If you haven't watched S6E5 Gauntlet of Fire watch before reading further

 

 

 

I just came to realize that the size of the scepter of fire may have been built proportional to the first dragon lord that started the tradition of the Gauntlet of Fire and that would mean he wouldn't be a giant dragon like Torch and be closer to Garble size or so.

I kind of think its because the dragonlord title is meant to be given to a young dragon, and thus the Scepter is sized proportionally to an adolescent dragon instead of an adult. (notice how zero adults showed up in this episode besides torch)

Or the way I see it, the adult dragons didn't bother to show up because they know there is no true "Dragon Lord", and is only a ceremonial title at best.

 

I think if the Dragon Lord was taken seriously, the ponies would have known about it sooner.

To add onto this, the first dragon lord must've been pretty young. Or maybe their puberty was delayed. Or maybe they just happened to be small for their age. Or the first lord wasn't that young, but the successor (or one of the successors) was. There's a bunch of guesses to be made after this episode aired, not that I'm complaining.

The scepter and the armor that Ember wore also implies the dragons may have had a level of craftsmenship which can lead to a civilization in the past before they became cave dwelling nomadic barbarians.
