spoiler Is Starlight MLP's Anakin Skywalker?

This is not intended to make anyone upset. But I didn't think Starlight's motives were justified nor interesting for wanting to change time. She put her entire species on the line over a childhood temper tantrum. I don't understand what people like about her. A villain is supposed to be hated yes. But I love to hate these villains and we want to see the heroines succeed. Starlight Glimmer to me is like Anakin from Star Wars. It's now officially canon that she is now the most powerful pony in Equestria as confirmed by Twilight. Why would Twilight say that? Especially comparing her to Celestia and Luna? And now Twilight is no longer special. Twilight was never overpowered. She had to train and slowly develop her own personal magic(minus EOH and Rainbow Power). So logically.. Glimmer became powerful prior to being reformed because of her anger and hatred for her own species. It's awful that being a better character no longer makes the character special.

Starlight should have remained evil. I don't buy her being reformed, after all this is a girls's show and they need to make it contrived because they think kids are stupid. If I were Celestia, I would have thrown this psychopathic mare in the dungeon or fed her to some changelings.

I disagree strongly.

  1. Compare what happened to Starlight to Moondancer.

Moondancer, a really huge introvert, decided to come out of her shell and plan a party for a character who shares the same passions as her. But when asked to come, TS blew it off. In response, MD became extremely humiliated, and her introversion worsened. When Twilight blew off her party and then left for Ponyville, MD became a very huge recluse.

Starlight Glimmer had only one friend in her home. Sunburst and Glimmer were obviously very close, when Sunburst prevented injury. But rather than be one of the proudest moments of her life, it turned into something very negative. Everyone treated Sunburst as the most special thing in her village, and he was relocated to Canterlot. That was the last time she ever saw him, and she was stuck in her village as an unknown.
  2. In someway, friendship hurt them so deeply, they couldn't escape the past.

Moondancer felt so embarrassed by Twilight no-showing, she drove herself to study to escape from the pain. As Twilight's royalty status was established and evolved, MD went nowhere.

Meanwhile, Starlight Glimmer was so hurt by losing communication of her only friend, she didn't want to feel like that again. That's why she came up with the equality spell and felt comfortable leading a group of equal ponies. By having everyone of equal talent, Glimmer doesn't have to see anyone usurping her or each other.
  3. On the surface, these reasons look petty. But observe them more deeply, and everything starts to make sense.

Moondancer's chance to exit the closet had no payoff, so she reentered and didn't care if she ever left. See how she acts around Twilight, Twinkleshine, Minuette, Spike, and Lemon Drops. Initially, her response to friendship was apathy. But as they talked with and about her more, she grew more annoyed and hurt by even the thought of it.

When Starlight's friendship broke up, she was a kid, and the moment he got his mark is the final time they saw each other. No goodbyes, no thank-yous, no nothing. They just drifted away. When you have moments like that as a kid, this hurt festers into anger. To her, talent and cutie marks = the breakup of long, established relationships. Witnessing it from other ponies triggers the trauma.

Kind of, the source of both Anakin Skywalker and Starlight Glimmers decent into darkness does stem from a fear of loss but the reasons for this and how they reacted to this are different. Anakin saw a vision that his wife would die in childbirth which ironically came true due to his own decent to the dark side a decent which was we saw some signs of in Episode II but was edged along by Palpatine aka Darth Sideous. Anakin simply wanted to go to the dark side to achieve the power over death which Sideous promised him and considering how powerful Sideous was may have been able to deliver (but probably wouldn't have so he could continue to control Anakin).

Starlight Glimmer on the other hand wanted to create a utopian society by establishing a cult due to the pain of her loss of a friend and her fear that she would not be able to hold onto any other friends in the future. Anakin didn't have a grand utopian vision, he was merely someone who let his own emotions overcome his reason and was driven over the edge by tragedy while Starlight Glimmer became delusional that she could shield herself from any loss by making things more "equal". In other words Starlight Glimmers motives had an arguably more political tinge to them even though Anakin as Darth Vader wielded considerably more political power than Starlight Glimmer.

If anything Starlight Glimmer is much more like this guy.

For those who are unfamiliar the picture is of Amon who was the main villain of the first season of Avatar The Legend of Korra. He was the leader of a terrorist group called the Equalists whose goal was to wipe out all bending, he played on the fears and prejudices of non benders to justify this eradication to make things more "equal". It was revealed at the end of the season that his method of removing bending from benders was actually a form of bloodbending which is a subsect of waterbending making him guilty of a rather profound hypocrisy. However like Starlight Glimmer he did actually believe that what he was doing was the right thing even though his actions were extreme.

Anakins goals were never political in nature even though his actions (putting down rebels) did have a certain political tinge to them. Starlight Glimmer like Amon is a very good example of a political idealogy gone horribly horribly wrong, it is true that her motivations in the season finale were much more personal but with how passionate people get about these matters it is impossible to separate the political and the personal entirely.

From Cutie Map it's been applied that Starlight Glimmer worked really hard as well to gain those spells.

Starlight Glimmer was actually surprised at Twilight's shield spell as well. "I've studied that spell for years..." as Starlight said. In a way they were pretty equal. They're both gifted AND worked hard to get to where they are.
