Advice? Well that just depends on what you want to use the forums for a place to disscuse things? That'd be sugar cube corner. Interested in talking about the show as it appears in the episodes? That'd be show discussion. If you're interested in interacting with the world of equestria as your own character or a cannon character. Then you'd like the Rp sections.

If you're interested in making friends then normally you can find nice people in every section!

There's no need to worry, just take a look at sections and their description will guide you.

As for tips... All what's important is to be nice and follow the rules.  

Additionally, if you want a quick introduction to what MLPF has to offer, then see if anything sounds appealing to you:
- talk about ponies in general
- discuss Friendship is Magic episodes
- discuss Equestria Girls movies/episodes
- discuss upcoming MLP Movie
- discuss previous generations of MLP
- post your and/or comment on pony-related artwork
- post your and/or comment on pony-related music tracks
- post your and/or comment on pony-related movies/animations
- post your and/or comment on pony-related written works
- post your and/or comment on pony-related games/apps
- post your and/or comment on other pony-related works
- post your and/or comment on non-pony-related works
- post your original characters and/or enter the roleplay world (I believe there's community contribution requirement of 5+ posts)
- talk about everything you love, that doesn't even have anything to do with ponies
- have fun and play some forum games
- complain on real life and/or seek for advice (I believe there's community contribution requirement of 40+ posts)
- check the main page for more...
