Why do you call yourself a brony?

As for the analogy... I would say it would be fair to say that if the word Christian itself was being used as a way to address some discrepancy the way that the word brony addresses gender.

 

Someone calling themselves a Christian simply suggests that they are a follower of Christ and nothing more. Someone calling themselves a Brony on the other hand not only suggests they're a follower of the show, but suggests that they are a male follower of the show [and also carries the connotation that they're older than its "intended age group"] as well in an attempt to address that gender/age barrier that so many people who aren't fans of MLP associate with it.

 

If the label was just "MLPFan" or some variation instead of Brony I would say that it would be a fair comparison because labeling someone an MLPFan only implies that they're a fan of the show

 

I guess a new term would be of value then, as yeah, it does carry a gender distinction, which seems unnecessary. I've heard it said that "Brony" can apply to both genders, but try calling a guy a "Pegasister" and the double standard reveals itself.

 

I shall mull over a new term that captures the level of fanaticism I feel applies while avoiding the unnecessary distinctions of age and gender.

I personally call myself a Pegasister (and stand by the fact that I indeed invented the term and that the internet STOLE IT FROM ME. *koff*) But that aside, I call myself a pegasister because the term "Brony" to me has always identified the male adult fans of the show, and I am not male. That, and I myself have been a fan of MLP since before it was cool to love ponies. You know. In the 80s and early 90s. Before we had a title to call ourselves XD I'm totally down with being a girl and having my own pony-lover title though. I think its *awesome*.

I think it's a clever name, and it makes me feel like I'm part of a counter-culture. I know that you can enjoy cartoons whenever you want (I was always a fan of the Powerpuff girls anyway) but it kind of makes it more fun to feel like you're doing something you aren't "supposed" to do.

 

Is it going too far to bring in the comparison "Why do Christians call themselves that? Aren't they essentially just big fans of the story of Jesus Christ?" Think about it. Gather once a week to get a new lesson to mull over. Discuss it with other like-minded people. Write songs and stories celebrating that central story. The many Brony meet-ups could be compared to church services in a sense.

 

Just an observation I've been thinking about since shortly after joining the herd.

 

I have wondered a little bit about this myself. There is a sense in which MLP could become a substitute for the gospel, considering that the lessons have some similarities to what Jesus preached. Love, mercy, and self sacrifice for the sake of others are recurring themes in the show. These are all things that humans have a common need for, hence the fact that it has such a drawing power for people. Us Christians believe that these ideals can only be realized through trusting Jesus, as opposed to trying to obtain it through our own means which inevitably fail. So in that case, the analogy breaks down because a Brony is an observer of something that they like, whereas a Christian has a relationship with someone to whom they are entrusting their salvation.

 

I don't want to get too far off topic though, and this subject could easily become a discussion of it's own.

 

From an entymological standpoint, a Christian is defined as a follower of Christ. There may be some who are followers of the Ponies, emulating the lessons that they learn from the show. But I don't think that fits the term Brony as well, who are more passive.
