Twilight Sparkle will have to forcefeed Celestia poison to to get her element of harmony for it only to be a fake and the whole thing being for nothing.

Then Shining Armor will kill Celestia launching her off her watch tower.

The show probably has reached its limit on how dark it can be. Already we have had ponies with mental breakdowns, cartoon violence, romance, etc. Even though its TV-Y, I can honestly say the writers seem to stretch the boundaries of how deep this cartoon can be. Although Hasbro won't approve the show stooping down to grimdark, I can tell you that. :P

From the three images I have seen so fare it looks like it is going to get dark in season 3.

Also the show has been a little dark during season 2. Like during the episode with Discord, the 3 just giving up on each other that was kinda dark. Also like everyone else said the Royal Wedding episode was pretty dark to. When Twilight was sucked into the floor by green fire and even Queen Chrysalis was pretty dark looking.

The only dark episodes to me are the first two episodes of the show and The Canterlot Wedding (because of it's horror theme) and that episode sounds good to have a sequel.

How come you found those first two episodes really dark? They seemed quite happy and upbeat for me besides the EFF.

Because of Everfree Forest and Nightmare Moon. I'm glad part 2 had a great ending to see Luna for the first time. A year later, Luna Eclipsed.

Yeah, I don't see anything here as actually "dark," aside from the changelings, which are debatable.

I see the giving-up-on-each-other thing from RtH being called dark? Er... >_>

That's sad/serious stuff, not dark. I wouldn't even call a character being injured dark, but I could go with that since if there ever is any kind of death in this show (though it occurring at all is of course highly unlikely), it will be very rare.

I mean... I think this thread is taking the idea of "dark" too lightly. lol

Though, stuff like RtH are darker than anything in, say, Ticket Mastet. But yeah. Though that reminds me... The Pinkamena stuff in Party of One, we can call that dark, and it was great, lol. Etc.

Owls Well That Ends Well got pretty dark, considering it's the closest this show has gotten to involving blood.

I don't know about anyone else, but it was the episode when I realized why this show is so different in tone compared to other shows meant for kids. Also, Twilight breaking Spike's heart and making him run away was pretty dark. At least the darkest season 1 had gotten, season 2, although changed in many ways, didn't really exceed beyond that with the exception of the season finale, premiere or Lesson Zero, unless you think a driven to insanity unicorn is darker that a dragon who frames an owl for a death.

Even though Canterlot Wedding is "dark" for a Saturday morning cartoon, Disney movies (which the target demographic of MLP watches) have gotten so much darker. G-rated Childhood favorites of kids in the past and present like Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan and Beauty and the Beast have some very scary stuff, and not to mention recent Pixar movies that include an elderly man mourning and talking to their dead wife or loved childhood toys descending into the fiery pits of the garbage incinerator, which alone caused many children to cry and run out of the theater (or at least when I saw that movie the week it opened). Trust me, MLP is "dark" in it's own right, but don't go around bragging about it or anything, because it really isn't impressive. I'm not saying that it's not deep or mature anything, but it's not the point of the show nor is it probably going to change,

I think the show needs a better villain instead of everyone else.

I thought about how it should go.

The ponies go to a cemetery for some reason and Pinkie Pie trips on a vine and knocks over a gravestone.

It then unleashes a demonic spirit and heads somewhere to possess a pony.

The demon possesses someone and then plots to have revenge on all pony's because Princess Celestia did something to the demon before he died and she trapped him in that gravestone so he won't destroy Ponyville.

Just thought about that since it's not THAT dark but it'll get lots of people to wonder what'll happen next.

Season Three NEEDS to have a better villain or it'll just be kind of boring.

This show is pushing the limits? I can think of many kids show way darker than this. Could someone please explain too me why this show is pushing it?

Well, there's no doubt there are much darker shows out there, what with Invader Zim, Adventure Time and Regular Show to name a few, but what I think is, for what this show is, a show about cute little ponies, it certainly has had some dark elements that were not expected.

Yeah, I don't see anything here as actually "dark," aside from the changelings, which are debatable.

Well, yeah, we do have to take into account what is truly considered "dark", but I would say that on the whole, when we really consider how this is a show about cute, colourful ponies, it's certainly had some darker elements compared to previous generations of MLP and other girls shows.

I think the show has just about the right amount of ocational darkness to it. However I doubt the darkness will go to anything very major like deaths of any of the charactors. Death seems like a bit to dark for a show targeted for younger kids. They may have a fight or something like they did in the return of harmony, but have it be more lasting. However I don't know how much darker the show would go depending on what you really consider dark I guess.

I don't really want it to get super dark though. I think its got a nice balance.

And the darkest part is definatly the season finale of S2.

How dark it is? in my opinion it should be TV-Y7.

How dark can it get? TV-Y7 is the Darkest it can get without Lawsuits. Maybe even TV-G. (which means no blood or not much more violence if anyone wanted that...)

How dark WILL it get? Not much darker. i doubt Hasbro is gonna accept it. The shows content probably will get a bit darker but its can't go anywhere far. The show is pushing the limits of the TV-Y rating and Hasbro aint gonna change it.

How shows like this are rated depends of the content of the show, the humor, and the target audience. And seeing some episodes the show should get a TV-Y7 rating. But Hasbro want this show to make money which means getting little girls to watch it. So having a TV-Y rating will get parents to get there kid to watch it. So the limits of TV-Y is how far the show can go. And trust me... they are gonna push it as hard as they can heheh.

I could be wrong about the four seasons and it actually is something else but it's rated G cause of scary scenes!

I think it will get a fair amount darker in Season 3, after all a show should try to please it's target demographic, and considering most of the viewers of the shows are now bronies, they should change the show to reflect that demographic.

Lauren Faust said that their will an episode where they kill off: Cheerilee,Spike,Doctor Whooves,Lyra,Trixie and DERPY HOOVES

No way would they kill off all of those characters in an episode. That would be worse than Harry Potter 7. I could theoretically see Trixie dying as a turncoat character who switched back to good after being an antagonist in a MAJOR episode as death often comes along with redemption in fiction. But if they offed Cheerilee they would lose all of their core audience. And if they offed Spike or Derpy they would be picketed by bronies. There is just no reason for a background character to expire.

Actually, I heard Trixie is getting her revenge the fun way.

Well, there was that time Discord broke loose and the invasion in the season finale. Also, ponyville is screwed next season apparently.

This I agree with. What they should be doing is making some more hardcore dark villains for the mane 6 to destroy. Which I guess...looking at Queen Chrysalis and her army, they may do.

I must say that they've done pretty awesomely in the villain aspect of things.

I would just love to see Trixie, Gilda and Blueblood be massacred brutally and terribly until they die in what could be the greatest slaughtering Television has ever seen.

That would be pretty epic but I doubt they'd be able to do it on a kids show :P However a fan could always make it and upload it to newgrounds or youtube or something

The furthest hasbro would go is probably to imprisson them in the moon for 1000 years.

They've actually done a good job showing some slightly darker material in a way that is still rather kid friendly.

I know as older folks we have tastes that can be much more realistic, but we have to keep in mind this is a kids show still and it will never get beyond a certain level of darkness.

I have proven Rainbow Dash is best pony.

The only dark moments that I remember were when Twilight gets sucked down to hell by Chrysalis and when Fluttershy breaks an innocent bear's neck... I may have exaggerated in the descriptions, but that's how I saw them.

Well, I don't think they will add darker scenes than that. I mean, it IS a kid's show after all. But there's a possibility, if they run out of ideas suddenly, who knows. I would totally approve if they added more fight scenes like the one in Canterlot Wedding Part 2, or if they had more ponies to go crazy like Pinkie and Twilight did.

But she did not brake a bear's neck, It was just a massage, But it would be pretty dark if she did but she did I fail at adding useless words.

My thoughts about the Season Three leaked landscape images (Carousel Boutique, Sweet Apple Acres, etc) are mixed. At first, it seemed that they were probably just taken from a daydream sequence, and Ponyville does not actually suffer calamity. Similar scenes of Apocalypse were seen in Apple Bloom's daydream during "Hearts and Hooves Day". But then I thought, "Where did these images come from?" All EqD said is that they were leaked; but why would Hasbro MAKE those images? They aren't concept art, being digitally drawn. And why would Hasbro keep random screenshots from its episodes? The pictures must be, I feel, pretty important to the Season Three plot line. Thus, I fear that our Ponyvillian friends are in for some trouble...
