so it would appear that aside from raising and lowering the moon, lunas powers also include watching over dreams while keeping nightmares at bay and helping ponies through their problems in their dreams, kind of like the ponies subconscious..

 

that and being feared on nightmare night for 1000 years.. probably causing nightmares..

 

so if luna was on the moon for the past thousand years, what became of these dreams?

 

did ponies become consumed by their dreams, where any dream had the power to corrupt the pony or cause them suffering?

 

Or did they simply not dream?

I believe they were still able to dream....I don't think Luna's powers goes as far as giving a pony the ability to dream. She merely watches over them. A pony will continue to dream regardless if she exist or not because dreams and nightmares are created by one's subconscious which will forever exist and grow. I do think they had nightmares......but I wouldn't call it being consumed by their dreams. Dreams and nightmares won't consume you unless you allow them to or take them to heart. Otherwise, you move on and just brush it off as a "bad dream" and move on with your life or simply learn from it. I believe the only reason Luna appeared in the CMC dreams was because they were too young to understand their nightmares and the cause of it. After all, she cares for them simply because they are so closely related to the mane 6 who were the main ponies that saved her in the first place. 

 

There is ALWAYS a possibility for dreams and nightmares to consume a pony, but it isn't AN INEVITABLE OUTCOME in Luna's absence. Ponies are capable of interpreting and overcoming their own nightmares.

Yep, pretty much.  During her absence, I'm sure there were lots of kids plagued with fears of the Boogie Man hiding under their beds.  But there was no Princess of the Night to banish their fears so they'd have to just crawl in bed with their parents or something; like normal kids do.

if the site is any indication, most of the ponies no longer HAVE parents..

 

am I the only one who has notices this? Grannie apple and that other old pony are like the only elder ponies in the series, and half of the ponies parents are just.. gone..
