web Multi-page articles on the web

Omg. This is just a vent. But I hate web articles that are lists! Unless I'm looking specifically for a list of something. But they're everywhere now. And so annoying to get 12 pages into an article and then can't back out to my search again without clicking back 12 times. Arrrgghh! Am i missing something? Why are these list articles everywhere and when will they go away!? Rant over.

I think they are everywhere because it could get them more money. It's the same reason some pages are full of ads. I have adblock for that reason. Ads aren't a problem unless they're intrusive. Audio ads on video sites or ads that pop up all the time are annoying, but the ones in the side bar without any sound are fine. As for the multiple pages, sometimes, they let you view as one page. There are sites, like listverse for example, has lists in one page. Unfortunately, many sites that have lists don't put them on one page. If you have Windows, you could right click on the back button and see a list of your recent pages and go back quicker than clicking back a dozen times.

Its all about the money. Reader convenience is thrown out the window in favor of it. I have seen many lists on gaming websites that loooooooooove to have like 15 pages just for a list, and of course, each page is loaded with ads. Those particular websites, they are the ones that get the ad block from me.

Yeah, I can relate with you :squee:.

I have also been noticing that as the number of websites grew in the last few years, the average quality of them just dropped. Older pages, even though they were less technologically advanced, used to be more informative. Today the information presented is much more generic, if not just a copy and paste from Wikipedia. Wikipedia by its turn is not exhaustive in any subject and also does not cover all the subjects, because of their overly strict "notability" and "sourcing" criteria, that hinders new information to be posted more than it helps.

It does not bother me so much at home where I dont do much net research. But when I'm at work, where there's no ad blocking or special applications or actual work to keep me off the Internet, ya I get so irritated. Alot of things about the Internet irritate me haha

You're right this is really annoying.

When I find an article on a subject that I am at least somewhat interested in, having to go to multiple pages just for it can be annoying.

Especially seeing how if the text was smaller and there weren't soo many places to put ads on it, the article would be just one page.

I just leave those pages. If you're going to do that kind of crap with one little window per page, you're not getting ad revenue from me. I might be a bit nicer if it's an ajax-based window to try to adapt for mobile, but even then it's annoying as heck.

I doubt they'll go away, it's one of those dumb strategies marketing people think will improve their search ranking and gain more ad revenue when in reality, it makes their customers more angry and results in fewer people wanting to use their site.
