Celestia being overpowered in certain fan fiction?

Princess Celestia being overpowered in certain fan fiction? Certain, as in quite a lot of fan fiction.

Have you ever noticed in some stories where Princess Celestia is insanely overpowered? Powers like being able to bend reality and open portals into other universes at will, can move planets of her home solar system at will... and even in said stories take an atomic bomb to the face and be fine.

Would you be terrified to be in the presence of such a OP Celestia? (I know I would be... even if she's a friendly and only wants a hug) What do you think of these fan fiction?

Celestia was defeated by a powered-up Queen Chrysalis...so I think that Celestia is powerful, but no way is she THAT powerful.

And yes, unless if I was powerful myself I would likely be a little bit skittish around such a powerful Celestia.

I like Fan Fictions with realistic power levels, but a Celestia this powerful seems a bit unrealistic in my opinion.

It also depends on the context a bit, I think. I mean, if you have battlelestia, you'd like her to be a bit strong - but only if there are enemies just as strong, or even stronger. Of course, in a normal setting would OP-lestia a bit... meh.

Whether it was justified or not would depend on the fic in question. It would obviously have to be alternate universe as canon Celestia isn't anywhere near that powerful but I can see an alternate universe Celestia being that powerful so long as the author puts in the effort to make it believable. Give the readers sufficient reason to believe and a good story and it won't matter. There are all kinds of great stories both official and in fanfics where characters could arguably be considered "overpowered" but seem to work due to the story calling for it.

Read one where she literally brought back Soarin' from the dead after he got beat really badly. Many fan fics bring her onto the level of an immortal god but that is how a lot of people in this fandom see her.

Going off purely how the show represents her I'd say that she is weaker than Discord but more powerful than almost everything else in Equestria (she was beaten by Chrysalis after all).

Don't get me wrong, I really like Celestia, but I don't like to over exaggerate any character's abilities.  It makes them dull and uninteresting in my humble opinion.

Powers like being able to bend reality

Unlikely through her own powers, although there's a lot of that in Equestria. See Inspiration Manifestation, magical comics, etc.

open portals into other universes at will

Does the Equestria Girls mirror portal count? Depending on how you see comic canon, she technically helped build it...

moving planets of her home solar system at will

Not all that difficult, considering what she hauls around every day when she wakes up.

And even in said stories take an atomic bomb to the face and be fine.

People really oversell the strength of atomic bombs; the strongest nuclear weapon we've ever deployed wouldn't begin to scratch most fictional characters, including anyone important in MLP.

It depends on how she's depicted, since Celestia's powers and abilities usually work to serve the plot. If she's nice and uses her powers responsibly, then it's fine. If it's like 60+% of Celestia depictions... run for cover.

You see, I could write a good fan fiction by just having this thing attempt to destroy the entire universe.

fury_of_nuclear_chaos_by_xlegendariumx-d

But then make the alicorn characters OP and unite all of Equestria's and even the universes magic against it (spirit bomb perhaps?) so that they could actually fight well against it.  I could make it similar to when Luke Skywalker took down the Death Star in Star Wars.

Scenarios like these are when OP characters are fine by me.

Agreed, some fan-fics make her seriously OP. In most fan-fics she was supposed to be the one who created ponies (from single cellular organisms). That basically makes her a god and it is just too much.

She's usually that powerful in the face of multiversal fan fictions probably as a subtle ploy to prove that ponies are the 'superior race'.

Seriously, there was a infamous Pokemon vs Ponies debate thread on another website whereas bronies would fanboy the shit out of Discord and Celestia, and absolutely ignore any valid points involving Legendary Pokemon with similar reality bending powers. Hell, they were even throwing in their own headcanon....

The only thing that can survive a nuclear bomb is an overpowered mary sue/gary sue. Or an overpowered god or something... but even god can bleed and die if the right challenger steps forth.

He's probably right, if you slap Galactus with a hydrogen bomb, he probably won't get a scratch. I mean, the guy survived the Big Bang.

Drop such a device on top of Canterlot, then countless of ponies including two certain Alicorns will be disintegrated. Let the fanboying commence.

Azathoth, the cosmic nuclear god of the universe that can create galaxies by blinking, versus a crazy OP cultist that called him forth.

Did he win?  No, he lasted all of 2 seconds before Azathoth obliterated him, and everything around him, with a single blast of pure energy.  But I give props to him for taking him on.

Not sure if any of you are familiar with Lovecraftian fiction but that is what I call OP.  If the ponies were to ever call forth or anger this thing then all hope would cease to exist.  But once again, anyone is welcome to argue with me.

From what I recall they're actually unable to die. They're outside the cycle.

The Lord of Murder (Bhaal) was killed by another god.

Well she is a Goddess so how could you not expect for people to make seem "overpowered"? I am sure that people make her out to be more powerful than she should be in fan fictions though.

Overpowered generally makes bad for story telling... unless she's a villain... but even the OP can be defeated by an even greater OP.

I agree what sense does it make to make a character so powerful that they can't even be exploited in anyway? I agree with you on this.

I think it would end in a stalemate if something as powerful as Azathoth fought with it.

Azathoth, according to the stories, is said to be at the center of infinity, drives any mortal insane if they look at it funny, has more power than anything in existence, and is a universal omnipotent.

Azathoth is also neither living nor dead, it's a force of nature, so the gods would just end up obliterating the multiverse as they fought until the end of time itself

If you're not going to take the argument seriously, I don't think I should either...

You're right; everything has a limit; as far as fictional universes go, ponies are actually pretty weak overall. Unfortunately, weak is relative here, since their bottom line is actually far above our ceiling. We don't stand a chance against them.

Then why bother responding? Actually, that's the spirit! Don't take it seriously. Edited by Psychedelicize
