Moon Dancer not having been a villain was a missed opportunity.

Moon Dancer as everyone likely knows by now was a mare that was friends with Twilight as a filly. In the series premiere she invited Twilight to a party but Twilight rejected to go on her mission. So moon became an anti-social recluse.

She shows up in season 5. Now upon further thinking i think she could have been an interesting villain, holding a grudge against Twilight for missing her party and thinks it's crazy to call her the princess of friendship.

I'm glad she wasn't. Season 5 already has a fairly similar villain to that idea in Starlight Glimmer, repeating with a similar-ish villain in the same season would be weird. Not to mention it would ruin "Amending Fences" which is one of the best episodes of the show and Moondancer is a large part of that reason. Taking her and just turning her into another villain wouldn't be half as good as what we got, not every character who has a reason to dislike our heroes or has something traumatic happen to them needs to be a villain.

At this point I think the series as a whole has enough so-called villains and especially secondary antagonists that having Moondancer as one would be over-doing it; especially since she was a more down-to-earth version of Starlight and Tempest in regards to dealing with their long-held grudge, if you will. Part of the magic of "Amending Fences" was Moondancer holding a grudge, but not going TOO overboard with it; which allowed Twilght to eventually break down wall.

In the end, I believe that if Moondancer was a villain, she would be lost in the shuffle with other atagonists.

I have to concur with @BastementSparkle and @PathfinderCS. Amending Fences is one of the best episodes of the entire series, and part of the reason why is how relatable and realistic Moondancer was and Twilight’s pursuit for forgiveness. Turning her evil would make her no different than SG and ruin its uniqueness.

Gals like Moondancer, Nanachi, and Yunyun grant me strength to smite the woobie vermin! If you have a tragic past and you have sinned, your ass better belong to the fanboys cause your soul belongs to the underworld.

She already was borderline creepy stalker when Twilight reunited with her in the Canterlot. Personally I am really glad that she didn't went full on yandere on Twilight.

Same here.

Making both sides relatable and understandable is much better than making a villian who pointlessly holds a grudge.

Yeah guys. Besides, the other Twilight foils: namely Trix, Sunny, Starlight, and best edgy horse, already served villainous roles

Who's the best edgy pony? Oh wait, Tempest, right?

It would require redoing Moon Dancer to have a better reason to be a villain besides just being brushed off by Twilight. Maybe if Moon Dancer was also jealous that Twilight got to be Celestia's special student and was being Twilight's friend to gain favor with Celestia to accept her as a student also. Having Twilight brush her off and leave would throw it all into disarray for Moon Dancer.

It would have been a better version of Starlight, and of course Starlight wouldn't have existed if so. (but not necessary a better Moondancer) Let's say Moondancer replaced Starlight.

  1. The Cutie Re-Mark Starlight's departure from Sunburst doesn't have the worthy weight of what makes a good villain story. Let's face it, it was weak. Twilight and Moondancer's conflict feels more serious and sincere, personal. It is basically a same story, but how it's shown and the weight is totally different. It's not some random guy showing up with three seconds of context, it's about someone who we care of. But of course, it is still an overkill to end the world or enslave the whole village over friendship. It would be better if it was adjusted towards making more sense.
  2. The Cutie Re-Mark : Twilight being the reason for Moondancer being a villain kinda makes it more appropriate for Twilight forgiving Moondancer's villainy and talking her through, offering her friendship. She is Twilight's mirror image and her past mistake (and it matches the theme of time travel). It makes her a worthy opponent, also makes more sense that Moondancer can be more powerful than Twilight. It would be a good character growth both for Twilight and Moondancer, and a better redemption story.
  3. Throughout Season 6-7 : Twilight and Moondancer's developing relationship would have felt more natural and their chemistry would be more dynamic. Moondancer would feel less underdeveloped than Starlight because she has a real history. She would be basically Twilight's evil twin sister, and it would be fun to watch them interacting.
  4. No Second Prances : Instead of Starlight, it could have been Twilight who had to choose between her friend and her duties. And also, if Moondancer and Trixie became friends, it is more believable that Twilight feels extra jealous and extra protective towards Moondancer.
  5. Throughout Season 6-7 : She would have felt more worthy of being the Mane Seven, because she isn't someone cometely new, she was already Twilight's friend from a long time ago. Not saying that new friends are impossible to step in, but Moondancer feels more like a fully fledged living breathing character.
