False Perception 482 August 2, 2012 Share August 2, 2012 Our town used to be called Lickskillet, and we tore down two indian mounds last year. We have a population of 21,221. Not really too much, other than ~4000 person growth. Swoop said: If something does happen to go horribly wrong, please, blame Zoop. Frenzyhero: Lurking extraordinaire, brony impersonator. Nanniro 39 August 2, 2012 Share August 2, 2012 (edited) I live in Gulfport, MS. A place only known for it's seafood, casinos, and what little music came from here. We're also known for Hurricane Katrina! The worst hurricane to hit the US in modern history. The closest major city is New Orleans, LA. That sprawling place has a rich history and culture, but since the hurricane, it hasn't fully recovered and likely never will. It has the highest murder/manslaughter rate per 100,000 people for 2010, even though it only has a population of approx. 350,000. It's not that city itself is bad, but it's been handed some tough challenges by nature and politicians. It's still a very strong city, though! Very few southern cities share the glory, history, and culture of New Orleans. A real gem of a city. Edited August 2, 2012 by Nanniro I mean, if that's okay with you... LOOK IT UP! *In stereotypical Jersey accent* Those New Yorkas always come down to Nj an clog up alla our beaches. Whadda they think theyre doin, ah? I never understood the whole NJ vs NY debate. (Carmel if anyone wants to know is my town's name). It was originally called Bethlehem in the 1800's but there was already a Bethlehem, Indiana, so they re-named it to Carmel. Magicon 468 August 2, 2012 Share August 2, 2012 (edited) Closest city is Hartford, Connecticut about half-an-hour away. It's known as the Insurance Capital of the World because so many insurance companies are located here. Mark Twain lived in the city and most of his famous novels (including Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Connecticut Yankee) were written there. We also boast the oldest art museum in the US, the Wadsworth Atheneum. The oldest continuously publishing newspaper in the US, the Hartford Courant, has been printing newspapers since 1764. spas-ticShotty 3,584 August 3, 2012 Share August 3, 2012 -Charlotte is the 2nd largest banking city in the United States, behind New York City -It is also called the "Queen City" because it was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg back from the 1700's. -The county that Charlotte sits in is also called Mecklenburg County, which again reflects our origin of name. -Supposedly, the skyscrapers in Charlotte are supposed to have roofs which are shaped either vaguely or very similiarly to crowns. The Bank of America Headquarters is a good example. -Speaking of BoA, there corporate headquarters are based in Charlotte -Most NASCAR teams are based in Charlotte -The NASCAR Hall of Fame is also in Uptown Charlotte -US Airways operates it's largest hub at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. Seriously, literally 95% of the planes at this airport are US Airways owned. It's quite hypnotizing to see that many jets of the same airline. You will probably see some Delta, jetBlue, American Airlines jets time to time, but compared to the US Airways jets that litter this airport, they're in the 1% minority
Marshmallow 1,137 August 4, 2012 Share August 4, 2012 -Quebec City is the oldest city in Canada (founded in 1608) -It is the capital of the province of Quebec. -95% of the residents in Quebec City speak French as their mother tongue. (that includes me) -Quebec City was capital of Canada from 1859 to 1865 -The Chateau Frontenac in Quebec city is the most photographed hotel in the world. -Montmorency Falls, which are just outside of Quebec City, is 100 feet taller than Niagara Falls. -The thinnest house in North America, at only 12 feet (3.7 meters) long, is located on Rue Donnaconna in Quebec City -Old Quebec City was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. 2 "There was me, that is Pinkie, and my three droogs, that is Rarity, Rainbow, and Fluttershy, and we sat in the Ponyville Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening."
