You are stuck in the forest having an epic boss fight with a full grown grizzly bear. It wants to eat you and there is no reasoning with it. It has you cornered on a cliff overlooking a waterfall and a large lake. The only protection you have against the bear is a small combat knife. WYR stay and risk fighting the bear, trying to defeat it in battle with only your small knife or take the risk of jumping into the lake, not knowing how deep it is or if there are any sharp rocks at the bottom? I rather jump into a lake not knowing how deep it is, rather than risking my life to fight a bear with a small puny knife unless I slid its throat. The problem is that I don't have somepony and they probably wouldn't able to live that long. Plus, one dinky little year is just too short.
