In addition to the symbolic stars representing their passing, I believe Applejack mentions to Applebloom in the episode the CMC got their cutie marks something long the lines of, "If Ma and Pa were here, they'd be so proud of you," (I don't remember the exact quote, but it's close enough, I'm sure). Emphasis on If they WERE HERE. Implying they no longer are alive and well to celebrate the accomplishment. Check out my voice-acting demo reels on Casting Call Club, if you'd like. At the end of the episode, the shot fades to a view of Sweet Apple Acres as two shooting stars fly through the sky.
