Should Spike be written out of FiM?

When has Spike had character development?

Relatively, he has. I mean, it seems like that whole concept is almost entirely foreign to this show, but at least to me, it feels like Spike isn't quite as immature as he once was. To a small extent, to be sure, but noticeable.

What concept is almost entirely foreign to the show? Character development?

Yeah, it seems to be a pretty common complaint among fans that any lessons the Mane 6 learn in an episode, they seem right back to their old behavior the very next one. Can't really say I disagree.

Maybe the show needs to give Spike something to be passionate about. Kinda like Twilight is passionate about learning new things, Rarity is passionate about being creative, and Pinkie is passionate about making everyone smile. Give him that one thing that keeps him going aside from his friends.

Just not let Spike become main character. Look at how amazing he is in Rainbow Rock, Amending Fences, Crystal Empire, Lesson Zero etc. He's supportive and Smart not Dumb and mess up in his own episode. Just write Spike in any episode I stated above then everyone will love him. Some episode like Spike at your service ruined his reputation..

The most recent episode shows Spike as being self-centered. I would have thought that his past episodes would have cured that, but some writers are not writing him as the character he should be by now. He shouldn't be taken off the show, but he needs to be portrayed way better than his last debacles.

No, the writers need to buck up and understand his character better. He's a child, but he's far from immature. Stop making him look like an idiot, and greedy in his episodes. Play off his strengths. He's great for moral support, and helping others out. Why not make an episode like that? Instead of him learning a lesson at the end, make it be the one where he teaches the lesson. I think that would make for an interesting episode.

As others have said, as a supporting character he is great. He was great in the pilot, Amending Fences, and the like.

He was f**cking awesome in Equestria Girls, he was arguably one of best characters in the movie. They just need to write Spike more like they did in that movie.

Spike is good character but episodes that focuse on him are quite bad in my opinion I really dont want to watch himself screwing up all the time =/

Pretty much this. Every time an episode focuses on him, the writers make it like he regresses from the last time he made some progress. Each and every episode which focuses on him always centers around greed in some shape or form. I can see how that makes sense as that is every dragon's primary sin as well as defining feature, and you can chalk it up to that. But as viewers of the series, we'd like to think Spike is above base instincts, and with good reason. Multiple times have the writers managed to have Spike rise above those instincts. But that is literally all the happens when he's the focus, and they all follow a common formula which typically involves destruction of something or other due to Spike's own greed and negligence, something we all thought he'd gotten over the last time he had to learn something. It would be nice if Spike-centric episodes focused on another type of flaw instead of having him regress almost completely as a character for the sake of it.

Nah, man.  I ain't the biggest Spike fan, but I like him from time to time, and would like to see him become a more developed and useful character.  I think Spike oughta finally grow a pair of wings and step up to become one of a new Mane 7, rather than just a static chime-in character, which requires a more concrete definition of his personality and actual self-interest.  I doubt that will happen, though.  He'll probably just languish in the role of Twilight's exotic pet and mailman from now until the end of time.

Even if he SHOULD be "written off" from FiM (I think is not the case)...

How would you do it in a way that is believable?

Without also removing Twilight alongside with him; or creating an horrible situation were she "does not need him anymore; so it [the dragon] has to get out of her life"; breaking then the same promise she did to him in two ocasions [in the Everfree Forest, after a "near death encounter" with a dragon, and later in front of "Sombra´s Door" after they experienced their worst nightmares].

The only thing I could reason is the Discord/Treehugger "random inaccessible dimension" venting Spike to an unknown somewhere/sometime  (be it done by a villan as punishment, a freak magical natural ocurrence; or purely accidental side effect of something unexpected).

Pulling an heroic sacrifice that does not technically involve "death" (age reversion into an egg, becoming a soul gemstone, one-way-trip to the distant past/future) in order to prevent some cosmic catastrophe; that would be a little too much for Spike to do on porpouse.

In any case, the multi-year-long depression Dis-Astrae the Alicorn Twilight would become after that would progress into her personal "Start of Darkness"; forcing the series to end when her friends had no other choice but to stop her...

IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN!

Spike is one of my favourite characters. He arguably has the best and most realistic personality of all the Mane 6 put together in my opinion. Getting rid of him, would be like getting rid of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, which would be a terrible idea xD

How would you feel, hypothetically speaking, if the writers took Spike away at the end of the S5 finale to find out things about himself and bring him back midway through S6 a stronger and more interesting character? Like up to par with the mane six to the point where he can help them out? During that time, he could come across other dragons and they could help him discover things about himself. Kinda like an off screen fanfic.

Of course I'd like to see this kind of development on screen but when a show like this already has 9 main characters with the mane six and CMCs, there may be no time to develop Spike.

The only way he's getting written off is if he pulls off a massive heroic sacrifice to save all of Equestria and Twilight's arc in the next season is her dealing with his loss.

No Spike shouldn't be written off of the show. The problem with Spike is that he never interacts with anyone.  At least in Season 1 he had some moments with Pinkie Pie but he barely has any screen time with any of the Mane 6 OR CMC save for Twilight and once in a Blue Moon Rarity. Have him interact with your cast writters! You do this with all your other characters, Spike should not be an exception.

Even if they were going to write Spike out of the show by killing him, which they wouldn't/shouldn't do, It wouldn't work because he hasn't done enough with the mane six aside from Twilight and Rarity to leave an emotional response.

In the end, I think Spike needs more love from the writers than the fanbase. The fans are just reacting to what the writers have given them.

What if Spike was taken out of the show at the end of S5 and put back in midway through S6 as that better character we've been wanting to see? It could be like hitting the reset button since the writer's have struggled with Spike so much since S2.

I apologize if double posting is illegal on this forum but I must ask.

As a Spike episode, how would you feel if the plot has to do with Spike being afraid of what he'll grow up and turn into? To the point where he'll have to leave Equestria? You could have him go to Canterlot or the Crystal Empire with Twilight to find legit info on dragons and connect Spike's worries to the Sombra's nightmare door. It could be one of those "Don't put too much worry on the future. Focus more on the present." sort of morals.

No; honestly, spike is a great character, its just they haven't been writing him very well.
Look at him in episodes like lesson zero for example; him being a slightly snarky voice of reason are great. Likewise, look at him the comics: he is really nice in the Nightmarity arc, or the celestia/spike comic.

They just need to stop writing him as an idiot kid who's a moron is all. More power ponies and Inspiration manifestion, less Princess spike.

no. He is part of the mane cast and a good brother-character for Twilight. The writers just need to track down what they are doing wrong (with his episodes) and fix it.

There needs to be an episode on how important Spike's role as a supporting character is. Maybe Spike leaves for some reason when other ponies tell him things not so nice and treat him like a second class pony. When Spike is not there Twilight has a harder time juggling with all her tasks and Rarity also finds it hard to work without Spike's help. And everypony realizes just how important Spike was.

I would like that but it would seem like they want him more for the services he provides and not for Spike as a character. So the question is how to work around that.

Really the main thing the writers need to stop doing in Spike episodes is stop changing his character to fit in with the moral of the episode. Actually have him TEACH the moral for once. He can learn morals but he doesn't need to be hit with the idiot stick to do it. That would make him learning the lesson at that point annoyingly contrived.
