I got into a sword fight with a friend.

I don't want to fight, that's not why I do what I do. I do it for physical, mental, and spiritual self improvement.

I get the feeling though that you aren't taking this little debate as seriously as I am. Am I correct in that assumption?

Yea I am sortof bored with it now.

This one time, I got into an epic sword fight with some weirdo in a parking lot.  When our sword blades met, it was as though electricity passed through our weapons; sparks flew as they clashed.  Being accustomed to this sort of thing, I soon got the better of my opponent.  I admit: I got a little too into it and cleaved his head from his body. o_O  As a result, more of that electricity I was talking about before (a lot more) passed through me; picking me up off the ground.  When this inexplicable and sudden "storm" had finally passed, I felt as though I had become stronger, somehow.  It was as if the skill of my fallen opponent had transferred over to me.  It was pretty cool.

I didn't get in trouble for killing the dude, really.

Yeah yeah, "there can be only one" and all that.

Idunno.  Perhaps there can be two.  Or three!  I'm open-minded like that.

Regardless, good movie. Shame the game adaptation got canceled.

I thought the first film was the best.  The second one confused me.  I don't remember the third one.  And I didn't like how the fourth one ended.  The series was okay; though Duncan was never as cool as Connor.

I know how to use a wide variety of firearms but I'd like to learn how to use a sword properly at some point.  Not to actually fight of course I just greatly appreciate those that are skilled at wielding them.  And I'm kind of envious whenever I run into someone that actually knows how to wield one.  And yes, I'm 21 years old and I'm intelligent enough to understand that a sword is not a toy.  The same way that I was taught that a firearm is not a toy.

To any of you sword experts out there which would you recommend for a beginner?  I'd like something short like a wakizashi or maybe something longer.

Samurai Jack cosplay for next year perhaps?

Started training with my dad(who was in the SCA) when I was three with flyswatters and cardbard pieces. Haven't practiced in a while tho.

That is called LARPing. Dont try to join that.

It was probably the SCA(They don't LARP, they re-enact midevil fighting and have a whole ranking system, its actually pretty cool)

The SCA is pretty hardcore, their swords sometimes accidentally break bones(That hard) and gigantic bruises will always happen. They even do jousting with horses the way they used to do it back then(You have to break your lance on your opponent when you pass by them, and a few unlick people actually died)

Well I would recommend you first find a martial art you are comfortable with, Eastern or Western. No system employs only one weapon with no unarmed techniques.

You might want to look into Historical European Martial Arts or HEMA.

For specific weapons you are probably looking for a messer.

Remember though, you wouldn't JUST learn how to use that weapon. It would be a part of a whole.

Well it's a serious pursuit. They are practicing the same kind of tourney style events that would have happened hundreds of years ago.

I used to fence when I was a wee lad and apparently I was pretty good and ended up helping as an assistant instructor at 14 years old. I guess I left because it wasn't highspeed enough for me. Then I went into the Army briefly and LOVED MACP (Modern Army Combatives Program) and trained in some combat knife training with a battle buddy. Medically discharged for bull reasons and now looking at fencing again...once I stop working weekends.

"I could have been happy above if I'd never donned the copper carapace and dipped my head beneath the waves to hear the muddled man-made sounds. Distorted and dreamlike droning. The whir and thrashing of a distant propeller, the tumultuous thundering thud of fogbound freighters. Mud underfoot, no sights, except the grasp of a diver's trained hand, dreaming of distant lands knowing all the while this is what I love, not the blue skies and wondering faces above. Canvas, rubber, brass, copper, and glass. Leather and lead, mud and sweat, heaving around in dark, damp depths seldom seen by most yet talked about by all. As if a sunny, happy place where mermaids and seahorses play and chests of gold are lain bare, untarnished by salt and time for all to grasp who are bold enough to go below..." -"Deep Sea Diver", Steven L. Waterman

I get into sword fights with friends multiple times a week. Comes with being a fencer. I've been doing it for ten years and recently begun to go tournaments on the World Cup circuit, so I'm getting better and better

Nope, I'm a sport fencer all the way. There is apparently a HEMA club not far from my home though, so I will be trying it at some point since it seems really cool.

I'm fencing for about a year now, but fencing isn't really realistic, with the right of attack and everything. :/

But my sister does kendo and iaido, and those are pretty spot on. :3

I used to fence, did not forget about how yet. Does that count? :-)

What Frost said. Fencing is a sport, not a martial art, which is why I didn't pursue it despite being the best in my class. German Longsword, even Kendo are closer to true martial arts than sport fencing.

I was gonna try fencing, But my dad gave me knowledge that's useful in the SCA, so I'm gonna show up to fighter practice and hope not to get my head taken off. I was watching my dad spar with this one guy and he hit him so hard with his polearm I thought he musta broke something, but it was fine.
