The evilest of evil things.

What things do you avoid by procrastinating? I have an exam in 3 hours, and I've been playing TF2 all morning, and reading pones.

Homework due today? Do today.

Three weeks given to finish a project? Do everything the night before.

Presentation/speech for class? Fuck it, we'll do it live.

I doubt anyone procrastinates more than me. Hell, I've even neglected my 2 ask threads, even though it would only take me 2 minutes each to reply.

I have a book report due at the beginning of the school year and I haven't even started reading my book. School starts in about 12 days. And here I am watching Doctor Who and scrolling through this forum....well worth it.

Ah, the beautiful art of procrastination, easy to pick but hard to master. Of course, I could finish some of those art lessons or continue with those Japanese language exercises I have but it's so much more fun to procrastinate.

In my freshman year I procrastinated on everything. Whether or not I passed and became a soph, or I was put out rode on if I passed by turning in some old homework...

By fuck I found a loophole and called them out on it. I passed without doing the work. I had my cake and ate it too.

Which is why I'm @@Whiteshade's attorney.

Simple solution. You like Doctor Who. The Doctor is a time traveler. You have a book report due in twelve days. Read H.G. Wells "The Time Machine". It's a very short book!

I would do that, but it isn't on the book list. I get to read about how to get ready for freshman year of college. :'(

Oh shoot! Sorry to hear that! I always hated being assigned reading material. I much prefer to pick what I want to read, when I want to read it.

Same. They say "You get to pick whatever book you want to read. We are not assigning them to you." And then we get a list of 3 books that we can read from. It has to be one of those 3. One was twilight (Tried reading. Hated it) The other was Catcher in the Rye (Read it and Hated it) so I was left with stupid college. I haven't even started reading it yet.

Just whip up a quick report on "Catcher" then if you remember enough details on it. If not, skim it and then write something! I never read any of the Twilight books. I saw the first movie and thought it rather dumb. The only Twilight I accept is Twilight Sparkle (oh, and that quiet time right around sunset)

Picture related...Kinda!

We can't do books we've already read. I had to read it for another literature class and it's on record. I hate my school. I really do.

Aw nuts! Sorry Songbrony. Just take comfort in that it sounds like a book Twilight would want to read!

In short, a good friend once told me something wise, something they had heard, "you can't pay the bills with checks in the mail." It was a long, deep conversation, something I really needed. I was having a hard time, they told me a few new mottoes that I am trying to live by and that is one of them. I am a severe procrastinator and so are they, they said that quote was the best advice they have ever given... Even though in this day I don't fully understand it, I believe them, they said I would get it when the time was right...

Procrastination is one of the hardest obstacles to overcome for many of us... The internet is a tool of great capability, to both entertain and more importantly educate. Many of us, however, including myself, choose entertainment most of the time. Sure, apps like StayFocused help, but people in real life are very distracting too. Why do something important when you can do something fun? When you hear it as it really is, it sounds absolutely idiotic. As you near your date you tell yourself "I'll work harder later," I know because that is literally what I am doing this very instant.

There isn't much you can do to fight it, it's like laziness, you just have to... do it. It's not something you can really teach, there are preventative measures like the motto, but in the end you just have to learn to fight it... That doesn't mean one day you get to stop or get great at it, you have to keep fighting it. Just like any disorder. I have to take CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) but if I stop for a while I become bitter. Just like that you have to keep practicing the motto's and you have to keep doing it. It's a life long trial for many.

Currently, for example, I need to read bullfinches mythology, 900 pages of book. I have to take notes, too. I have less than three weeks and I was sating "50 pages a day" now it's "100" and if I don't get my but up and do it, stop making up reasons, it will be "200," and that's just stressful. I'm listening to music to keep me happy, and I just took my CBT class yesterday, nonetheless I have yet to begin. Much like apathy you have to learn it. Your experiences, yourself, have to essentially program that into your standard thoughts. Some people pick apart what others say, while I am oblivious. I'm not very social while many people are. In the end if you want to change problems like procrastination you literally have to go against your instinct and make yourself something you weren't.

By that same note I have accidentally programmed aggression into my debating, listening to some youtubers and debating with certain people essentially programmed me to become aggressive and passionate, to fight tooth and nail for what I believe in. Sometimes that me comes out when I don't want it to. In the same way I accidentally programmed that into myself I have to essentially "uninstall" it. To do so I have to go against my new nature, and to do that I have to not fight when it is the one thing I want most. It's like an addiction. To beat procrastination you have to become addicted to punctuality in a sense. Of course this is all one big jumbled set of poor analogies, so maybe it doesn't make sense. If it does, hurrah.

Procrastination. I do it a lot.

Homework, I'll do you once my moms finds out I haven't.

Project due during the summer. I'll do you the last day.

Finish anything I start. Eventually, the ponies are calling.

In short, I do my homework last minute, projects last minute, and finish what I start when I get insanely bored. That's right I procrastinate on what I'm using to procrastinate.

  • 6 months later...

They should make a pill for it :/

But as for now, I just remind myself that if I sit and delay my school work, I delay my process of getting my high school diploma and have to stick another year in the crappy educational system. It usually works.
