web Is the MLPForum and echo chamber?

So, do you ever feel like this website has this particular issue. A lot of other website's users claim they have this problem (Reddit, 4Chan ect.).

Basically, do you think that the users of this website have a tendency to shun or ridicule certain ideologies, while enforcing others (similar to a hive mind)?

Edit: R.I.P title :(

In order for the members of MLP Forums to behave essentially like a "hive mind," they would first have to agree on something.  I've yet to see this happen in any significant capacity.  The moment one so-called ideology is exulted or denounced by one member, another member will quote them and say precisely the opposite.  This is the way of MLP Forums: Constant, pervasive contention.  Even "best pony" is a point of potentially endless discussion.

I would say you get that on any site. However there is certain topics that a lot of people agree upon, and certain topics that a lot of people disagree on.

However in recent years I'd say MLP Forums has become less of an echo chamber than it used to be. In contrast to Ziggy's post, sometimes the endless discussion is a good thing because it creates a more fun topic to discuss than "I like thing", "I also like thing."

Basically what the two above me said. I've seen way too many varying opinions on that site and people agreeing with those varying opinions for the site to be considered an echo chamber. Yes, even popular opinions of episodes, characters, political views, etc can be countered by a vocal minority who are a big contrarian to that.

That is everywhere honestly, other than the Debate Pit section the "I am right, and you are wrong" subject is not normally seen here.

We do get a lot of good debaters though fortunately!

@@Dark Rider,

@,

You're both wrong, this place is neither an echo chamber where we all agree, nor is it where there is zero consensus or agreement on anything.

It's a forum. People agree, people disagree. The same people agree on some things and disagree on others.

I would have to disagree, ive been here since 2011, and there's always been a very wide range of people with different beliefs and ideologies, heck the fact that there even is a debate pit shows that there is no "hive mind"

People can disagree and the forum still be considered an echo chamber, if the premise of both arguments upholds to two large portions of the community.

Example: I don't like the current direction of world building the MLP writing staff is going for. This argument has a following on both ends, easily.

Also, any single person can give an unpopular opinion on this website and have people agree with them. It will just, statistically be less than the popular opinion.

Example: Slice of Life may have been poorly written, but was the best episode in the series.

I don't think it's to the same extreme as websites like Reddit and 4chan, but to say it doesn't exist at all is a bit far-fetched.

If that's your definition of an echo chamber, than fine, but I just call that civil discourse. What would you prefer? Harassment and hate mail?

I dunno, I have seen many a varying opinions on this site in the past 3 and a half years. It has lead to some pretty interesting discussions for sure and some that I would rather avoid. Heated topics are sometimes REALLY heated. Human nature is what that is. : D Get any group of people together and many different opinions begin to arise and show themselves.
