Fun Things Cut from Episode 100

Well first off I'm not a big fan of the 100th episode and it's structure is part of the reason.

Secondly I Loathed the Mane 6 (or thier portayal anyways) in that episode. Sorry but it was an absolute shit joke IMO.

And thirdly, I never said the Mane 6 would be in my idea, just Twilight ad an off screen narrator (though I could imagine a quick side comment done by Pinkie)

If you didn't like the episode that's fine. I liked the portrayal of the Mane 6, it was done very cleverly, showing them fighting the baddie of the week while letting us have a look at what goes on in the background of a typical episode. It's not a joke. And Twilight being the narrator does focus on the Mane 6 (doesn't have to focus on all of them). She's the one driving the story, whereas in the episode we have, it's driven by the BG ponies' stories for a change.

That was the thing. For once, it's not the actions of the Mane 6 that drive the story, in fact they're almost irrelevant. Even the bugbear turns out to be more directly related to Bonbon than the Mane 6, who get to play the part of the hapless (albeit more successful, although it looks like Bonbon had a big part to play) Royal Guards that we often see failing against the big bad.

And that's what I don't like, that segregation of the Mane 6 from the rest of Ponyville. I'd like to think the Mane 6 are normal ponies for the most part and just get stuck into the epic story line every once in a while. Episode 100 more or less shattered that, basically saying the Mane 6 are different than all of Ponyville, they are chosen, special, more important, at least to me.  This is why I disliked them in the episode.  And that's why I prefer my idea, cause it would show Twilight interacting with the rest of the town and getting caught up in their shenanigans, being a part of the town, not being separated from them.  This is also why I argued that the Mane 6 shouldn't have been in the 100th episode in the first place with what they were doing with it since then you wouldn't have to deal with the separation of the Mane 6 from Ponyville.

Also I consider it a joke because it's winking at the camera, saying "Hey look the Mane 6 are background ponies in the background pony episode. Aren't we clever?"

that would have been great, except that the experience with the background characters would have been less personal. Maybe next time they plan for more background poneh shenanigans  :smug:

Not necessarily, for example, you could have Twilight go interview Doctor Whooves and he give a long winded speech when one of his inventions or experiment or what have you goes off in the background and he's scrabbling to get things under control. (Also you could have him ask Twilight for help and have her go "Nope documentary workers must not interfere with their filming subjects" or something along those line and have the Doctor stare dumbfounded at her)

But, like it or not, they ARE chosen and special. They are the manifestations of the Elements of Harmony, and connected directly to the Princess of Friendship. They may be down to earth, but they are special. They have personal dispensation to stay at Canterlot castle, something Canterlot folk make a BIG deal of, and they have friggin THRONES in Princess Twilight's castle! And they're immortalized in stained glass in Canterlot castle, being an instrumental part of Equestrian history.

I don't think 'normal' ponies get thrones in castles, or sent on special missions by a magical cutie mark map. ;)

Then the show should just admit that. Say that other ponies could never be like them or do what they've done and get rid of the SOL style story.

Why do they have to get rid of the SOL style story? I liked it, and if you've noticed this season seems to want to let others in on the fun a bit. Ep 1-2 had the other 4 ponies take the spotlight for a bit (double diamond and co).

All of those things sounded really fun. I would have laughed if they put Flash in there wondering why no one likes him. Still I love the way it turned out and it's fun to hear how much work has gone into it.

Because extraordinary people doing normal things is boring and preachy to me. It's like reading Superman with a story line about Clark Kent meeting a newspaper deadline.

See the thing I hate is Destiny. I hate Chosen Ones, Fate or anything that says, there characters are special.  I'm for Free Will.  Force your way down a path you chose to take and do it all on your own. That's the way things roll. To me having the Mane 6 be special undercuts the message of the show.  See to be it's about how six normal ponies, who come from all walks of life, though their friendship, can overcome anything.  By saying they're super special and the their friendship is a unique one blessed by the heavens or faith and what have you, you take away the human (for lack of a better world) element and you make them far less relatable because you could never be or have something like that.  Basically it's like saying everyone is special and unique, but these six are MORE special and unique compared to everyone, and you have no hope of ever being as good as they are, at least to me.

They became special. Twilight had to earn everything she has. They are the opposite of what you're annoyed at.

But why? And if you say they're the Mane characters, that's an excuse not a reason.

See to me the Mane 6 are unique, like everyone else, each having different experiences because they all choose and think differently.

Being special is them being chosen by some high power, arbitrarily given greater importance over everypony else.  Imagine if people like this actually existed. I doubt people would act the same way the ponies in Ponyville do. If they are special they should acknowledge it and throw off the pretense that anyone can be like them, because since they're special, they can't.

Because they became her friends? And they were all connected by that Sonic Rainboom. Heh, reminds me of Sense8.

But anyone can become friend, ie they're not special (as I've defined it for the conversation anyways) they're unique and anyone can do what they've done. Which more or less goes against the whole separation of Twilight and her friends from Ponyville that is in the show. Also haven't seen that movie.  Twilight being speical is not something I'm fond of because a large part of our culture values self determination, that if you work hard and follow your passions you can do anything.  While Twilight does have this, there is also the implication she is destined for it, that there is an inherent unfairness, because there is always questions in the back of my mind. If Twilight was worthy to become a princess and Alicorn, why weren't her friends? Why aren't they worthy? What makes Twilight more worthy than anyone else?  And if Alicornhood represents true understanding, then why aren't they going out of their way to make as many ponies alicorns as possible?

Because.... she completed Starswirl the Bearded's spell?

She earned every bit of it. If she hadn't put in the ridiculous amount of effort and study to be the expert in magic she is, she'd just be another unicorn. And while others are friends, these are her BEST friends.

I did mention that Twilight did work for it, but it was clear that she was "destined" for this, which IMO goes against self determination because you aren't acting of your own choice, someone else is making it for you and that the world is not fair and chooses to play favorites with some over others and everyone just has to deal with it. And instead of dealing with stuff like that, they keep playing up Equestria as some kind of paradise where everyone is happy and content with being stuck in a position they had no real choice in.
