gaming Game design topic

Recommended Posts

Created a topic dedicated to development, engines and enthusiasts from both gamers and developers when it comes to game design.

Things like:

  • Discussing about engines
  • sharing tips and tricks
  • asking gamers what they like
  • Asking developers about their experience and work
  • helping each other with developing a game
  • how to market your game
  • etc...

Let's start the discussion with; Which engine do you prefer?

The closest I personally come to game making is kind of a side hobby deal.  :P So I guess I look more at IDEs instead of engines, like Game Maker (or Twine).

As far as I know they're easy to use.

By the way, is it also possible to use flashanimations in engines like Unreal 4 and Unity? Just to be sure about it.

I've used Unity quite a bit, and it seems to work quite smoothly, with some decent graphics.

Sounds good. Are you planning to work further with it?

I heard that most of the small developers use Unity, but Unreal 4 seems to have also much potential. What makes Unreal 4 even more interesting is the blueprint system. It's some kind of visual coding. Here's an example:

Is it possible to make a 2D adventure RPG like A Link to the Past with Unreal 4?

Edit: I asked it on the Unreals Forums and it's possible to use 2D animations with Unreal 4. But Flash animations only work when the file changed.

  • 2 months later...

Currently doing a bachelors in game development. Unreal 4 is definitely my favourite engine out there at the moment. The power behind it, the amount of resources available...its just too easy to love. That being said, I usually recommend Unity for those looking to get into game development.

And luckily more developers are using it.

Are you planning to Create a game?

I plan to minor in video game design besides my major in psychology.

I'm specifically looking at mobile games, and the main reason is because of the sheer amount of pay-to-win freemium rip-off clones that has been thrown into the appstores these days, don't know if it's a major problem in the Western market, but I know for sure it is over here on the Eastern side.

I want to create a game that is simple and easy to pick up, yet could offer the kind of edge that console games offer too (story, music, visual, etc). Of course, the main theme I want to address is "message." Quite a few of the well-known console games these days have a very deep message within them, but for mobile? Clash of Clans is a great game, but it most likely does not contain the kind of message that gives players some deep thoughts. That "message" aspect of the game is what could potentially make video games more than what is was back when they first came out, not some digital stuff cooked up for players to grind their way through, but a game with something that could provoke some serious thoughts, a form of art. I, at least right now, hope to bring that aspect to the mobile side.

Maybe earn less than 0.1% of how much Supercell earns, I don't really mind as long as it's profitable enough for me and my possible future dev team to have more than enough to go around.

I know it sounds pretty ambitious, perhaps delusional, and maybe some of the game publishers out there are probably laughing their butts off reading this (one a side note: I heard stories that some publishers denied certain games due to them not being pay-to-win). But hey, a man could dream and at least give it a shot right?

Anyways, that's my little rant/speech whatever you call it. As for what specific genre, I'm looking at a mobile third person shooter, maybe would add multiplayer but that sounds very complicated. But whatever the case, should start on the basics first. I am looking at something that doesn't require too much programming, at least until I find some friends who can. I seem to notice that unreal 4 and unity are the most popular choices. In that case, which would be a good place to start?

I'm a games developer myself and in fact want to become a games programmer in the future for some game company XD. Always had a interest in games and I love making them... when my programming works at least...

Currently I'm using unity and a fan of it with how simple it is to use once you get the hang of it. Though I do hear a lot about the unreal engine being much better and I would try it out but i got to download it... and it will take ages for me. Maybe one day.

I am currently creating a remake of the jellyfish fields level from Battle from Bikini Bottom on the ps2 in unity just to train my programming skills and to have a little fun with it. Going rather well apart from a couple of issues i have to fix... somehow XD.

EDIT: If anyone wants to play my game in it's current state then just message me and I'll send you a download link to it.

I had an old project where I was making a RPG in RPG Maker XP but that has been suspended indefinitely.

I have recently been experimenting around in Unity.  I want to make a multiplayer strategy game, but I am becoming frustrated because I cannot find a good tutorial on how to go about doing this.  All the multiplayer tutorials are focused around built in 2d and 3d character controllers, and I can't so much as figure how to pass some text data between clients using the information from these tutorials, despite being able to replicate Quill's results in his multiplayer FPS tutorial.  If anyone has some real good multiplayer or networking experience with Unity, I would greatly appreciate it if they PMed me on this topic.
