movies/tv Thread for lovers of documentaries.

I am not surrounded by people who watch documentaries. My parents would always shut them off if I wanted to watch them, or my old friends couldn't stomach 2 minutes of a documentary. I am a "details" person. I want to know as much as possible behind the scenes. My favorite documentaries are the horror movie ones, I am in fact watching the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 documentary. Another favorite of course is the Brony 2012 documentary, I know that doesn't count as a good documentary, because it was a bias production and didn't explore anything else about our fandom. Anything extra I can get out of a movie or subject I am always willing to do.

I've spent every spare moment on watching documentaries when I was a kid, and even in my teens. Mosty whatever was currently on Discovery,  Nat Geo, Animal Planet and later History Channel (back when it was good). Even today I'd rather rewatch Wild Russia than turn on a news channel. Unfortunately, after many years of avid watching I know most if the stuff they air... My favourite subjects are history, nature, space, and popular science. Also military: from hardware, history,  tactics, and modern warfare. I also watched a slew of War on Terror docs with raw combat footage, like Restrepo.

I'd watch a documentary over nearly any fabular film...

You can close the thread now.

Assuming you are saying documentaries are boring, I'd say no. We will never close this thread.

Many people around the world (myself included) really like documentaries a lot. It's not always good to step away from reality too often. It's always good to know what is happening in the world around us so we don't fall behind.

The Wings shows, I always loved watching them.

I got into the series by stumbling across Wings of the Luftwaffe  episodes online, and from there I found Wings of the Red Star. They're all wonderful to watch. If you're not a plane lover, though.... ehn? Might not be for you.

I love documentaries...mostly historical ones though, I'm not a fan of sports and Biographical documentaries.

Unsolved Mysteries is sort of a hybrid documentary, they reenact actual cases. I know it's just a tv show though.

War Diaries: 1914 is freaking AMAZING, using actual letters and journal entries from people on all sides of WWI.

Blue Planet, Life, pretty much all the BBC documentaries are incredible.

There's a trick to documentaries, though- sourcing. Read the credits carefully, and corroborate their sources. Anybody can make a film about anything and say it's a documentary- the clown who started the 9/11 Truther movement with a 'documentary' called Loose Change used doctored footage and slapdash editing to make it SEEM like he was telling the truth, when even a half-assed search finds massive gaping holes in the narrative.

Then again, as a Historian, I hold research in very high esteem. :)

I love that one ^ ^

Though to be completely honest I'm more of youtube learner, the lower video durations aid my shrinking attention span. o-o

I have almost every single episode of Unsolved Mysteries on my external drive. Yes, it is possibly my best tv show of all time.

I have a strong love for Documentaries myself and I always check Netlflix or Youtube (there's a lot of them on there) for any new ones. I personally enjoy ones about Nature, Space, History and Certain biographical ones, depending on the subject matter.  I actually didn't expect to find a documentary thread on any of the forums I lurked upon, glad to see this. :)

I love watching documentaries every now and then too. Mostly on the technology and science side. Sometimes I even like to watch documentaries about our ancient societies. I also enjoy watching docs about space. Always fascinating to watch, in my opinion.

I must warn all of you there are some bad documentaries on Netflix about Dinosaurs, two of which use the exact same CGI animations to convey their point, just dub over different points. I don't remember what they're called but I'll let you know when I remember.

Oh has anyone seen a good crime documentary as of late? Any recommendations?

Youtube is also a bad place to find a load of ghost/alien 'documentaries' that are just video clips strung back to back, with no narration or structure.

Not that I don't watch them, but still.

I have watched a lot of them over the years, I love learning new things so I watch a lot of documentaries especially historical ones. Here are a few of my favorites.

Race for the White House: It is a series being aired on CNN with new episodes every Sunday, each episode analysis a different US presidential race. So far they have done Truman Vs Dewey, Kennedy Vs Nixon, Lincoln vs Douglas (and the two other candidates that were also in the race), John Quincy Adams vs Andrew Jackson and a few others. So far so good with my only complaints being the historical inaccuracies in the Lincoln one. It is true that Lincoln didn't like slavery but his main priority was keeping the union together and didn't take a more aggressive stance until during the Civil War with the Emancipation Proclamation which contrary to popular misconception didn't free all slaves but was a war measure that didn't apply to the southern states that were still loyal to the union.

10 Things you Didn't Know About: this examines a different top and lists 10 obscure facts most people don't know about it.

How the States Got Their Shapes: This is a fascinating documentary series about how the various US states became what they are today.

Forbidden History: This one goes into a lot of theory, some theories are more credible than others but it is all rather interesting.

Dark Ages: This is History Channel series about the "Dark Ages" that is as long as it is informative.

I love documentaries, I watch them like some people watch regular tv-series. There isn't a specific genre I like, as long as it's good I will watch it. :P

Listening to them helps me write and oddly enough watching them helps prepare me for recording. I think it sets my mind at ease and in a critical state that allows me to read my scripts relatively easily.

I've been a fan of documentaries ever since i was a kid! I specially love those dealing with animals, history, the planet and the universe and many other stuff. A shame that a good deal of science-themed networks are plagued by lots of pathetic reality shows nowadays...

Anyway, some of my most favorite include:

BBC's Walking With series

Animal Planet's The Most Extreme

Dogfights

Ancient Aliens-Yeah, i know this one's a lot of bogus and blatant lies, but i usually watch it because of just how plain hilarious it can get. It also helps me feel better if i had a bad day, gotta admit, the silliness is so strong it makes you crack a smile. Plus, our friend Giorgio nearly finishes his transformation into a Super Saiyan.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have some pretty cool Bob Dylan documentaries like No Direction Home directed by Martin Scorsese and Don't Look Back by D.A. Pennebaker.

Marwencol is really cool, Herb and Dorothy was a neat watch, Revolution, a 1968 documentary about the counterculture movement in San Francisco, is a cool time capsule with a good soundtrack. Also I really enjoyed Michael Moore documentaries at a previous time in my life, namely Bowling for Columbine and Capitalism: A Love Story.
