War in MLP:FIM apparently is canon

There's something quite disturbing about that, to me, to be honest. I got into MLP for the escapism, liking how sweet and innocent and wholesome it seemed in the early seasons, and how it seemed like they didn't have what cruddy bad stuff that we do in our world- war, political issues, violence, etc. But its become far more apparent in season 5, that the line between MLP and our world is steadily being blurred. The S5 premiere had massive unsettling vibes, with its communist, war propaganda and brainwashing tactics brough by Starlight Glimmer. Political summits, in a more recent episode, Now Yaks threatening war on Equestria....it jst feels...wrong, to have these topics in MLP.

But what does everyone else think on war and political matters being spotlighted in such a show?

I though it might be with the building evidence we have already seen in the show, so this is nothing new. Though war in this universe is likely not anything like ours ... I mean ... they fought with pies in Appleoosa. :)

I forgot about that. I guess I just didn't see that as a war, though, since it was just between a town and the residents they moved in on, as opposed to war with national leaders behind it, as seen in "party pooped"

Over a barrel says hello.

This.

Also, in It's About Time, Twilight alludes to the possibility of an "epic pony war" in the future.

War has clearly been a canon thing in the series for quite some time.

Hearing the Yak declaration of war was unexpected, I'll give you that. I'm surprised they out and out stated it, since there have only been subtle implications in the show previously.

Yes.

This makes the world a more interesting place and somewhat realistic place.

Also..... Twilight Sparkle once said in the show itself: Is there some sort of epic pony war in the distant future or something?

War has been a thing in the mlp fim universe for a while, now. First war thing we saw was against the changelings, then we had Tirek in season four and now the Yaks.

The Conflict in Apploosa was a civil dispute. It was moar of a brawl than an all out war.

But of course you also have dragons, hostile ponies like Sombra and Tirek:

So violent conflicts are a very real possibility. With well over 9000 viewers watching I might add.  :umad:

Oh, I was just commenting on the method of combat within the historical context of the Apache Wars. IRL conflicts like Bleeding Kansas utilized some of the same methods of combat seen in war, but on a smaller scale. It seemed to me applying a the non 'lethalness' of the Appleoosan issue to a larger scale conflict like a war is relevant. Considering we may see a similar conflict later in the season, I'm curious if they will continue the trend of 'silliness' when handling small disputes.

On top of what's been mentioned already there are other things to think about.

Rainbow Dash has mentioned she's as fast as a bullet and of course we have Tank was named because he is "Built like a tank" implying that armored warfare either exists or existed at one point and is now banned!

Also according to the play on "Heath's Warming Eve" Equestria was founded during a three-way war between Pegasi, Unicorns, and Earth Ponies over land.

That wasn't really a war, was it?

I'll add this point to the others listed above: It may be pretty and pastel, but Equestria is far from a peaceful place. Hell Ponyvillians were looking at a monster attack with as much jadedness as your average new yorker. Yes while that isn't the same as war it does show they are not strangers to violence and physical battle.

Correction: They were close to war before each leaders advisor told them to chill out.

My bad-it's been a while since I saw that one.

I'd assume that's just because of the stuff that's happened in Ponyville over the past five seasons.

My own memory's fuzzy on this, but I'm not sure they were close to one either...

I think war is a Yak concept in mlp, which is why we haven't seen it mentioned so far. War would never happen in Equestria between ponies, but Yaks have an entirely different country and culture....

So in spite of the many other references in past episodes, no one is bothered by the realstic portrayal of a fantasy world that many got into, thinking such things like militarism, armed forces, cmmunism, propaganda, brainwashing, and uch wouldn't exist in colorful pastel pony world of friendship and harmony?

Just seems to go against the show's very theme

I wouldn't be so sure. As others pointed out, Twi guesses that her actions might lead to an epic pny war, in the future, in "it's about time. " and Rainbow Dash has mentioned neededing a pet that's as fast as a bullet, to keep up with her. And named her pet tortoise after a miltary vehicle....

Nope. Equestria pretty much seemed deadly from day one. Aside from an incompetent nuisance villain that tried to overthrow Celestia and tried to bring out eternal night there are several creatures in Equestria that have tried to maim, eat or kill them such as Dragons, Hydras, Ursas and Cockatrices.

Pests that could have devastated ponyville by eating all the food (parasprites)

A literal god of chaos!

Xenophobia (Treatment of Zecora and the Buffalo)

Tartarus itself! (which had Cerberus and Tirek)

Beings that can disguise themselves as your loved ones and feed off of you (Changelings)

Creatures like the Windigo that brought about a famine and nearly froze the three tribes to death

The list goes on! When you really examine it Equestria never really was built up to be an innocent utopia!

I really don't see why everyone is freaking out about the POSSIBILITY of war being a canon thing. From day one equestria was deadly, with evil forests, monsters galore and invasions and takeovers seemingly once a fortnight! Think about all that happened 1000 years ago and during the founding of equestria. I would honestly be surprised if there NEVER was a war... And I think Twilight mentioning war was single-handedly a product of her being very knowledgable about equestrian history, knowing that war has happened in the past.
