Recommended Posts

I drew this picture for the midnight release of Diablo 3.
She's perfect, except I can't help but feeling there's something missing...
oh yeah, COLOUR!

I want to digitally colour her,
which program is easiest to learn and use.
:)
Thanks for the help!

sure if you want to,

google search "diablo 3 female monk" for colour reference.

I would look at the cosplay's since I prefer the brighter colours.

Easiest to learn? Probably Paint Tool SAI...

PaintTool SAI is free to download.

Thanks! I'll look into both of these and see which works better :)

SAI is amazing, if you're using Windows. The Mac port for SAI is horrible.

Inkscape is also great.

Inkscape is a vector program which would make it hard for her to "paint" her drawing.

Paint.NET is hardly a painting program at all, the brush options are close to none without a plugin. it is literally an enhanced MS Paint which makes it good for pixel art, but painting? Mine was well use MS Paint in that case. The paint that comes with windows 7 is virtually as capable as Paint.NET...

Well i wrote this up and then went and reread what was posted xD have it anyways :P

To be honest a decent program will take a while to learn; SAI, photoshop, and gimp are all powerful tools but in terms of learning curve they are about the same. It all comes down to how much time you put into each program. Though personally I would say photoshop has the lowest learning curve to two reasons, one its a product released by a corporation so you will have less "runtime" problems and two it is more prominent so you will see more tutorials out for it.

Inkscape also happens to be a vectoring app :)

and i can confirm that the Mac port of SAI is horrible.

Being from a corporation doesn't mean much. Majority of the good documentation cost money. Photoshop has the largest learning curve from the listen programs because it isn't just a painting program, its a photo editing program. Majority of its tools are based around photo editing. PaintTool SAI is a painting program, all of its tools are meant for painting and they come with enough options to provide a preset tool that a beginner could use right off the bat. It also has very few options which means learning the whole thing will take less time. PaintTool SAI also has some brush mechanics that you simply cannot recreate in current versions of Photoshop and is more akin to some of the mechanics in Painter (from corel).

sources: I am a Photoshop expert :]

ON a side note, Photoshop is the industry standard for painting as well as photo editing.

I've colored a lot with Paint.NET, it works fairly well. It was a long time ago and I wasn't very good at drawing (animuuuu) but it still came out good for a beginner. I'm sorry for posting my art here but I'd just like to provide an example of what you can do with PDN. http://th03.devianta...oom-d2ygbog.png There are no textures like you could get with something like Photoshop or Sai, but if you're not looking for anything super fancy then it is perfect. It is very user friendly because it is so similar to MS Paint.

I know its technically capable just as MS paint is able to make this. The problem is that it's like using MS Paint to do a super high rez painting, its not the best solution especially since there are other better free alternatives.

Oh I agree that it's not the best (or even in the top 5) but if you're not looking to do a super detailed coloring then it is easier to use than some other programs in my opinion. PS I bet that pixel art took 60+ hours to complete. ;A;

I'm aware of that, which is why I suggested it. She's already drawn the image, and coloring it in with a vector program would make it far cleaner and visually appealing than if she manually did it. That's just from my experience, with my own art.

Vectors are only really equipped to do cell shading so its an entirely different style from painting. Clean is rarely the goal of artists unless they are doing some sort of graphic design.

To get anything except cell shading from a vector program, you would need a lot of time and a lot of knowledge and skill in vectors.

So generally, inkscape is not a solution to a painting problem :

I did some quick mumbo-jumbos in Photoshop and here's a version of the picture with all of the white turned clear, just make a layer behind it and color away ;)

I use Gimp. It works pretty well, but you'll have to get used to it a bit.

Oh, and make sure you darken your lines completely if you use gimp. I tend to draw lightly, and as a result, Gimp completely screws me over >.<

If you are referring to scanned lines then you need to use levels to make them appear.
