Needs a new backpack...

I broke my backpack (that I've had for more than ten years) a little before the Holiday Break. The right strap snapped at the base, and is no longer attached. I carried it with only one strap until the break, and decided I could wait until school started back up again to find one. For me, school starts tomorrow.

I've been looking around, but man... There are about a million-billion choices for school backpacks... And most of them suck.

I need a new backpack, I'm taking a lot of college classes this semester; not having one is not an option. I'm looking for an effective student backpack that costs what it is worth. And hopefully, one that will last some time. Those one-pocket backpacks are really useless on a college campus. I have my reasons for this, but I find the wheeled backpacks are just dumb (no offense to people who use them, but really; I do not like the product very much. Different strokes I suppose.)

I picked up a Pull&Go folio for my 3DS a couple of whiles ago--it consists of a large case, with a smaller case you can remove. Hence: "Pull&Go"--The removed case measures about 6''x3.5''x2''. And figured I may as well use it. I've been wanting to bring my 3DS to school for a long time and get tons of StreetPass Hits, but never had a protective case for it. Now that I do, I want to put it in my backpack; and carry it around with me. So any backpack I get would need to have some pocket that is big enough to hold the 6''x3.5''x2'' case; but also a safe pocket, one that I can easily notice if someone tries to open it.

I'm not too picky on color. Of course I'd always prefer black, or a deep blue; but that really isn't nearly as important as finding the backpack itself. Although, my school doesn't allow outrageous designs (so no going overboard with skulls, or blood.)

I'm sure we all know a pony backpack would be 20% cooler than anything else, but they are not too readily available (and honestly, they are for kids...in preschool and Kindergarten. There is nowhere near enough space for even one of my textbooks. I keep forgetting MLP is a kids' show.) I need one I can swing down to the local Wal-Mart, Target, or JCPenny for tomorrow's school day. Saver's, and D.I. (a store like Good-Will) are options, but the selection and availability varies based upon many things.

I need a simple and effective backpack that can hold my textbooks, binder, and notebook (a "Student Backpack.") It also needs a pocket (preferably separate from the educational pockets, but not a necessity) that can hold a 6''x3.5''x2'' 3DS case. The price can't be too insane, but it needs to cost what it's worth; I'm not going to be "paying for a brand" especially one that will break down after a week of abuse. I don't care about color too much, as long as it fits my school's policy. And it needs to be easily available, without need for waiting 6-8 weeks for processing, shipping, handling, and blah blah blah. I've been Googling a lot during the break, and figured maybe I'be being a bit to picky with my restrictions (apparently, nopony wants to invent and sell a perfect backpack and monopolize the back-to-school industry. Weird...)

Then I realized ponies are the answer to everything. :D

So I'm asking you what backpacks you use, and how effective they are; and how much you like them (pictures would be nice!) Please be sure to include your brand name, price (if you don't remember, guesses are cool,) and which store you purchased it from (again, I'll still love you if you guess. :P)

But what do I know? I'm just a stupid kid.

I just use whatever piece of crap my mom buys me. Doesn't matter to me as long as it fits all the books.

Same for me, a couple years ago I went to target and got some targus backpack for like 20 or 30bux and its been fine ever since, isn’t really a huge concern of mine at the moment xD Edited by 83awsm

Well, that's quite allot of restrictions! Unfortunately, there's not too many bags that will tick all those boxes and still fall under a reasonable price range, however, the bag I've been using for past four years seems pretty similar to what you're searching for.

The bag I own is a messenger bag from a brand named Crumpler. Instead of writing up a big old wall o' text, I'll just summarise it's overall pros and cons, along with a picture or two.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Has a main compartment for all your books, a laptop or any other sizeable object.
  • Contains a whole heap of smaller pockets for stationary and such, including your 3DS case.
  • The bag's durable, waterproof, and easy to clean.
  • Closes with Velcro fasteners and clips, so people can't pinch stuff out of the bag without you noticing.
  • Comes with a lifetime warranty, and is available in the US.
  • You can order them in a whole bunch of styes and colours.
Cons:
  • Messenger bags have one strap that goes over the shoulder, which seems to be something people either love or hate.
  • The price varies on the model, the one I own would cost you around 130 USD, which may be pretty pricy for some.

Here's some pictures of the one I use:

Alternatively, they also sell regular backpacks at oddly enough a cheaper price (around 90 USD). They too come with the pockets, waterproofing and lifetime warranty. Here's some pictures of them:

I hope that helps you out a bit with your search.

I've been looking at messenger bags for a while now. I've actually been eyeing one off of amazon...not in a creepy way :D

And they are definitely something worth looking into long-term. Maybe in a couple semesters I'll pick one up. I'm just glad to know someone in real life uses them... I haven't really seen too many 'in action.' And when I do; the people I see using them are either creepy, or way-creepy. :P

But I'm going to be stopping at my local wal-mart tomorrow morning, hopefully; I'll hopefully find something that will last until then.

But what do I know? I'm just a stupid kid.

I've had this backpack (found image on EBay) for several years. I bought it at an anime con for twenty bucks. (clearance sales ROCK!) I only just started using it. It's COOL! ROD the TV is one of my all time favorite anime!
