Actually I believe oranges received their name before the colour was called orange. Although I think that they had a different name for the colour, can't remember what it was though.

Orange carrots being sold in America was a publicity favor to the Netherlands (by way of the House of Orange, their Royal family) after they rendered financial assistance to the fledgling nation, at the conclusion of the War of Independence in 1776.

 

Carrots can be bred to be a number of colors, including white, green and purple. Carrots being ubiquitously orange in North America is due to the prominence and popularity of that publicity favor nearly 300 years ago. Actually, The fruit was called an orange BEFORE the color. In fact, the color was named after the fruit.

It's weird that orange wasn't usually considered a color but a shade or red until relatively recently. A lot of languages don't actually have a word for orange.
