I am sure this has been discussed to death.. but if we look at when she was banished and when she returned, it was as if time literally  STOPPED for her for the past 1000 years - like she was simply paused and when she returned she went right back to doing exactly what she did the moment she was banished.

Celestia seemed to sense the one thing she would try to do is eliminate her and so she appeared to hide. Does this mean that nightmare moon assumes celestia is gone and seeks to rule in her stead? Or without the elements of harmony was luna able to detain her and then go after what was rightfully hers? The story doesn't really fully explain this..

what are your thoughts?

If the writers wanted to make some of the lore dark, perhaps it was implied that Luna, who was Nightmare Moon, simply waited and planned for those hundreds of years. Luna was Nightmare moon when she was banished, and she was the same when she returned. While banished on the moon, her anger and resentment toward her sister probably kept her in that form. Her anger likely grew worse and worse as years passed.

However, her plans were exactly the same, like you mentioned. All I can think of now is either her waiting for 1000 years, or being trapped in stasis from magic.

I believe Luna was far gone before Celestia banished her to the moon. Nightmare Moon was a dark entity that consumed her from the sadness and bitterness that Luna herself contained. Luna wanted to be admired like her sister, but Nightmare Moon used that desire as an excuse to basically spread eternal night and take over the kingdom.

When she was banished, I believe Luna was trapped in the darkness and lost track of time. The dark force blinded her from time going on...when Luna "officially " returned, it was when Nightmare Moon was defeated. Time then caught up with her appearance I suppose. But not her knowledge on how things worked in Equestria

makes sense.

so is what took over luna similar to the tantalus?

I believe so yes. That is only my theory though. The Tantabus was something else though...something Luna created herself where it's purpose was to give her nightmares.

Luna is a prime example for both dark lessons: holding in bitterness and sadness can lead to attracting something far darker than you intended. And holding in your depression can cause you to inflict your own pain.

I can't even imagine what Luna could have been doing on the moon for a thousand years.  Probably not much of anything considering that she was alone and the lunar surface is totally barren.  I have to wonder how she retained her sanity during her long banishment.

When I first got into MLP, this single question nagged me for a long time.  I couldn't understand why Luna could beg for her sister's forgiveness and admit that she had missed Celestia.  I couldn't fathom why she didn't attack her with the fury of a millennia's worth of anger and bitterness.

I know MLP is, at heart, a kid's show that wouldn't deal with such a dark concept like vengeance or resentment, but it still bothers me to think about what Luna must have went through.

one COULD argue that she created BOTH of them.

Or at least manifested the open path for them to come to her.

I think it's because Celestia never trapped "Luna".....she trapped Nightmare Moon. Luna was trapped the moment the dark entity of her own bitterness, sadness and resentment took over and used her inner desire to be admired as an excuse to take over the kingdom and spread an evil reign over Equestria. It wasn't Luna wanting "revenge"....it was Nightmare Moon wanting to be an evil c*nt. Luna never truly wanted what Nightmare Moon was trying to accomplish.

Nightmare Moon was freed when she appeared at the end of the first episode. But Luna was freed when Nightmare Moon was defeated. Which was why she wanted forgiveness and missed her sister.

She made friends, being stuck on the moon however, the only thing she had to make them from was rocks, and as rocks have a natural tendancy to be rather quiet and boring, she ehchanted them to give them sentience. Not an easy thing to achieve, but fortunately she had 1000 years to master it.

When she returned to Equestria, she was unable to carry her rock friends with her, so she just took one small rock along, the idea was to use it as a base template from which she could build an army of super strong rock ponies to act as her royal guard. But when she became Luna again, she had no need of an army, so she released the rock - that she had named Boulder - into his natural habitat, ie a rock farm

As boulder still carries the enchantment, he remains able to communicate telepathically. Unfortunately though, most ponies are never quiet enough, and don't spend enough time staring at rocks, to hear him

Most ponies..

Best I could come up with off the top of my head

And that would be a good argument. I won't deny the possibility. But it all DEPENDS on this small detail that could either support this theory or knock it out the park: if the IDW comics are canon with the FiM series.

Because in one Comic, Rarity becomes a "Nightmare Moon" and is consumed by the dark entity. Once you read it, you'd get why I believe Luna didn't actually "create" it....but more so attracted it

are you sure it's boulder and not skippy?

but that also can be challenged, because if one pony can create a shadow being, doesn't that make sense that another pony could as well using the same types of criteria?

and what if the shadow wasn't ACTUALLY destroyed when nightmare moon was hit with the elements of harmony, but was simply dislodged and escaped, biding its time? After all, can you truly ever fully destroy the darkness within?

Ohhh so many options :P

Sitting around and doing nothing.

Or singing this song.

pardon my ignorance, but how do you embed a youtube video? Do you just paste in the link and it auto does that? I have been making them all links with the link button..

8EDIT* ah yes, it is just the link only.

All I can say is read the comic. Because the entity wasn't destroyed....it was dislodged as you said. In the comic, it supports exactly what I said: Luna didn't create Nightmare Moon, she "attracted" the dark force and it used her sad bitter thoughts to consume her. In the comics, that dark force returns and uses Rarity's insecurities to take over her. Once you read it, you'd see what I am talking about. There was no "darkness" within....it was darkness trying to find a host. So that wouldn't be much of a challenge. The only challenge there would be is if the IDW comics are canon. that pretty much makes it a "make or break" to this whole theory

I think Skippy had to stay behind. They have a bad word policy in Equestria, and Skippy got 1 million years moon time

Also, I only noticed my typo after you quoted me - "He is remains", the derp has derped >.<

the question becomes.. WHO created it?

or what..

*wink wink* You'd have to read the comics. I don't want to give you any more spoilers. Though the argument still exists whether or not IDW comics are canon.
