movies/tv The Digimon: Digital Monsters Thread

Hiya Digimon fans!

This thread is dedicated to a series we truly loved as fillies and colts. Digimon!

For those that don't know Digimon. It's kinda like Pokemon but it has it's own twist. You see, Digimon is short for digital monsters that only exist in the Digital World. Tamers (people from the real world) have a device known as the Digivice which is used to tame Digimon and train them at a higher level. That means they can let Digimon digivolve to a stronger form. For example, Agumon digivolves into Greymon and can digivolve again into MetalGreymon. That's one of things that keeps us ponies hyped up for what happens next.

Of course, the cartoon series wasn't the only thing that keeps us entertained. It's the games and toys that go with it. Examples of these are Digimon World, the D-Tector and even Digimon Heroes (which I'm playing now).

From the cartoon series and video games, the franchise has had a place in our hearts. Heck, it was one of the cartoons I used to watch all the time. Now back to bring the nostalgia to our hearts, let's talk about what we've experienced back then and how it performs now.

And I've got the perfect way to start this thread off:

My favorite Digimon is Veemon by the way because not only does it have a great design, it's digivolution line is impressive.

Speaking of Tamers, that really was one of the better seasons. I mean I love Tai, Davis, and co. but Tamers was really next level. It almost acted as a kind of deconstruction of itself, showing the grave implications that even the globe hopping portion of Season 2 never really touched. First and Second season were great in terms of spectacle but Third season delivered on substance.

My favorite series is the one they transformed into the digi-mon.

And my favorite digi-mon is Knightmon.

That's fourth season and I think they were channeling the fantasies of kids who watched the show. "Hey kids, forget sitting back and letting others be awesome, you can BECOME the Digimon!"

I've watched all the episodes of Tamers except the one where Wargrowlmon digivolves into 'something nasty' and the last one. It was one cartoon that came out strong. Tell you what, I think Tamers was the darkest out of the rest when it comes to the story.

Ohhhhh THAT episode was horrifying! Makes Tai's "Skullgreyman" episode look like Disney's dancing skeletons! The "ending" of Tamers wasn't just one episode it was Attack on Titan/Evangelion arc of Lovecraftian meets Skynet and WOW how many references can I put in one post?

I agree. Just thinking about that episode makes me nervous not because of the Digimon itself but how it was presented. The pains the Tamers experience in that one was strong.

(Oh no. Now I'm starting to think of Skullgreymon dancing to the Spooky Scary Skeletons music.)

Oh right, favorite Digimon. Ummm . . . wow you know I really can't pick. I'm naturally a splitter rather than a grouper so I would follow up that question with "Digi-destined Digimon or unaffiliated with them?" Or, "which season?" Or, "individual or the whole digi-volution?"

I've always preferred Digimon to Pokemon thematically but for some reason I've seen and played more Pokemon stuff. What hell.

Frontier was my favorite season. I really wish they'd put that one on DVD. I know the first three are and I heard they were working on the fourth but no idea if that ever came to anything.

I might go on a Digimon video game buying spree soon. There's a few I miss (Rumble) and a few I never really got to play much of (Digimon World games). Problem is that these games tend to be stupidly expensive and rare. I tried to buy Digimon World Dusk awhile back and the people I ordered it from couldn't find it. They were legitimately the only seller I was willing to trust for it too. >_<

And oh man don't even get me started on the movie. I love it. It's probably my favorite part of the anime. I know it's technically three movies put in one when they released it in the US but who cares? Dat Omnimon scene.

Yep, Frontier's my favorite. It solved the problem of the kids just standing around while their giant dinosaurs and colossal bugs did all the work (which Pokemon did slightly better) and because I'm a fan of Henshin Hero shows like Power Rangers and Kamen Rider. Though it kinda got stale near the end with the two Knight Digimon always wining no matter what.

Tamer's Bio-Evolution was a similar thing actually with an actual Kamen Rider reference to boot in the form of Justimon. Speaking of Tamers, Beelzemon was one of my favorite characters, especially when he got his arm cannon.

Okay. How about 'What is your favorite individual of the whole digivolution'?

Okay. How about 'What is your favorite individual of the whole digivolution'?

Well even that has to be split up. So for the sake of answering the question I will answer my favorite of the first digi-destined team. Sorry, narrowing down is absurdly hard for me to do for these things.

Seraphimon. Yeah we only see him for like two seconds in the movie but it's nice to actually see something approximating an actually accurate biblical description of an angel, although he's missing two heads, in all their wondrous and terrible glory. (They say "fear not" for a reason.)

seraphimon_by_sylvainfinrod-d6081eo.jpg

Speaking of which, if I were to keep it focused on the show itself I would say Angemon. I actually think they went a little too sci-fi for his ultimate. The Champion level Angemon has a lot of Judeo-Christian symbolism beyond the obvious. First of all he has six wings which makes him one of the Seraphim, one of the highest choirs of angels. Second of all is his staff which might be an allusion to the Shepherd's staff, the Shepherd being the gentle guide archetype used by both Moses and Christ. Third of all those metal rivets on his chest. I never got what those were as a kid but perhaps they are meant to symbolize a form of stigmata? Lastly, and a bit of a stretch, but maybe the blue cloth is in reference to the typical garb of the Virgin Mary? I like Patamon's whole Holy/Divine theme as he works up his ladder.

Count me in the rare camp of people that actually enjoy both Pokemon and Digimon.

However I believe that Digimon has the better anime, while Pokemon has the better video games.

Tamers is one of my favorite animes.

I really enjoyed the considerably darker tone that it has over all the other seasons (excluding Tri).

This is especially evident through the episode where Guilmon dark digivolves into Megiadramon.  That has to not only be one of the darkest episodes of the series, but one of my favorites due to how emotionally powerful it is.

My favorite Digimon would have to be Omnimon/Omegamon due to how awesome it was to see him in Our War Game, and Beelzemon who had a really good arch in Tamers.

I think that episode was considered to be the best because of what it contains. I can feel just feel the tension by just thinking about it.

Also, are you talking about the second part of the Digimon Movie because I'm following you on Omnimon. Omnimon was great in that movie when we saw his real power. I didn't know what it was when I saw him the first time but now I knew.

From my experience browsing the internet Pokemon and Digimon have something of a fandom rivalry, but I think most of it happened when Digimon was still a lot more relevant in the western market than it currently is today and both were at the peak of their popularity.

Actually Digimon the Movie is made up of cut up pieces of the first three japanese Digimon Moives, Digimon Adventure, Our War Game!, and Hurricane Touchdown.

Now that you mention it, I don't know why it's called Digimon the Movie when it's just three movies put into one. It would've been better if it was just a box that contain three different movies people can choose to watch. I think that's what made a certain amount of people in the cinema confused when they saw it the first time.

Well it IS a movie ABOUT Digimon so you can't say the title is not indicative. And I actually kind of like the separate vignettes. Admittedly the stakes drop like a rock in the ocean at the third one but it was still fun.

Yeah, at least it was a good experience. I remembered doing the voices of those Digimon when I was watching the movie as a colt.

While I haven't been watching Digimon recently, I can say that my favorite season of all time is Digimon Frontier. I loved the characters as well as the overall story.

I remembered watching some Digimon Frontier episodes straight up to the introduction of Korikakumon. After that, I just finished there. Might head back to watching it again if I can.

I've always been a fan of the first series.  The second series was good, Digimon Tamers was insanely good, and after that, I didn't watch any of the series after that, but I'm going to one of these days, I promise XD

As for favorite digimon, thats Angemon.  I've loved him since he first appeared, and was so disappointed when he didn't show up again until fairly late in the series.

I remember watching Digimon a long time ago and it was a really cool show. I watched Adventure, Adventure 02, and Tamers then I stopped for a while. I remember hanging out with some of my friends and they played Digimon on TV and I was surprised. I didn't know they made Frontier at that time and it was really interesting to watch. I tried watching Data Squad, but it didn't really catch my interest. I remember playing a lot of Digimon: Rumble Arena and an online Digimon game on the computer. I also remember getting a complete DVD boxset of Tamers and I might watch it again like old times. My favorite Digimon would have to be a tie between Gabumon and Veemon. My favorite season would definitely have to be Digimon Frontier.

It is nice to walk down memory lane, isn't it? I haven't heard of Digimon Frontier until I got the D-Tector. Man, that toy was so much fun...

You know...if you have the console, you would also enjoy Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. So far, it's really nice to look at. You should check it out if you can.

It's really great walking down memory lane  :). I used to have a toy digivice. I think it was the D3 digivice from Adventure 02. I've heard of that game and I remember one of my friends played it. It looks really fun and I might check it out sometime. Thanks for letting me know about the game  ^_^.

No problem Dynamo Pad. You would be amazed by the visuals when you try it out.

I never thought I would find a digimon thread even though it brings back some memories. I still own the physical copy of Digimon World 2 and 3, and Digimon Rumble Arena. My Interest of the series lasted till the end of the Digimon Tamers season. I still own the D3 and D-Power digivices although I did lose my blue card that came with the D-Power Digivice. I have bad memories on D-Power and I got stuck at the 3rd area and had to grind on levels and farm items. I still own one of the old Digivices that similar to tamagotchi device, but I probably Lost it. Digimon World 1 was I liked the most, but probably my brother borrowed it from a friend. I still remember how I first cleared digimon world 1 and if my memory serves right, I cleared the game with monzaemon. The other device I owned was the D-Terminal as well.

I do recall that Digimon season 1 and 2 was aired on nicktoons channel, but the Digimon Tamers didn't make it on the air. I'm guessing these 2 seasons lasted on the nicktoons channel till the end of these 2 seasons.
