“Latest Posts” tab in the sidebar?

(edited)

Maybe there could be a new tab in the sidebar that has all the latest posts on the forums? Like, not latest topics or created threads, I mean the latest posts on said threads. My other forum has one. I just thought it'd be quite convenient, as well as a handy way to see how fast the site moves more specifically.

EDIT: Appears I'm mistaken...the highlighted box, I think probably is for latest posted threads, not posts, but regardless, I'm suggesting the same idea as before.

An interesting idea. Like the hook in the first paragraph of a story, it could serve as a way for people to see whether or not they're interested in responding, right from the main page. Convenience is a forumer's best friend. I'd be interested in seeing it done, sure.

I'm not particularly for or against the idea. I honestly wouldn't really use it, and it would need a way to leave out rp posts and ones in character database.

I don't see why not. :)

My only concern is that the sidebar is starting to get very long, and this is going to be one more hook vying for people's attention on the index. Also, I'm not entirely sure the ordering of all the books is optimal.

Quick question, is that shiny purple box with Octavia collapsable or removable in any way?

I mean, it's nice in all, I just don't want to see it anymore...

It's not collapsible because it's an ad. I plan to remove it in a few days, though - the intent was to draw some much-needed attention to our new commissions section.

Well alright, I was just asking because if it was gone, my sidebar would be the perfect height to fit the page and not push anything down.

Thanks.

It's extremely annoying and takes up far too much space. Isn't the Recent Topics combined with a bold topic name for new replies good enough ...?

At least I can minimize it.

Can it at least be placed below Recent Status Updates? That section gets skirted by too fast already, now it will receive far less attention from being shoved so far down the screen.

hmmm, I haven't seen this box before. My Chrome ad blocker must filter it out! yay!

Dear me, the recent status updates are way down in the Tartarus Level

Other than having to scroll a bit further to read the newest status, it's quite a fine addition.

Seems a bit unnecessary, but we can minimise it if we want to.

I'd like to thank the MLP Vector Club for the images used in my avatar.

Well, you personally requested to see some ads more relevant to the community around here, so I tried to place one. Just saying.

Would certainly be nice to see something other than ADs scroll through there. News relevant to this website makes it even better.

As for positioning, I swapped status updates with recent posts and the hook minimized if you don't like it. I'm actually not entirely sure it was necessary or that it's going to be very useful, considering how many posts this place gets every minute. A number of people want it removed.

Don't really like it. It does make the sidebar longer than it needs to and I find it a bit of an eyesore. Convenience wise, its a smart idea.

I think the new posts tab on the right is completely unneeded. I'd prefer not to have it entirely.

I won't use it either, but minimizing it isn't really that difficult.

Would it ever be possible for us to arrange and personalize how our sidebar is organized? Like drag them to where we want in order from top to bottom? I for one do not like having the statuses above it, but the majority do. I have the donations, birthdays, and calender all minimized, yet it just doesn't feel right to me.

Yes, I would like to see Forum-relevant ADs. But not stuck in various places all crazy like (I haven't even seen the Octavia one, so Chrome must flag it as an AD and auto-remove it). Instead, use the area where the cute Fluttershy is for a scrolling banner (like it was previously). That space is fairly out of the way, and most people are already used to that section being eaten up by a Donation AD.

As an example; you mentioned elsewhere that the Commission section needs attention ... well, why isn't that displayed as part of the scrolling banner? If this forum ever starts to delve into original content creation (like mentioned elsewhere, ex. YouTube), then that would also be a perfect place.

As for that Recent Post hook ... personally, I find it to be terrible. The site gets so many posts per hour, that the rate at which it scrolls is just not helpful. The feature takes up space and adds little (if any) actual benefit.

Although I do thank you for moving it to the bottom. At least there I can ignore it, so that it doesn't bother me and people who like it can continue on enjoying it.

One thing I've thought of ages ago was having the interface slightly customizable via user settings. For example, being able to move in what positions those side bars (New Posts, New Topics, Recent Status Updates, etc) appear, which ones to make visible (not just minimized / maximized), and perhaps even more themes, skins, and banner options. This would make the forum-ing experience for each person far more comfortable.

As for the actuality of this idea, I doubt that the IP.Board can do that ... and if so, that the hook(s) needed would have to be created ... quite the task.

But I can dream, right?
