Is it possible the movie could end up being darker than the show?

The series has already played the "threat to the entire world" card on multiple occasions. How, exactly, is the film supposed to further raise the stakes without actually killing characters off?

Actually could see that happening; Celestia and luna passing on and leaving leadership to twilight for example I could see happening.

Can i also ask a question?

When you say "I want this movie to be dark" what do you want from that movie?

I think that's a bit narrow minded there   there are lots of series that are darker than that work out well. For example, beast wars was darker than the original transformers and it worked out well. The GI joe comics were DRASTICALLY darker than the TV show and they worked out well. Transformers comics and War for cybertron were darker and they worked out well. Batman is a roller coaster of lighter/darker, with may darker ones, like the Arkham series or the dark knight trilogy, being seen as very good. And I know you've already mentioned megaman, but Megaman Zero was DRASTICALLY darker than the others, and was very good for it, yeah?

Eh most of these aren't really good examples

- GI Joe and Transformers can get away with being darker because they already heavily deal with darker themes like war and such

- It can be debated that Batman has always been meant to be dark, even with the 40's and 60's cheese in mind

- Zero is the darkest series in the Megaman franchise, but it was coming off the heels of the already dark X series, as opposed to the jump between Classic and X

I'm not saying MLP can't do dark moments, because it has, and it's done some of them(keyword some) well, but I there's a difference between having dark moments and just being darker. And to me, making MLP darker would be like making Super Mario darker, the series is just too happy for it to work, at least that's how I see it

Many movies based on TV shows tend to take a darker turn on the big screen. However, I doubt this movie will be the same. It's still targeted towards little girls, and they'll probably keep it that way. Now, of course, they'll want to make sure the parents of those little girls aren't bored out of their minds while watching it. So I suspect more mature themes, but no deaths of any kind.

So I say it'll be rated PG most likely.

Well, Mario RPG was a bit darker than the normal mario fair was, yeah?

Additionally, super smash bros brawl had a significantly darker plot than alot of characters like Mario normally had with the subspace army.

I gotta wonder when we'll get more information on this movie :/

Like I think its over a year and a half away (I heard fall 2017 was when it was expected), but still XD

The show can pull off moments of intensity and action when they try, and I would love to see the movie get a little dark and take some risks, given who they know is going to go see it and what they like to see. I would be a little let down if it was something typical and cheesy.

The movie will be on the big screen and not on the safe haven that is discovery family. Plus the movie will probably try to appeal to as wide an audience as possible and we tend to expect/forgive darker themes in movies.

I decided to leave this thread as it's a comparison between the show and speculation for the upcoming movie, but in retrospect it probably does belong in Sugarcube Corner since it is more about the film, so I have relocated it accordingly.

Maybe... More Dramatic, more mature tone, high stakes... something like that.

That is kind of half answer. I really want something like a true description, of what you want. I know, i ask a bit much.

Maybe...

Terrific Villain with dark backstory (Cutie Remark should have done that).

Heroes will sometime doubt their own philosophy. (Grey moral)

Realistic conflicts that is not solved too easily (They have an hour length movie, not 22-minuted episode, they shouldnt rush...)

And finally... Any implication of death or Downright On-screen Deaths (im just asking too much, but they've done it with Sombra and Cyclop in Griffinstone episode so it not impossible... )

I honestly don't see most of that happen.

MLP was always a very black and white show, where good and evil was always there and i think making grey morals is a bit too hard for little girls to understand.

The conflict can indeed be more realistic. If they have 90 minutes of movie, which is standard for animated movies, then they can really pull of something here.

I think there will be no death. Death is a very hard and sensible topic to pull off and that i mostly trust with disney and pixar. Sombra dosen't really count for me, because he was just mostly a shadow and i don't know how much you call that life.

I don't want to be a party pooper or anything, i just think that some ideas will throw MLPs identity out of the window.

Oh, it very well could LOT darker than the show. Animated movies get way more leeway on what they can put compared to cartoons.

Don't underestimate what they can do in theaters. This movie is going to likely have the same target audience as most Disney and Pixar films rather than young kids like the cartoon. They really want to pull in a whole new audience in time for G5.

What kinda audience do you want to get with Ponies? I mean, it's true that it's cool to like these ponies now, but who, besides the small faction of bronies and the little kids demographic, how do you want to get outsiders into the cinema? If you make it cool and edgy for the outsiders, you scare away your actual demographics, which are still little kids.

And besides, how do you know G5 is just around the corner? For all we know, G5 can be 10 years away from this movie and it probably has a whole new writing team.

Making it the level of something like HTTYD or even Big Hero 6 will generate a wide audience.

No. Like i said, they are still ponies. The only fans that you will gather, are the main demographic and the bronies, which are minority.

You can turn and twist it how you want, but this won't be a big box office success and will be just something that the bronies will talk about.

There are still a ton of people out there who are pretty ambivalent or unnoticed about the show. Advertising it as something that can be enjoyed by all ages will reel them in. I really don't want an Equestria Girls type film.

Who said that we are getting an EQG type of movie. We will get an MLP movie.

Also, how are you willing to advertise this movie, without changing the Friendship is magic identity and also making it enjoyable for guys, who never watched a single episode, have no idea who these ponies are and what they stand for and tell them it's entertaining?

  • 1 month later...

I'm not all that fussed about the movie to be honest, but as for a darker theme, I don't really see them making

anything much worse than what's already happened in some of the other premieres/finales or episodes.. :twi:

I mean, Season 4's Finale was based around an Evil Centaur who basically sucked out the

souls of everyone in Equestria, and banished Celestia, Luna and Cadence to hell itself..

Season 5 Episode 13's plot  was based upon an evil spirit infecting and corrupting the

dreams of all beings and strives to engulf the entire world in a living nightmare..

There have been some dark ones, but i doubt the last movie will be darker than what the show has already

shown.. And personally, i don't want the movie to be darker or grim.. It just wouldn't suit.. I mean it can be

dark.. but being even darker than the show is a bit much.. Bronies aren't the only ones to watch MLP..
