gaming Playstation 4 Pro Revealed!

Video on the subject soon:

Ultimately, I think this is a good move. Sony is bringing out a system that is powerful enough to handle the demand for 4K gaming, without making it an obligation. On top of that, by bringing it to a modest 4.20 Teraflops it's powerful enough to handle the games without much compromise while being able to be delivered at an affordable price tag. This is ultimately I think a great idea on their part.

However Microsoft's response is... Interesting, and possibly telling: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-09-08-microsofts-bullish-response-to-sonys-ps4-pro-and-slim

Microsoft more or less picked fun at the fact that the system can't play 4K blurays which simply isn't a huge demand. On top of this they poked fun at how the Xbox One S supports 4K streaming and HDR which the PS4 Pro can do. They also decided to boast their 6 Teraflops for the Scorpio which is unrevealed.

To me this comes off as straw grabbing. I have a feeling Microsoft is more worried about this than they are letting on. The only thing they could think to do was brag about a non-point, and then scream "6 Teraflops!" which to me translates to "barrage them with specs!" we've heard this song and dance from Microsoft before in terms of the original Xbox... It didn't end so well for them there. Microsoft might be worried that at 4.2 it is still respectable in specs and that $400 price tag... Might be alarming to them. At $400, this is a very affordable 4K gaming device, and it's going to be on the market an entire year before their Scorpio, so it'll be even cheaper by the time the Scorpio arrives. This could be troubling for Microsoft.

Ultimately though, current PS4 owners are not being left out, as full support will continue for the original, and HDR will be added to the original as well to put it on par with the Xbox One S. Instead of making people buy a new console for HDR, Sony decided to simply give it out for free to current owners which is a good step of faith towards loyal users.

I definitely will be picking up the Pro later, not around the holiday season though, because a lot of expenses are coming up, unless someone loves me enough to throw one my way. However I am very excited about this, and this is ultimately a good move.

Also freakin' 3 USB ports finally. WITH USB 3.0 support. Thank you for listening, Sony.

Looks good. hopefully the wifi and cooling are better.

We know the system will support 5GHz wifi, and it's a larger unit, so it's possible!

Only thing I've really got to say about the PS4 Pro is that it looks really dumb to me.

It seems like all they did was take a PS4 and stacked another layer on top of it.

Appearance wise, yes.

However the system has 3 times the graphical power as the previous model, supports 5GHz wireless (a new standard), USB 3.0 instead of 2.0, 3 USB ports instead of 2, 4K streaming support, 4K HDR, 4K native resolution gaming, improved 1080p60FPS support for games, and superior VR support.

Under the hood, the changes are vast.

And backwards compatible with all past generation Playstation games without buying digital remakes, when? Never?

To be fair... At this late in the game, what's the point of adding backwards compatibility? If anyone was waiting to get a PS4 because they wanted support for PS3/PS2/PS1, they would have just bought a PS3 by now.

I'm so glad I've waited on buying a PS4. I was going to buy a second hand one, but I think I'm going to wait for the Pro. I'll probably wait until second-hand ones come out for a little cheaper, as I don't use consoles too much. I'm excited to see how everything runs on it!

Because everyone has that kind of money to throw around.

I did, and I do own both a PS3 and PS4.

...But I don't have that kind of money anymore. KH3 better be for all PS4's. I DO NOT like the idea of consoles getting redesigns like the New 3DS. Consoles cost a pretty penny. When I bought my PS4, I was buying a system for the whole generation.

Thankfully the New 3DS has yet to get anything exclusive to it that matters to me, and I hope that the PS4 Pro follows in its footsteps.

In 3 years since the PS4's launch, if you can't afford to pay $50-80 to get a PS3 used to play old games, then you clearly don't have enough money to be playing any video games. I mean I could understand being more upset on day one, but we're almost 3 years later now and it's been obvious for a while now that they are not adding backwards compatibility to the PS4. At that point people should have saved some cash to get a PS3 to play their older games. It's not like they are hard to come by, and 3 years is plenty of time to save up to get one on top of a PS4.

As far as we know and as far as Sony has stated, all PS4 games will work on both systems, but the newer model will support better graphic options, and that should be it. The first generation PS4 should be able to play all games that the PS4 Pro can play. Sony is enforcing this quite strictly to prevent people from being left behind. So unless this changes in the future, the PS4 you own should still play KH3. However since we don't have a release date for KH3, I can't promise anything will change between now and then. That's kind of up to Square Enix.

Hopefully follows better in its footsteps by not having anything exclusive to it, since that's what Sony promised. But sadly, promises mean little from game companies as we've all learned. However I think you SHOULD be safe. If not... Well, all we can do then is just learn not to trust companies. I doubt anyone will have anything to worry about.

And I did, a long time ago. The point is to replace Playstation 3. They're not doing a good job lol

Backwards compatibility was not always needed. The NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube didn't have it and they all did fine. You buy new consoles for NEW games, if you want to play the old ones, hold onto your older consoles. They can't support everything forever. It's the same as demanding windows bring back support for 16-bit applications when we are running on 64-bit/32-bit systems. Support for older stuff ends eventually and the demand to get it running on newer hardware declines. That's sadly just the way it is.

They're doing just fine, the sales speak for themselves.

The fact that the PS4 Pro doesn't do 4K Blu-Ray yet the Xbox One S does is kinda hilarious to me.

Beyond that, I have no interest in Playstation anymore, so this new thing is meh to me. However, I find one thing rather peculiar. I remember clearly when the Xbox One S and the Scorpio were both announced, doom and gloom was everywhere. People said that Microsoft killed the S right there despite the Scorpio not launching until late 2017, and despite the fact that the S does have some improvements in its hardware, but when Sony announced the Pro and the Slim, nobody says anything like that. It is all positive then, even though the Slim is literally a smaller PS4 and the Pro comes out just two months later.

Now, I am not asking for doom and gloom for the hell of it, but gamers, come on, have some consistency, please?

One last thing I will say, the design of both the Slim and the Pro is...bleh, to me.

The fact that the PS4 Pro doesn't do 4K Blu-Ray yet the Xbox One S does is kinda hilarious to me.

I find it more hilarious that that fact was the only thing Microsoft could respond with. Like the PS4 Pro supports 4K gaming, HDR getting added to the original model (whereas the Xbox One required users to buy the One S to get that) and is a 4K beefier console a whole year before the Scorpio, and the only two things Microsoft could think of were "well uhhh... We support 4K bluray movies!" and "Well... Uh... We'll have 6 teraflops! I mean... We don't have it yet... And we haven't revealed the Scorpio yet... But we assure you! It's better!"

Like it's pathetic that the ONLY defense they could muster was a non-point. No one really cares about 4k Blurays. Most people are watching HD movies via streaming services and 4K blurays are super uncommon. Sony decided it wasn't a necessary feature. Instead focusing on gaming.

Mostly because Microsoft announced a non-upgrade. The One S now looks pathetic comparatively. Microsoft made people buy a whole new console for HDR, Sony is giving it out to people in a firmware update and when they introduced a new system, it was an actual hardware upgrade.

The Slim though I'll give you, it's a shit idea. It's ugly as hell, introduces virtually nothing and really they could have just kept the original PS4 and the Pro.

I think the main reason though people are giving the Pro more of a pass is that Sony actually didn't announce it until they had a product to show and sell. They gave the full specs, they gave the price, and the price was low. $400 is going to be hard to beat. Microsoft announcing a 6 Teraflop system worried people because it's hard to make 6 Teraflops cheap. I mean the GTX Titan performed around 6 Teraflops and it was $1,000 when it came out. So people were more worried about an overpriced system.

Now I think they were right to be worried. Sony is putting a $400 price tag on this system, and at 4.20 Teraflops... The difference at 6 Teraflops is going to be hardly noticeable, but getting the price down to $400 with such an expensive piece of hardware will be a challenge.

The fact that Microsoft is screaming "6 teraflops!" in response to this tells me there is a distinct possibility that they are a little concerned now. They didn't mention the price point at all. Which to me says they are hoping to distract everyone with "6 Teraflops!" so that they don't notice the price tag. I mean by the time the Xbox One Scorpio comes out, this thing will be almost a year old more than likely which means it'll be down to maybe as low as $300. That's SUPER HARD to beat.

This race is just getting more and more interesting.

Then call me old fashioned, because they have always done it until the PS4.

PS3 launched without PS2 support. They added it in after enough nagging.

The reason for the removal was the switch to x86 based processors meant that native emulation was not possible unless they planted the PS3 chip inside the system, which would have made it more expensive. It was an executive decision, and one that paid off well.

Nintendo only did it with the Wii onward and only one generation back. Like I said call me old fashioned, but this is keeping me from having faith in the PS4 enough to buy one.

I don't buy new systems to play last gen games. I buy them for new games.

Now I have an excuse to take my PS4 back from my kids.

Step 1. Buy Pro

Step 2. Buy VR

Step 3. Put them in living room

Step 4. Wait for kids to jump on bait.

Step 5. When they are distracted run into the oldest kids room and grab my PS4 and escape to my room.

Perfect plan.

Seriously though, I'm mildly excited for native 4K ... but I just want my damn system back. And yes this was a solid business move by Sony to reach that price point.

Definitely. Sony has made some dumb decisions in the past, but this was ultimately a smart move.

Now that we're getting an update on the two systems I think I might go with the PS4 Pro for the same reason I went with the PS2 over the Xbox and the PS3 over the 360. Because Microsoft simply has nothing to offer, they never have. It really doesn't matter how many terraflops or .15 GHz or whatever other specs the Xbone has over the PS4 because to me it doesn't really matter as the specs are pretty much similar, the differences are just minor. The important question I have is what games do they have to offer? Sony has won this over Microsoft in every console generation. They've had Infamous, Last of Us, God of War, Little Big Planet, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Killzone, Demons Souls, The Resistance series, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Yakuza, and all these other games over the past three generations and Microsoft has only had Gears of War and Halo. Other than that their library consists of titles that are either on PC or on Sony's consoles. I already have a PC so I'm quite happy with it and other than that I might get a PS4 for the games that are only coming out on consoles like Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV and Only Sony has exclusive games that I'm looking forward to. So if I'm going to pick a console I'd rather not buy the one with the IMHO inferior library.

Looks interesting I guess. I have no interest in getting it, or the scorpio, though.

Not a bad price point, however and honestly, 4k isn't totally necessary for gaming as 1080p is still a good option. And as long as it runs games at a good framerate, that's good. I honestly feel this will sell better than the Scorpio, tbh. I mean, the price point is just more appealing. But again, I've no interest in either console. I'll stick with my PC, I won't buy a console on exclusives alone, unless it's Nintendo, anyway.

Oh, and the design is terrible.

It's like Sony looked at sentiments towards the Wii being 'two Gamecubes duct-taped together' and took it literally design-wise and stacked a half a PS4 on top and called it a day :P

Nah but for serious, og PS4 is just fine for me since I don't have a 4K TV, but for new players you should just wait for this.

Incorrect. The white PS3 had full support out of the box, and the black one had to be patched in. Why do you think people 'nagged'? Because it's a feature that shouldn't be removed.

I was mistaken, I apologize. Thanks for pointing that out!

Also if it paid off so well then why are there people like me? I'm probably a minority, but I still say this is keeping me from buying.

Well unfortunately when it comes to business, majority rules. The PS4 is super successful, so in that sense... It paid off.

And that's where we should probably agree to disagree from this point onward. You're still comparing apples to oranges. I buy new systems, particularly Sony systems, to play both old and new games. The feature not being there in at least the Pro still makes me not want to buy it.

Alright, though not buying the new system because it won't let you play old games basically makes it so now you are limited to ONLY old games.

Xenosaga

Sucks that Nintendo kind of got the rights to the Xeno series now. They have handled it poorly. Such as making Xenoblade Chronicles a Gamestop exclusive and taking forever to bring it to the west, and then Gamestop gave it a limited release making it ultra rare. Then when they re-release it, the game required the New 3DS which not a lot of people had at the time. I hear it's a good series, but Nintendo is bogging it up with stupid releases.

Power isn't everything.

Truth, thus why I think this is a good move by Sony. Microsoft can boast 6 Teraflops all they like but when they have no real exclusives and their system is expensive, what good will it do?

but MS made even more stupid decisions when it decided to put most of their games on the PC. MS has always had an extermely weak (though decent) exclusive library.

Yeah, a lot of bribing third party devs to get some exclusives sadly.

So the rumor about the reason for the Xbox Scorpio wait is that they're waiting until Zen and Vega come out, which would make the 6TFLOP figure believable.

Anyway, back on topic, I might actually get one of these over the summer next year since I'm curious to see if the new Gran Turismo ends up being any good.

EDIT: Also, am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with the design?
