more traditional country with a population that's inspired by Egyptian mythology.

Besides the primary world, other worlds would exist. There would be extradimensional realms (like Marvel's Asgard and the planes from D&D) extrasolar planets, and even galaxies that would have their own civilizations, as well as an inner world beneath the main world. Each of them would be home to various races, like demons could come from other dimensions, alien races could come from other planets, and such.

The show itself would be about a girl (most likely a canid hybrid) who's living her life in a really big city. There would be stories about her, her friends, as well as her boyfriend (and possibly his friends too). However, there would also involve exciting adventure and suspense when conflicts and antagonists involve, whether from government agencies, greedy corporations, shadowy organizations, or very old legends that would soon come to life (and it doesn't end there).

How does that sound for a TV show?

In general story planning, be it written works, movies/television, or game developement, I stick by the idea that it's not the idea that truly defines the quality of something but instead how it's delivered or handled. The greatest idea can make for the worst experience if handled poorly, and even the most inane/simplistic of ideas can gain wide admiration when handled well.

On that note, in at least the terms of the content/species/setup, I don't think it's fair to judge how it would turn out.

However, I will share a concern or two: with all the different worlds, "extradimensional realms", civilizations, cultures, and species that come into play over the course of a single storyline... Well, it sounds like it would easily get a good deal convoluted. In the end I think it would either take the path of over-exposition, where the world is fleshed out in exchange for damaging the flow and impact of the story, or a lot of said world would just end up being cut for focus and clarity and never be explored. To me, it smacks a little of Batman Beyond or similar cartoons, only after attempting to ramp up the world in terms of complexity.

On the positive side of things, there would be a good deal of things to work with, and with all the worlds/civilizations and all that there's a lot of potential for things to go right, and for the story to be both interesting and thought provoking given the vast differences in world views present.

Though as I've been saying, ultimately it comes down to how it's handled.  ;) Whatever possible good points or bad points that matter the most depend on more than just the idea.  :)

I'm hung up on the fact that they're anthro.  Would they be anthro like Equestria Girls where they just have animal ears but still have a human face or would they have snouts and stuff?  I'd be cool with the first option.  The second option is just not my cup of tea.

Just letting you know I moved your thread to Media Discussion as the hypothetical questions deals with a television related matter.

Thanks. :)

If you read comics like Las Lindas, Rascals, and The Roomies, it's pretty much like that.

How about something along the lines of Bucky O'Hare?

I loved this goofy show, and I would welcome an updated non-comic serious version of the universe depicted.

I can tell you right now, "The Righteous Indignation" is an absolutely epic name for a privateer warship!

Plus, the psionic pilot and first mate Jenny was so cool!

Sounds sort of like old time cartoons (1930s) for animation style.  As to "good idea?", it depends on how it's handled.  "Girl in the city", lots of sitcoms had that.  Always liked the old Mary Tyler Moore show, for example.  Also, how old is your target audience? Plus, much depends on her job.  Trying to make it in show biz is a LOT different from a cop show, for instance.

Just occurred to me, she could be on a reality TV show like Survivors or Big Brother.  AFAIK, that hasn't been done yet.

I thought of something similar as a cgi/live action movie. However I got out of wanting to be in the movie making business. I was thinking of something more along the line of a furry PMC/mercenary group.  The lead guy had special powers but I grew out of it and now he's just a normal guy.  It evolved into a dark R rated movie kind of deal.

Basically IF this is a first draft, don't take it. Which in turn is why you're asking about it of course. You probably might need to spoon feed a tenth the info in the first few episodes.

The audience would have a cognitive overload if you plan on showing all of this in the beginning.

So go through a few drafts. Figure out the parts where you wanted to put something in because "it was cool" and decide whether or not you want to keep it. Basically it needs to just follow the narrative of the canid girl. Once you break away to talk about this cool thing, the audience is like "wait, wat?". Check out some writing videos on youtube or buy a book (kindle, google books or paper) that shows you how to write.  :)

↑ THIS!  SO TOTALLY THIS!  I would so watch it if it was anything like Drawn Together.  Granted the show wasn't completely funny but I loved the concept.

Compelling, I love the idea of an anthropomorphic universe for an animated television show, it can be CGI or flash, either way if the story can enrapture us, then I am sold. I love to write my own story of a furry story, with fictional locations and visuals, just like Equestria, I love flags perhaps I can draw flags for different regions, establish a civilian militia force, small businesses, diverse population, and a alphabet like Tengwar or Dwarvish Runes from the Lord of the Rings. I can visualise a world like Sonic the Hedgehog with Thundercats, or Swat Kats mixed in, finally, I think this could make a great animated show, it is the place to be creative, and assert your ideas to the screen, as canines, felines and other furries take us along with the adventure, similar to the Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings.

Oh far from it, it could actually have a more anime-esque style. The target audience was certainly be adults, but could also be enjoyed by teens. Personally, I haven't really decided what job she'd actually work. Most realistically she's working in some average paying job while living in an apartment.

Nope, but if I were to get into the TV business, I'd probably go through with something like this.

I'd prefer it to be made with programs like Toon Boom and TV Paint.

The whole storyline as a whole could bear a strong resemblance to MLP, but having a mix of slice of life, comedy, as well as romance, on top of having more exciting moments of conflict that may have action and suspense involved. How it could also work is that the main girl is living in an apartment in the city with her little sister, after their parents died in an accident. The story can focus on both her and the sister, as well as other characters. As for the little sister, when she goes into her new school she starts making friends there, she there can also be episodes about her.

And yes, the world would be based on things like Swat Kats and Sonic the Hedgehog (I never watched Thundercats so I know nothing about it). Speaking of Sonic, the world would also have an international military/security organization highly reminiscent of GUN, having things like aerial warships, VTOL gunships, mecha, land battleships, flying fortresses, submersible carriers, orbital weaponry and other highly advanced military warfare (and would also have its own intelligence arm). However, the nation the show is set in would also have its own military, like an army, navy, and air force (marines would most likely be a sub-brance of the navy). The nation's government would also have agencies based on real life agencies like FBI, Homeland Security, Secret Service, CIA, and a large military intelligence agency that would be like the NSA, DIA, NGA, and NRO mixed into one.

On top of that, there would be a share of large powerful megacorporations, like Umbrella from the RE series. Also in the show, we could learn about some of the holidays that take place in the world. The show's world would also have its own mythologies.

Well, the one thing I can say about successful TV series is you need good characters & good interaction between them.  If the audience can't care about the characters, the plot can't carry the series.  (It can for a movie, but not a series)

As to animated adult stuff, Futurama & Family Guy (among others) have proved it can be done, but it is still The Road Less Travelled By.
