Do you think there should have been an alternate future timeline to tease a potential future villain?

 

It would have given fans something to talk about.

Maybe that's what the wasteland foretold.  Anyways while maybe not having an alternative timeline, I would have liked it if they ended on a stinger reveling that season 6's villains were planning on this to happen, benefitted from it, have been setting up all the previous villains before and that everything is going according to plan.

This would have been a very interesting touch. Like maybe having a mysterious figure standing in the background of the wasteland future. Or perhaps having that same figure standing in the background in all of the futures, also not being affected by those changes like Starlight and Twilight. What this villain could have been, I am not sure, but it would have been a nicely mysterious addition.

Seventh timeline, nothing but destruction.

That could present some great story telling potential, during the 2nd and 3rd Equestria Girls movies we clearly saw strong continuity by clearly seeing the consequences of Sunset Shimmer releasing magic into the human world, consequences which will take a long time to fully deal with and something like could very easily be the result of the consequences of Starlight Glimmers actions in the season finale. We saw in the comics the consequences of Celestia visiting this alternate Equestria and having a romantic relationship with this good version of King Sombra from said alternate Equestria and it is possible that not everything got completely cleaned up after Starlight Glimmer came to her senses.

 

Some opportunistic villain could have followed both her and Twilight into the regular Equestria and is simply biding their time, we clearly saw Nightmare Moon try to take advantage of the time magic herself (albeit unsuccessfully). Or another possibility could be that distortions in the time/space continuum from Stalight Glimmer trying to change the past could be slowly leaking into Equestria causing certain characters and events from said alternate timelines leaking into Equestria. In this case there wouldn't need to be a villain pulling  the strings per se, but there would of course be opportunistic villains that would take advantage of this. Imagine if Discord, King Sombra, Nightmare Moon, Queen Chrysalis and Tirek were all running loose throughout the default Equestria? It would make for quite the epic two parter.

A wasteland that represents all the villains fought each other to the bitter end and this mysterious one survived.

Maybe the wastelan vilian is simply nuclear war?  Sombra? Nuke 'em. Discord? Nuke 'em. Tirek? Nuke 'em. Chrysalis? Nuke 'em. All of them at once? NUKE THEM!
