I love sim city. I grew up on those games. Played sim city 4 for years. Sadly it won't work on my new computer... :(

But I have found a new game that continues the spirit of sim city in an epic fashion.

Cities XL 2012 B)

Here's a few shots of my main city. It's called Cerus, and so far is about a half a million in population.

As you can see, Cities XL continues the excellent tradition of sim city 4 in allowing a day/night cycle.

Also, you can build multiple cities and have them trade with each other, also in sim city 4 style. In fact, in Cities XL trade is almost essential, as otherwise you won't have the resources needed to grow a city much bigger than half a million.

I highly recommend it. In fact I think I saw it on sale as part of the steam summer sale going on. Dunno if it still is or not, but it would be a great deal if it is. ;)

I've played cities xl and I thought it wasn't that good, if you are extremely good at Simcity and download mods and stuff, you would understand, comparing it to every single aspect of simcity it would be a complete bummer. One of the bigger area's it fails to fall under is building the city, reason for this is that you could have a city full of skyscrapers and little to no medium and low rise buildings and it's much easier to upkeep the wealthy then you think it is, you said 500,000 population with no resources and I happen to hit 2 million once without resources and there are cities out there with 12 million and no resources. Another area is modding itself, modding is ridiculous to try to do in this game and that's why there isn't many mods for it. Another area is the buildings, There's no construction and the variety is very small in the high density area. Another area is that there is a memory leak in the game, you lag a ridiculous amount after playing the game for a short while. And there are still more I would like to add, but what ever, I just pulled out the ones I've felt that they should fix.

I've never experienced memory lag that I've noticed. But that may be because I'm using a computer with enough extra to absorb the problem without me noticing...

As to the other things you address, of course you can have a city full of skyscrapers with few if any smaller buildings. Ever heard of New York? Or Tokyo? Many of the world's greatest cities are exactly that way, and the game accurately reflects that. You build your supporting buildings in other cities and get rid of what's not needed as you build your main city, and soon enough you don't have anything small left over. That's not something to complain about, that's how city growth works.

Then you claim that I said it's hard to upkeep the wealthy. I never said that. In fact I like the differences Cities XL makes in various income classes among your citizens. It's very realistic and something sim city never realized. In real life you're going to have widely varied neighborhoods depending on citizen wealth. You don't see that in sim city, but here in Cities XL it's pretty obvious when you go from the unskilled worker neighborhood to the wealthy executives.

You say no construction. Obviously that's wrong. Did you never try to build a monument? Those things take forever to go up.

Finally you completely ignored the issue of graphics and how ridiculously awesome Cities XL looks with such great detail. Crank up the graphics to ultra and zoom in and watch the people walk around doing their stuff. It's quite amazing really. B)

One thing I'll admit I do miss, and I wish Cities XL had this, was the U-drive-it missions of sim city 4. Being able to grab a vehicle and drive around my own city was a favorite past time, and a great way to earn some quick cash. I especially enjoyed the military missions, smuggling a tank out of the city and all that. Ah well...

I have a copy of cities XL right in front of me and I can prove that there's no construction and if you think monuments should only have construction then that's silly, I never said that you said that it was hard to upkeep the wealthy, I said it's easier then you think, I made all my cities skyscraper cities and I could upkeep them all no problems. I have max graphics on and I wasn't impressed at all, I did build a monument before and took me 10 minutes. You're trying really hard to make it sound near perfect, but I can tell you that it's worse then simcity 4 and far from perfect, I played simcity for 5 years and cities XL for 1 month and going to tell me that I don't know what I'm saying.

My favorite game! (well one of them), sadly, I had really bad problems with it (performance problems, crashing, not having deluxe) I was able to get a city to have 300,000 living there before it crashed sadly, forever.

It's been a while since I've played SimCity 4 (no less because I can't find my installation code). How long did it take you to get all those tall buildings? Better yet, how in the name of Will Wright are you supposed to? The land value dynamics confused me to no end. I figure it's not like SC3KU where a bunch of parks and high commerical demand would do the trick...

I love SC4. I just am a terrible city planner LOL. For example, no matter how I zone I'd get no development in a few game years. :P

I feel like this'll become a Micro-Simtropolis if we continue on with this kind of stuff (SC4 vs CXL, SC5 stuff), so if there should ever be a SC4 thread, it's best to have it SC4 and SC4 only. If you wanna talk SC5 or CXL, make a thread for that. For the record, there is a site completely devoted to city simulation games, just so that you're aware of it, so whatever you have to say about SC4 or CXL or whatever, it's there already.

Having that said,... SC4 was one of those things that came to me by accident when I was browsing through PC games. After a bit of playthrough, I went to Youtube to look stuff up... Then I found the Network Addon Mod. Then I became a developer of the same exact mod. Unfortunately, I've become so immersed in the modding aspect that I almost have no knowledge in the gameplay aspect.

Is that the RHW I spy in the background? You know, I've always wanted to do this: Rub this in the face of other fellow ponies...

Did I mention that I'm a well-known Simtropolite on Simtropolis? (Hint hint...)

I'm Simcity4Deluxe from Simtropolis, some people may remember me some may not, I remember doing a 4 leaf clover interchange with RHW, it's just very squarish like

I've always wanted to get into the game, but I've just never been able to keep a city going to the point of getting all of those big skyscrapers.

So typically I just enjoyed creating tornadoes and destruction instead. =P

You've clearly never heard of Simtropolis then... There's an entire community willing to reveal the secrets to hyperscale construction to you... Maybe Haljackian-scale/GTR-level construction. If anything, they'd say something about demand or something about the CAM... Unless you prefer vanilla...

The only thing making it so much like a box is that you shrink-wrapped your MIS network ramps far too much. Try a little more diagonal in your setup.

Managed to find this: The only remnant of a really good city I had before a hard drive failure made me lose it.

I clearly didn't know much about transportation infrastructure...

That was with RHW 4, that was way back when I was trying to make the most craziest interchanges out there and to see if they would work.

I've actually never played SC4, but I've put in hundreds of hours on SC3000, both the original and the unlimited version. I've got some pretty (If I do say so myself) badass cities from years back, still on one of my hard drives. I'll have to see if I can't find that thing somewhere and hook it up, take some screenies. :P

well that's one way to start.....

When I reinstalled, i apparently saved all my old region data,  so trying to layer it with a nice coat of "mega city".   There's some potential, but the largest city is a real selfish arse when it comes to giving out RCI demand.
