Should I really call myself a "brony"?

It just depends on if you want to call yourself that or not. You are an MLP fan, and you are participating within the fandom so obviously you are qualified to take the title of brony if you wish, but that is up to you.

Being a fan of any show shouldn't make you anything different. A lot of people like South Park(i do too), but we don't call ourselves anything other than fans. Being a fan of something doesn't have to change your life, so yes you can just be called an MLP fan(even if you're the biggest fan).

It is not mandatory. I've watched alot of stuff but I'd not call myself a whoovian or a trekkie because I watch them. I have referred to myself as a brony in the past but usually only with people I knew for a fact wouldn't understand why I like the show XD.

It seems to me that this sort of thing has more to do with avoiding negative stereotypes.  Just like video fans not wanting to be labeled as "gamers" or anime fans not wanting to be labeled as "otaku," etc.  Those terms, along with "brony" and many others can come with a host of negative stereotypes, and you can choose how you want to handle it.  For me, I own the title so that it helps break down stereotypes rather than reinforce them.  To separate myself from it would be to agree that the stereotypes are true, and then somehow need to distance myself from them.

For me it's easier just to have a conversation about MLP and being a brony head on, or to not discuss it at all if it's not the right place for it, rather than to seek some middle ground.  But hey, to each their own.

It's entirely up to you, but it's true that calling yourself a Brony can cause some people to judge you based on poorly supported and at times entertaining stereotypes.

That being said, if you are pretty certain about yourself as a person, and you decided that these stereotypes do not fit you well and serve mainly as amusement, go ahead and take on the name of Brony.

In my opinion, it really doesn't matter what one in the fandom calls their self. I agree with you, I generally don't like to call myself a brony/pegasister because I don't feel comfortable expressing my liking of MLP in that sort of way.

This user has left the fandom. They've been exposed to the horrible underbelly of it and the poisonous culture, including the racism, rampant pedophilia, and lack of care to do ANYTHING about it.

This fandom began on 4Chan. It shows.

I hope you can get out too.

I dont call myself a brony because I dont like what its associated with, but i'm also one of the biggest MLP fans on the site so it's safe to say you dont have to call yourself a brony. <3

I am just curious, what are bronies associated with?

The basement-dwelling, Mountain Dew-drinking, Cheetos-eating, atheist, misogynist, creepy, obese neckbeard loser seems to be a typical stereotype.

(I'm not saying those are all bad things, that's just the stereotype.)

Oh.... ok.... I just think the art is cute. some of the fan art is spectacular. BUT! I find some of the more um... lewd creations are strange to me. not saying it's wrong, but just not my cup of coffee. thanks for the clarification
