gaming Music you think games don't use enough of

I am a metalhead so obviously I think games need to use more of it but not a lot of them do these days. Everything is orchestral or ambience but I don't see a whole lot of metal these days and it makes me sad.

What about you?

Well, coming to my mind right now, I think I recall that the only games that have such music are games with IRL band soundtracks, such as some sports games, and obviously, music games like Rock Band and the Guitar Hero series.

If ya ask me, I think games these days need moar dubstep n stuffs.

Oh wait....that was the early 80's...lol. :P

:P I also wish games would use more official music, at least in some cases. When Godsmack's Straight Out Of Line started in the credits for Prince of Persia: Warrior Within I was floored. It was awesome.

I think we need more metal, especially for boss themes. Would especially be epic if a game's soundtrack is symphonic, and then out of nowhere, the final boss battle music is thrash metal.

But, more realistically, we need more music in the style of Rare's golden age. David Wise, Robin Beanland, Eveline Fischer and Grant Kirkhope made some of the most memorable video game music ever. Just something about the music of Rare's golden age was amazing. There was a little bit of everything.

As a personal preference I'd say swing, but it wouldn't really fit in much but apocalyptic scenarios and noire styles.

I really like what Rockstar did with Red Dead Redemption, where at some point deep in the story it plays this:

I suppose after all the build up hearing this had quite an impact.

That, and dubstep like this:

♬ Inspirations have I none, just to touch the flaming dove,

All I have is my love of love, and love is not loving ♬

There is nothing wrong with how certain games handle their music. I'm looking at this from an art perspective. Music generally has to fit the theme. It is often overlooked. But music plays an important role in how we perceive emotion, depth and immersion in a game. None of this is specifically ascribed to genre, or game style, or art style. As it helps determine the mood.

Let's go with an example. Imagine you are doing a very tricky jumping puzzle. In this case having music that has a tense vibe may add to your own sense of urgency when performing the jumping puzzle. While if you are just walking through the woods in an RPG with nothing going on, you should expect calm and soothing music.

And music genre is a complete non issue, as long as the genre can produce the right mood music, you will be fine. However some genres may be slightly unsuitable for it, considering some hallmarks of them are to for example have a high bpm or produce a signature noise which would not be very compatible with certain moods.

To be perfectly honest, I miss having signature melodies in gaming music. familiar themes that return over several levels. A lot of music easily becomes muddled. I see Halo as a nice example of try that. Although I do not see it as a necessity. Because a game like Sonic Generations has excellent music, without having a single theme, but rehashing old ones in a good way.

Maybe I'm just a newbie when it comes to gaming music, but any kind of mix between jazz, electronic and/or rock that follows a certain melody makes me feel awesome while playing. I wouldn't want to hear any of these songs while exploring normal areas in a game, though, that would just be rediculous.

I'm personally a fan of the Ace Combat soundtrack. Whenever I put this on while playing any game, it gives me goosebumps.

Here's two of my favorites; the first one is from the latest installment (Ace Combat Assault Horizon) and the second one is from Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, which is already a bit older.
