gaming Gaming series with different gameplay mechanics

So here's something I'd like to ask you all. Are you fond of one franchise or another but wish you could experience it in another way? What's one gaming series or title where, you like the world, characters, etc. but aren't as fond as the gameplay mechanics? If you could change them to be another kind of existing gameplay option, what would you make them?

Note though, this isn't something you need to make on the likelihood that it will ever happen. Just something that, if you had your way, you'd play the game this way.

For example . . . . well melee combat. Yeah I was going to give a specific example but a lot of the times when I'm playing a shooter, I wish I was playing a hack n' slash/beat 'em up. I would like to use this approach in a lot of settings, Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Destiny, Deus Ex. I even have different scenarios and character archetypes that could justify such fighters in each setting. Yeah some of them do have options for melee combat, but they are always very paltry and not well implemented. Such as having a very basic strike be the only attack at close range and still relying a great deal on the targeting reticle.

That's just me though, what are some examples of alternate gameplay models you guys would like to see for the series you like?

2D Fighting games in Sid Meier's Civilization?

Turn based strategy in Metal Gear?

Racing in Mari- oh wait . . .

While it's not vastly different from what's currently in place, one of the MAJOR changes I want to see in Skyrim is gameplay that is on par with Dark Souls. Dark Souls has a much more satisfying combat system in place that makes each kill feel rewarding and every fight intense and interesting IMO. Bethesda's combat system in its Elder Scroll's series feels generally meh, and I have been unable to play any games from the series purely because of the gameplay mechanics themselves.

Same applies to Fallout. I wish it had a smoother combat mechanic closer to an FPS like Halo or Battlefield.

Titanfall could be quite interesting as an RTS methinks. I mean they pulled it off with Halo and Titanfall has units and such would work well in such an RTS.

It would be great if the official Pokemon games had a manual battle system.

Japan, where Yo-Kai Watch's second movie has more success than The Force Awakens :umad:

2D Fighting games in Sid Meier's Civilization?

... a 2D fighting game ... in Civilisation... what abomination is this?

Jokes aside, I think that some games could incorporate new mechanics, whereas others maybe not. The one that springs to my mind is Half Life 2 - a cracking first-person-shooter where a little squad-based tactics could go a long way. One section of the game is simply titled 'Follow Freeman!' and that's exactly what happens - you merrily blast your way through the bad guys, some good guys occasionally join you and are usually blasted themselves in short order. There are medics that give you health, but that's the extent of it (oh, and a wait command I suppose.) Some better squad control, such as that found in Star Wars Republic Commando (a decent FPS with simple but effective squad control) would really have improved some sections, and the setting would have made for a good squad-based FPS game in its own right.

I think that most FPS games could work as an X-COM style turn-based combat and resource management game instead, which brings up the interesting notion of seeing how far it would work in the other direction (The Bureau: X-COM Declassified didn't go too well, mind.) Hybrids are usually of interest to me - recently I've been playing Thea: The Awakening, which mixes Civ-styled hex-based village and warband management and strategy with some light RPG elements and a sort-of deck-building card-based combat system, and I've found it rather good.

Participating in this RP can be agonizing sometimes.

I just hate it when games are so easily broken. With regards to Pokémon, for example, Smogon players have completely ruined the idea of online play for me, because everyone has the same, optimized team, and everyone knows just what to do and how to do it. Where's the fun in that?

Okay, so it's a bit of an old example here, but I'd have loved to have seen an RPG styled Spyro the Dragon game. The original insomniac trilogy, particularly the first game, had a number of different 'hub worlds' that were each diverse in their design and I think would've made a fantastic setting for a more open-world experience. Every world had it's own theme about it which I believe could have been used to introduce a new game play mechanic unique to that world for use throughout the levels there. For example: The Dream Weavers world could've have introduced a special feature wherein Spyro enters a 'dream state' and essentially warps to a parallel version of the world where literally anything can happen, sensical or not, and use this to overcome or bypass obstacles that would normally be impossible in the physical world. I just think something like that would be making full use of the idea that Dream Weavers is a land where fantastical dreams are an integral part of how life works there.

Obviously, being an RPG it should also include basic RPG mechanics such as a leveling system. Spyro is but a young dragon when he first starts out, it only makes sense that as he travels across the Dragon lands he should be gaining a flurry of knowledge and experience from his escapades across what was previously unknown to him. I think with every new 'world' he visits, he would unlock new sets of powers that reflect the environment of the world he is in. (e.g. Magic Crafters give him more magical abilities, Beast Makers give him the ability to tame beasts and have them attack enemies, etc.). I'd also like a feature that as you progress through the game Spyro's appearance begins to change to reflect his growing experience. He starts out a young, unassuming little dragon that by games end has grown into something like the Spyro from Dawn of the Dragon, showcasing his own adventure to maturity. Maybe even have him gain subtler aesthetic changes from the worlds he visits if you complete them to full? Completing Beast Makers could give him tribal markings. :P

Turn based strategy in Metal Gear?

Oddly enough, that actually happened. There were two games, Metal Gear Acid and a sequel to that, they were card-based, turn-based stealth games. Rather....interesting. I would like to play more of the first one. If you have a PSP, I suggest checking those out. ;)

As for the question, hmm....

I would love for the Dynasty Warriors series to have a much larger strategy focus in one game. Like, have a game where you do the hacking and slashing battles, but in between, you develop towns, cities, and you build your empire up specifically, and perhaps different places could be attacked and defended. This could also lead to a deep RTS mechanic as well, where you don't have to do any of the battles yourself if you wish not to. It depends on if they would balance the difficulty right. This would essentially make a Dynasty Warriors game with so much more depth and I would love to see that.
