I personally don't see her as part of the mane 6 because she has closer ties to characters outside of them like Trixie or Thorax or even Spike, however I do consider her a main character and a part of the main cast along with Spike and possibly the CMCs. She's definitely more of a major character than some big characters like Big Mac or Discord or the Princesses.

Not terribly, no. I don't think My Little Pony works that way.

Starlight's name isn't mentioned anywhere on the back of this DVD cover. More yet, she's only getting 3 episodes in Season 8, for what I've heard.

Here's the thing. I don't consider DVD covers to dictate who is and isn't a main character. The CMC aren't listed here, but I think anyone suggesting they aren't main characters is fooling themselves. Starlight has gotten several episodes effectively to herself, with no other main characters along, so I think denying she's a main character is futile. That's not even mentioning that season 6 technically still tethered her to Twilight most of the time, so I'm gonna take that with a grain of salt until we see a season 7 DVD cover. And I don't like Starlight, but I don't think her continued presence has anything to do with fan demand, nor does it indicate she'll overtake Twilight or whomever as the "protagonist." 

I have a somewhat unusual opinion here, but although I dislike Starlight, I would be somewhat interested in her taking over the show, because maybe it would force the writers to start taking some risks for a change. I want controversy. I'm sick of this show taking the safe route all the time. 

The mane six still got a fair bit of screen time in seasons 6 and 7, so I don't think they need more, but I'm kinda happy Starlight is having a reduced part in the show, if only because I don't really care about her, and I think 3 episodes per character is a comfortable balance which season 7 suffered for not maintaining. I just want better roles for the mane six, written by people who care enough to find fresh ideas instead of forcing a moral or a "logical next step." Kinda baffles me when people say there's nothing left to do with the mane six at this point.

Of course. She had better, because I watch this show for the interactions between many diverse characters, and I prefer the variety. The difference is, when you say equal, I can't help but think you are starting to segue into forced parity again. Not sure if that's the case.

Most Starlight episodes in season 6 are well... Quite mixed.

Starlight in season 7 though, a pretty good improvement.

I don't really care if she's going to take the mane 6's spotlight or not. Besides, most of the mane 6 had finished their arcs. While I don't think they will be considered side characters in season 8, there will be some episodes dedicated to them regardless.

Whatever the future holds for Starlight remains to be seen.

Like I said, just a Pinkie/Fluttershy episode is all that's left for me in Season 9. Outside of that, there's still more than HALF that season, but I'm sure the rest of the Mane Six don't need it, which means Starlight's wide open.

I see Starlight as an important character. If the writers didn't want to give her as much screen time as she's getting, they wouldn't have. Simple as that. Anyways, I don't really see this as an issue. If every episode was a Starlight Glimmer episode, then maybe, but that's not the case here..

I'm at the point where I understand people's issues with Starlight, but I also seem to perk up when I know an episode will be about her instead of the mane cast. She's led to countless discussions that have made me friends and helped me get to know many other people.

I honestly had no idea there was such hate for Starlight Glimmer. Like, why is this a thing? I've enjoyed a bit of the run-ins she's had. It took her a while to grow on me but now that she's here, I really could care less what they decided to do with her. Whether she becomes a main character, or not. She's still there and getting screen-time. I mean... .people are just never going to be satisfied, are they?

Even with our differing opinions on Fluttershy, I have to agree with you on this about Starlight. I see her as a person learning to become a better pony like any human being should learn to do.

I actually see Starlight Glimmer becoming more if they'd let her. Now, I'm not going to throw a fit if they don't, but you get the idea. She has a lot of potential. She's a character that has a great background, she's intelligent, and talented. I really think she'd be able to take on in Twilight's hoof-prints rather well. And her personality is just different enough where the way she would deal with things is quite fresh, and not a Twilight Copycat. A part of me does hope they'll do more with her, but who knows. Season 8 is around the corner, and we can only imagine what's going to happen.
