Was Twilight (The Books/Movies) the worst phenomenon of the last 10 years?

(WARNING: WHAT I SAY HERE, IS NOT APPLIED TO ALL TWILIGHT FANS)

You know, i recently laid down in my bed and thought of all the stuff that happend in this world in the last 10 years, ever since i finished school and i must say, it's kinda amazing, because back then, we never thought that the internet would be a thing that we would use, on a daily basis. But i digress.

One of those more cultural things that came into my mind, was the Twilight Books, or the movies, which i know more about. I know back then, it was the cool thing to bash these Twilight fans and we all joked about these movies. Back then, it really interested me that much and i just thought that these movies simply suck. But i really ask myself, what kinda values do these movies teach?

I mean yeah, they have sparkling vampires, which we all facepalmed about and pretty much ruin the myth about vampires. But that's far from the worst thing here. Let's look what these stories are really about. It's about a girl named Bella, who has no redeeming qualities as a character whatsoever. She is selfish, manipulative and just flat annoying and bland. Then, we got this Edward. Who talks like he is bored out of his mind, everytime he sees Bella and who obviously lived for hundreds of years, apparently never finding anybody more interesting then Bella.

Question? What kinda interest (except for sexual interests) do they both have?

It's something that should be a basis in every relationship, to share the interests of your better half. But the problem is, they both have no interests whatsoever and this really bothers me.

And between that, is this Jacob guy, who never wears a shirt i might add, who comes off as a person that could rape you. He says stuff like "You love me, you don't admit it yet." Or "Better be dead, then being with him." And that pretty much spawns that whole "Team Jacob vs. Team Edward" Commercial bullshit, that is actually a thing, that is being discussed by preteen girls.

What does that say, about those preteen girls? Do most of these Twilight fans dream of a time, where they will find those man, that will fight for her no matter what? Bella is pretty much the worst form, of a damsel in distress and it's kinda bothersome, that there are girls who look up to her.

I know, this might seem kinda like an SJW post, that you would expect on a Tumblr blog and it's funny, because i really don't like these kinda posts. But this is something i really don't understand and kinda creeps me out, thinking that there might be girls, who grew up actually thinking like that and actually using Twilight as some sort of life guidance.

What do you think about it? Do i worry too much? Am i too harsh?

I myself thought the whole Twilight kerfuffle was just a passing trend. It will doubtfully have any lasting effect on people. Just dust in the wind in my opinion but who knows maybe many girls will be arguing for Team Edward or Team Jacob for generations XD

I never read any of the books, or watched the movies, but the things I've seen from those who actually like it is some of the cringiest things I have ever seen.

(edited)

Me and my brother always assumed it was popular because it was so easy for teenage girls to pit themselves in Bella's place.

It still has the idea that Vampires sparkle in the sun and that werewolves are shirtless hunks. For those alone it's going to hell.

Still wouldn't say it was the worst phenomenon though, I lived through a point where Tek-Decks were popular among high school kids

Damn this is actually kind of serious isn't it

I mean, 50SoG was directly spawned from a Twilight fanfic. Let's just say this series does not have the best views of consent...
