That's weird, I think it has to do with the JavaScript pop-up login thing.

I had to go on the default version for it to work.

well you should always backup your data, no matter what you do with your computer.

 

i don't think it would erase data, but i would seriously consider a backup of your important data

for safety. you never know what can go wrong.

 

fixparts is only supposed to fix mbr and partition table problems, it shouldn't actually erase any data.

 

but backing up first then doing it would be the safer choice.

 

whatever you think is the right choice.

 

 

Ok, I've go the enclosure (it's actually quite nice, StarTech InfoSafe) and put my 500 gb hdd in there. I need to reformat it, since there is a lot of useless junk on it. Right now, I'm trying to put the stuff i want to save from the hard drive ON my computer, then i will clear it out and back every thing onto it. Then, I will go through with fixing the partitions and finally getting rid of windows on my computer (i'm sorry windows 7 users, it just isn't cut out for me, since I am best with linux!).

Ok. Windows is gone! My Hdd has more space, My pony stuff is fine, and now I have an extra 500 gb when i need it thanks to my enclosure!

 

Some parting questions with this topic, though

 

in order for the whole thing to work, I had to use parted magic instead of my normal linux mint. Any thoughts?

 

Also, There are a bunch of random looking partitions I think windows made, but I'm not sure... Should I delete them?

 

 

 

 

 

And how do you make the swap (or lengthen it)?

I've been thinking of switching to Ubuntu, but there's a problem, my processor doesn't support PAE (Physical Address Extension), and the current Ubuntu only has a PAE kernel. There happened to be an unofficial version of it with a non-PAE kernel, which I'm using right now, but it has quite a few problems, and its a bit frustrating to use.

Yeah, after a bit more looking I figured out that OpenSUSE supports a generic kernel too, but I ended up going with Lubuntu, I like the Ubuntu distros, but plain old Ubuntu was giving me problems.

 

So far, Lubuntu has been pretty good, and its very lightweight and fast. And it feels good to be away from Windows. Now I just need to get more software.

Then you need to right click on the unallocated space you want to use and make a new partiton,

then you need to format as linux-swap:

I formatted the backup harddrive to FAT, but it seems to have problems holding certain files with certain characters in the name in file name. For some reason. it will just say it is a improper file type or something. Should I change the file system to ext3, since that is what the my computer has and it has no problems with these files?

 

 

Edit: never mind, I think I fixed it. It was my USB hub (that makes sense, right?)

Awesome! I didn't expect to find one of these here! I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, and it's possibly the best thing to ever happen to me! I LOVE this operating system! I couldn't stop after Ubuntu, though. I downloaded VirtualBox and got Fedora as well. After toying around with them, I'd decided to get the OS trinity on one computer. I now have Windows 95, Mac OS 6, and Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot on one computer, including a few others like Fedora and MS-DOS.

hmm, could you run this command for me, and post its output.

xrandr

lets see what the max resolution the system is reading in, then we can try adding

a extra one.
