Games that have not aged well

I think the overall franchise for Sonic hasn't really been doing good. Now the first game was really good obviously, but as time passed Sonic has received some tough love over the years. Sonic has fallen from his throne of the first game to games that are just dirt today like Sonic Free Riders and Sonic 06. The latest games now just seem unfinished, not really true to the Sonic spirit and in the case of Sonic 06 is riddled with game breaking glitches and basic problems that passed through BETA tests.

I can agree with that, did you see the Sonic Dream Collection? That game looks horrifying.

I would say Castle Wolfenstein. Not the old 3d shooter, im talking about the very first one from 1981.

Not only does the game not look any good for today, also the controls are just horrible. Whenever you touch a wall, it looks like the game is glitching out, whenever you move, you move endless until you press an another direction button.

Also you cant aim with the gun in any direction, so you have to move ( which is already horrible in this game ) right in front or nearby an enemy then punch a button to stop moving, and then still aim with your gun and then push another button to actually shoot ! :baconmane:  Most of the time it just doesnt work. You just die. :maud:

And you die with just one hit and sometimes the game just decides to teleport you right in front of an enemy after you die, so that you instantly die again in your second try. There is also no save function as far as i can tell and every place looks the same.

( well, that far that i have played anyway  :please: )

And there is more, but this could just be my emulator :

The game has no sound. No music and no sound effects.

If an enemy crashes into a wall, the game glitches out ( the same as if you touch the wall ) and you cant see anything for a moment and most of the time you just die. Because if you touch a wall, you cant move for a short time but if an enemy touches a wall, the game will still glitch out but the enemy can move all the time and just get you anyway. Yeah, because thats totally fair  :eww:

Also the Introduction screen, where the story is explained, doesnt even appear the first time you play this.

The introduction screen just appears randomly if you die. That means sometimes you can die 5 times and the introduction screen still doesnt show up...yeah, thats cool, its not that i want to know the story or what im actually supposed to do before i play or anything  :fiery:

Castle Wolfenstein is just a terrible game. In all aspects. I cant believe it created a franchise which still exists today...the first game just isnt fun anymore  :nom:

The original two generations of Pokemon can definitely said to have not aged very well. It's funny because it has never been a series of massive changes from generation to generation, but instead a series of smaller improvements that have gradually turned the newer generations of Pokemon into a much more playable experience. One example right off the top of my head is the PC in the game. In both of the original generations, the PC system is unbearable. Very clunky, and requires lots of loading. You also would be unable to catch a Pokemon if the current box you were on was full.

It's things like that, that make the original two generations a pain to play now. That doesn't discount them from potentially being better games than entries further down the line, but it makes them very hard to play.

The original StarFox for the SNES.

Man, I love this game. I really do.

After playing the 3DS remake of StarFox64 and parts of Assault it got me thinking... Maaaan, this game really has not aged well.

It's like Superman64... only playable.

I'm probably going to get a ton of hate for this...but I don't think Final Fantasy 7 has aged well. I never played FF7 as a kid and I only started because of the news of a remake and with how many people say it's the best game ever made. Without the benefit of the nostalgia however, I can't say the game is anywhere near as good. All playing this game did was remind me of a much better PS1 Rpg that has aged well that I quickly began playing instead.

For starters, even for early PS1 the graphics aren't that good. The controls are confusing (I literally spent the first five-minutes of the game fighting with the controls) and movement is rather clunky since this was before the analog stick was implemented. The gameplay isn't anything to write home about either. Maybe I just haven't yet reached the point where the game becomes amazing, but I've played long enough that most games would have already hooked me in.

Star Wars Battlefront 2. I'm not that big of a gamer these days, but sometimes I would join in when my bro and his friends were playing it. Poor graphics and glitchy game play compared to today. Pretty sure it froze up once or twice too.

Another star wars game that I loved when I was younger was rogue squadron. A few years ago I picked it back up and it was harder to play then when I was a kid. I don't quite know why.

Definitely the Sonic Adventure games. Nowadays I just consider them ridiculous on so many levels. There's a few PC games that I've tried and just don't get along with compared to modern design philosophy. System Shock 2, Alone In The Dark, King's Quest, there's some others that escape my mind right now and I'm not even sure if they were just rubbish in the first place.

I'm not a medical expert, psychologist, psychiatrist, teacher or love doctor. Take my words with a pinch of salt, yeah?

I am an experienced cook, musician and care worker though, so that's something.

  • 4 weeks later...

Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing or Superman 64.

I don't think those games can even age. XD They are like, eternally bad. :P

This one is kinda odd but I have been thinking of it lately, am I the only one that thinks that the Left 4 Dead games have already not aged very well? I went back to L4D2 a long while back and it already feels so antiquated in many areas. :|
