Twilight's reasoning for having Rainbow Dash coach Cheerleading.

Let's be honest. I know a number of people didn't like "2, 4, 6, Great", Mainly for Rainbow Dash's attitude towards cheerleading. But somehow I think this whole thing could have been avoided had it not been for Twilight. Twilight was the one who insisted that RD coach the cheerleading team. Personally I think Pinkie Pie would have been a better candidate for cheerleading coach. What was going through Twilight's mind when she made this decision? And I'm sure this isn't the first time Twilight has made bad or at least questionable decisions.

Do you think Twilight knew what she was doing? Did she make a wrong decision having RD coach cheerleading? Was there a good reason for her to do so?

I think so, yes. Then again, I get really annoyed is someone asks me to do something I am not good at (but looks vaguely similar to what I am good at) and expects good results. However, if I was in Rainbow's place, I would just have told Twilight "no" instead of accepting the task and then not doing it.

Not only being good at something does not automatically make you a good teacher (teaching is a skill like any other), but playing sports and cheerleading are very different activities - you do not ask a basketball player to teach cheerleading, right?

For example  "oh, you can configure a web server? Awesome, could you build me a web site that's basically a copy of eBay?" I am not a web developer or designer, even if I tried to do what you ask, I would either fail completely or make something that barely works and is unmaintainable, all while spending much more time than a real web developer would.

She could have been trying to pull a Celestia and make Rainbow Dash get out of her comfort zone, hoping she’d put her attitude aside and rise to the occasion.

That sounds like a douche move for Twilight to do. What if kids IRL start doing it? It creates a bad leader. That's bad leader move for Twilight.

Why is pushing someone to do step outside their wheelhouse a bad thing? A lot of people are perfectly happy to just stagnate. Try something new once in a while. Expand your horizons.

I do think it was a bad thing for Celestia to, for example, get Twilight out of the library to make some friends.

Twilight was just being an asshole, and the writers thinking they were really clever with that decision

It could have been more acceptable if Twilight wasn't so smug about it in the end. It really felt she had manipulated Rainbow Dash.

What a rude thing to say about the writers!

Honestly, with the way you say that, you make it sound like Kids will ALWAYS imitate what they see on TV, when really, there are kids who are smart enough to know when it's okay or not to do something like that. Everyone is different and anyone regardless of age should be able to see one poorly handled episode such as this one so that they can discover that not every good lesson is going to be directly handed to you on a silver platter flawlessly.

The world isn't perfect and episodes like Fame and Misfortune for example help us learn that despite the negativity of the fan dumb, it's worth doing your art so that the fans that truly appreciate your art (like those 2 little fillies that were having some bumps in their friendship) can learn from your experiences and art.

When they constantly make moves they damn well know people hate, it starts to test my patience with this damn show

Because if it fails (and there is high risk of failure), it fails really badly and makes the "pushed" person feel guilty that they were not able to do it, probably making then never try again.

Do it if it others do not depend on it.

If Rainbow failed to get the students to perform, she would feel responsible for the loss of the game etc, except that in such case Twilight would have been at fault.

Celestia sending Twilight to Ponyville was even worse - It was sheer luck that Twilight made friends with anyone (she didn't really try) and especially that the ponies she somehow made friends with represented the Elements. For example - if she did not have Spike with her, she would not have talked with Fluttershy.

And that is ignoring other risks associated with this - for example Twilight could have got sick from eating too much or eating some bad food and be unable to go to the Everfree forest.

Why would Twilight, the Princess of Friendship, force Rainbow Dash at the SCHOOL of FRIENDSHIP to something clearly didn't wanna do? It wasn't even important! At least Twilight moving to Ponyville to make friends was something that had to be done for the fate of Equestria! Rainbow Dash coaching the cheer squad isn't training Rainbow for the safety of Equestria!

That is what frustrates me the most. A friend doesn't manipulate another friend like that. If Twilight believed RD leading the cheer squad would be a good thing for her and because her enthusiasm would be exactly what the cheer squad needed she should have been honest about that.

Issues with Rainbow's character portrayal aside (I've said enough about that in the past), Twilight put RD and the students through an unnecessary situation that could have ended with the cheer squad breaking up.

Look at the end result, as Rainbow Dash helped make the cheerleading team awesome. That's what I think is one of the main reasons Twilight chose Rainbow, because she knew Rainbow would put awesomeness into the cheerleading team. Another reason is because Fluttershy and Pinkie are phenomenal at buckball and needed to coach the buckball team, so that eliminated those two from the potential cheerleader coaches. Rarity was busy with the outfits which also disqualified her, and she probably would have made the cheerleading team too aesthetic oriented if she was the coach. AJ was open, but she probably would have made the cheerleading team too practical. Twilight herself could have done it, but I think she was too busy with administrative duties and wouldn't have made the cheerleading team as awesome as Rainbow Dash did anyways. Ultimately, I think Twilight choose RD because she was hoping Rainbow would put her energy and awesomeness into the cheerleading team, which is why the end result was an awesome and successful cheerleading performance. Therefore, I think Twilight knew what she was doing when she made this decision, and I also think that this was a right decision.

Also, I don't even see anything wrong with Rainbow's attitude towards cheerleading, it makes sense to me - Rainbow loves acting cool and awesome, cheerleading seems too girly for her. She also loves buckball, so that made coaching cheerleaders even more unappealing because Rainbow really wanted to do something else (she initially brought a whole bunch of training gear before she was told of her role because she was wanting and expecting to be a buckball coach). In conclusion, I see Rainbow's attitude towards cheerleading as reasonable.

This isn't the first time Twilight has played mind games with Rainbow Dash. I remember two other times from Rainbow Falls with something like guilt tripping and The End in Friend where they were tricked.

If there was one more Season, this was something that needed to blow up in Twilight's face and learn a lesson.

I guess this would place Twilight Sparkle under the trope of Chessmaster for those episodes.
