Why do the unicorns, earth ponies and pegasi need to be together?

the other one is the name I gave to the son of Big Mac and Sugar Belle who appeared in the finale, and Sugar Belle is an unicorn

"Why do the unicorns, earth ponies, and pegasi need to be together?" - The pony races need to be together for numerous reasons. Firstly, Equestria could be attacked and with the pony races divided and hostile towards each other, defeating them would be much easier than if they were united. Secondly, a society functions more efficiently when it consists of unity, not division. Thirdly, when the pony races are hostile towards one another, the disunity results in chaos and far more negative things such as wars and even deaths that could have been prevented if there was unity.

"What was the conflict in the movie?" - The conflict in the movie was racism. The reason why everything was perfectly fine yet there was conflict was because somewhere in the past racism developed between the pony races and hostility towards different races grew.

"Why do they need magic?" - The ponies do not necessarily need magic. Throughout the movie Sunny's goal was to reunite the pony races by bringing back their magic. However, in the end, she came to the realization that she didn't need to bring back their magic to reunite them. She told them that they could still be friends even without magic.

The unicorn traps worked because unicorns were the same as Earth ponies. A unicorn with magic could probably just push the release button with TK.

 

Also, it appears that the Earth ponies lived in constant fear. This causes stress and stress is not healthy. Also, what would have happened to Izzy if Sunny was not there?

 

A hypothetical: if someone poked one of your eyes out when you were a baby, you would still be able to live a normal life, just with one eye. Does that mean that you don't need the second one or that your life would not improve if you somehow got your eye back later?

 

Seeing that pegasus ponies looked up to the royals because of their ability to fly, I'd say now that they all can fly, their lives have improved.

 

Now I get it - your problem is that the movie did not explain the need for magic well enough, instead of relying on magic=good, friendship=good assumptions. I actually agree a bit. I think earth ponies (constant fear) and unicorns (if it's not depression then something else, probably because they evolved to use magic and now are without it, similar to how ponies behaved when Tirek stole) were shown somewhat OK, but the pegasus ponies weren't. 

 

 

For ponies wings and horns are cultural as we saw with Scootaloo feeling less like a pegasus. So they need magic in that sense. Unicorns especially.

I guess the MLP society must consist of all the pony races. Previously it was a rule within the world, that it would be destroyed if they didn't live in harmony. The new movie makes a plot without stating that "Friendship is Magic", but still tries to imply it. My biggest guess is the creators of G5 wanted a new beginning but was stuck or forced to use G4's backstory because if popular demand.

Same goes for G5. All three races are one species so it’s only natural to sooner or later overcome their conflicts to live in harmony. The movie even showed the depression of all three races from hidden to easy to notice.

 

Earth ponies: Always living in fear for the other two tribes

Pegasi: Also living in fear but having hope because of their royals. As soon as they noticed that even they can’t fly, they got even more depressed

Unicorns: Waiting for extinction. Seriously, they had no reason to exist at all with their magic being lost.

 

So in the end, it was because of Sunny who’s letter reached Izzy that leaded to the mission to bring magic back and most likely saved ponykind (especially unicorns) from extinction.
