Dealing with Parasprites

I've been server admin in a sourcemod for about 4 months now, and out of that experience, I figured the best way to counter the buggers is simply adapting to the situation.

 

Examples (All real, and happened at least once):

 

Problem: Guy gets in the server and begins micspamming "Trololololol".

Solution: 2 warnings. 1st: "alright, mate, cut it out already". 2nd: mute.

Problem: The guy rejoins the server to go past the mute.

Solution: 1 hour ban.

Problem: Trolling/Hate talk

Solution: Use that against him, rather than using admin commands. If encountering a racist, for instance, use the Human rights and real historical facts to shut him up. Only gag/mute if necessary. In that server, calling somebody a n***** is not necessarily an offence.

Now here's an issue I only faced once, and I hope I never have to face it again_

 

Problem: My clan was holding a public Line Battle event in our server. A guy joined and began spamming music into the server. As usual, warning, no response, mute.

He then rejoins the server and keeps up his spam. We eventually banned him. What happened next was unexpected: DDoS attack. Our server had to be shut down.

 

Solution: Unfortunately, we were forced to take extreme measures here. One of the lads sent in a counter DDoS at the bastard. Over 100 IPs from Pennsylvania got the DDoS we sent. After about an hour, we managed to reduce that list to about 10-20 IPs. Now we have the guy tagged and in our sights. We got ourselves a new DDoS protection system and better admin strategy.

I have the one simple solution to avoid trolls!

Honestly, all you have to do is ignore them. The fuinny thing is, it seems so old and it seems as if it is a technique that fails more often than not, but believe me, it does work. If you don't really know how to handle a troll, then just ignore them. After they make fun of you some, they will get bored and move on.

 

A technique that I like to use is show them how they are not getting to you. Show them that they are getting no result out of you in a negative way. Have fun with the troll, because messing with them can sometimes be pretty entertaining. Be super extra friendly to them, it will really surprise them.

 

In the end, do not give them the end result they are seeking. Do not show them that they are getting to you, even if they are.
