No holiday or annual comic for 2016?

Kind of a question that I wanted to ask if others also could confirm this,

 

Is there no holiday or annual release for 2016 this year? I collect these ones on the side of my pony comic collection and they're kind of annoying to find for me because they seem to fall under the radar a bit when it comes to releases. They also don't seem to be released every year? I'm talking about physical comic release (not digital). 

 

But just wanted to confirm, is there no annual or holiday pony comic release for 2016?

The comic Annuals are apparently a bit confused. There's the 2013 Annual primarily focused on Sunset Shimmer, the 2014 Annual primarily focused on the Power Ponies.... and one scheduled for release in February 2017 focused on the Guardians of Harmony. A digital-only one is available now, but the physical one won't be available for a couple of months. Not quite sure why they skipped 2015 and 2016 as in my experience Annuals are released in December for the Christmas sales and are numbered for that year. But then I'm coming from a British family background where comic annuals used to be a big, big thing on Christmas. I've still got Beano's and Dandy's and the like from when I was a kid.

I still have a couple of those myself--they're currently within hands reach of me right now--that were given to me as gifts back when I was living in England a long time ago.

 

On the subject of the annuals, I've always believed that there wasn't an annual last year or this year because of the controversy that stemmed from the 2014 annual because of a certain OC being included, and that IDW didn't want to have a repeat of that. Guess my theory doesn't hold much water since they are bringing the annual back next year.

 

As for the holiday specials, I have no idea why there wasn't one for 2016.
