gaming Anyone Want a Ponies' Game Night?

Colon Leftbracket

Recommended Posts

I'm seeing if any Pony is interested in setting up some kind of organized MLP Forums Ponies Game Night.

It could be an event that happens weekly/biweekly/monthly etc. That multiple Ponies get together on whatever online game is decided (obviously one that a large number of Ponies have).

This would probably require some form of staff (like 3 ponies is good) to organize these Game Nights. We could play any game that a large number of Ponies can play such as Minecraft, Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty, Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, Counter Strike, etc. It could be in private matches or even in a matchmaking party.

The basic gist of it would be first we would decide a date that most ponies who want involved can deal with, then we'd decide a game that most ponies want to play, and then we take into account the maximum number of ponies applicable to that game and start a sign up thread (I'm guessing first come first serve unless some ponies hog up the spots and some ponies get left out).

After the game night we then discuss our experience, what went great, what went wrong etc. And then start it again next week or month or whatever.

I'm guessing easy PC games like Minecraft or TF2 would be the easiest (TF2 is free on Steam!)

(I would need help since I'm a novice when it comes to setting up private servers on pc games like Minecraft.)

Thoughts? Ideas? Please share. Make sure to post what games you would like to play and what platform and what times your available to play.

EDIT: Also if you wish to you could post your username for what game platform you use though there is the official thread for that here: http://mlpforums.com/topic/95-steamlivepsn3ds-friend-code-central/

For PC stuff...

TF2 is always a decent choice. It's fairly approachable, has modest requirements, and is free. I'm sure there are enough of us that have played the game enough to offer some help to people that might be new to the game; I wouldn't be against tossing out some of my extra items to new folk, either.

As for other games...

F.E.A.R. is a fairly solid first person shooter with very good netcode and free multiplayer, like TF2. It's faily cookie-cutter for the most part, but the execution is quite nice. I own Blur and GRID on Steam, both of which are pretty entertaining as far as racers go.

I'm liking this idea. I say we should stick to PC games (like TF2 and the like) since not everypony has/likes playing on console. Howeer, if we were to play on console platforms, I'd go for some Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for Playstation 3 ;)

As for times, Friday and Saturday nights around 7pm EST is the best for me. Preferably on Saturdays since we could all talk about the new episode while we play :)

I would love to play a game with some fellow bronies! TF2 is a great choice I think, but I tend to be rather busy so I might not be able to make it :P (Tomorrow night would be perfect for me if it can be managed :D)

Well, I'm in, for sure. Team Fortress 2 is good, as is BFBC2, and several hl2 mods. Other than that, though, I really don't have a lot of online multiplayer games (unless you count Star Wars: Battlefront 2 for steam.)

PC is the easiest choice though I'm not too great at setting up sessions on pcs. The main reason why I asked for a staff is that let's say I was in charge of setting up Xbox sessions, we could have someone (more familiar than I preferably) in charge of setting up PC game nights, and even one for PSN. PC is obviously the easiest choice since most people require a pc to post here!

I am totally down with this, However I only game on my Xbox, so I'll join in for Xbox sessions if I have the games, if not then I'll probably join in party chat or something to still be a part of things. :)

This is also applicable too. One reason why I like Xbox Live more than other gaming sources is their party system is great! If there's an overwhelming urge of people wanting to play CoD or BF3 on Xbox Live I can still chat with them while they play. (I don't plan on buying either game)

And the same could be with skype, or other online chat services for the ponies out there who may not have the pc games planned for play.

Well I would actually buy that one if needed for a game night, but I don't see an overwhelming urge of people wanting to play SWBF2 :P

That's actually some brilliant thinking! :o

I definitely see TF2 being the most popular since the basic requirement to play is a half decent internet connection and if your computer can run it. I don't play TF2 much at all but I think I'll get back into it now for this.

I have my moments

But yeah, I am sure we could have fun with those chat services too for the ones who aren't playing the game at the moment/don't have it. And it would be great for newer members to meet others too!

I'm all down for holding MLP Forums gaming nights. We have a Steam group that we could post announcements from. The forum calendar is also perfect for organizing this kind of thing.

I really think it would be best to keep such nights to PC only. We all have computers, not to mention we can get TF2 for free on them at the very least. Consoles are really just going to make things unnecessarily difficult.

As for the technical side of things, MLP Forums runs on a VPS with 4 GB of RAM, dual quad Xeons, a RAID10 array of 15k drives, and a 100 Mb uplink. It has ample room for another game or two in addition to all the websites and the 24/7 Minecraft server it already hosts. Anything that will run on CentOS is fair game, which includes everything based on the Source engine.

However, even though I can provide the VPS, I really know nothing about the best ways to host games, so I'd be willing to work with someone to set them up, upload custom maps, etc.

That is one beast of a computer you have there. I am impressed. Thanks! I can't wait for all of this to come together. The closest we've come so far is me accidentally running in to Petey in TF2.

Yeah I'm not all that experienced in setting up private servers and such on PC games myself, but I will try my best to learn if no one else here knows how to host games. I never knew we had a Steam Group I was going to suggest we make on for this, but we're ahead of the game! AND a Minecraft server? Not sure how many people have Minecraft here (If you care for PC gaming at all I highly recommend it!) but that could also be useful for game nights!

I figure the console game nights would be far less official side events that would happen "whenever".

TF2 is going to be the main highlight of all of this! It's free, it runs on most pcs, it's not too hard to mod (I am currently attempting to ponify my TF2), its on Steam, and it's so appropriate for Bronies because it is based around TEAMWORK!

...Minecraft would be a close second if we had enough people. I also recommend CSS, but I believe that cost around $15 but most pc gamers have it.
