Give a cool backstory for the batponies (Lunas guards). What are they, where have they been ect.

 

Best three get an art request (nothing overly dirty, no alicorn OC's without good backstory justifying them)

PS: There'll also be a request for anyone coming up with a better term than batponies.

Since the coming back of Luna, half of the royal guard had to go and work for her. Most Pegasi don't know this, but if they stay up in the night for a long time, their wings turn into wings that look like a bat's wings. Most of them don't mind growing them since they are usually more strong than normal wings. Luna, like Celestia, changes their coat and mane colors to match their own colors.

there Luna's most loyal subjects and got banished to the moon with Nightmare moon. While around Nightmares moon's dark power changed there form over time.

They were actually created through fusion of both pony and bat DNA. They were made and trained specifically to be Luna's personal guard during the night hours.

 

With their enhanced hearing and wings, they would be especially effective at night.

 

There are so few of them, that it is truly and honor to be one and they are very highly decorated for their skills and service.

 

I'll take a stab at a better name, how about "Batquines"? (Sounds weird and dumb but, eh, I tried)

Lets give it a shot :

 

"Nobody knows who they are , nor what they are. Everyone flees at their sole presence but nobody has ever dwelled deeper into their origins.

 

Let me tell you a little story. Those ponies, "Batponies" as they call them, they didn't come out of nowhere. They're not evil as everyone depicts them to be.

 

In fact, they were once normal Pegasi , asigned to be the royal guard for Princess Luna. As they probably taught you in History class, there was a clash between the two ruling princesses, with the banishment of Princess Luna to the moon. As it was their duty to protect their princess no matter the cost, her brave royal guard joined her in the moon. The harsh conditions up there made them transform into something else. They evolved. Due to the lack of proper "air", they didn't need their feathers, so after a couple of decades, their genes mutated into something more appropiate. The moon's darkness modified their color alleles with darker tones.

 

They became the creatures you know see. Fearless defenders of the night. Guardians of Luna...

 

As Dr. Windar , Equinologist, would say, it's the proper example of natural selection."

I'll take a shot at this.

 

A long time ago, before Luna was banished, Royal Guards worked in shifts. Night shifts, and Day shifts. Over time, because Luna was nocturnal, she befriended many of the night shift guards. The night shift guards slept during the day and worked during the night, much like Luna did. Luna was happy to have other ponies that knew how she felt when it came to the night and how lonely it could be.

 

She befriended them and eventually asked her sister if they could become her official guards. Her sister didn't see why not, after all her sister could use more company and making them unique like that would make her feel like they were significant. Celestia gave her permission, as long as the guards were alright with it.

 

Luna was delighted. She asked many of her night time friends if they would like to do the job, and most of them said yes considering it felt like a promotion from night guard to Luna's guard. Luna created the armor for them herself, including enchanting their helmets to change their appearance when they wore them. This enchantment gave them bat like wings, and sharp nighttime eyes. They also became great at moving silently when they needed to. The helmet automatically made them nocturnal and kept them awake during the night without the slightest bit of weariness. They were always on their guard.

 

From this many of them were quite happy with it. It made their job easier since they could see in darkness, and it made them undetectable by any threat with their quiet movements. The best part was that when they weren't on duty they could be their normal selves.

 

Of course when Luna was banished, that all changed.

 

The guards had their armor taken from them as well as their abilities. They were left just normal everyday royal guards. They worked normally in the night shift and there was a significant notice in failure of the night guards doing their jobs.

 

When Luna returned they were put back into use and Celestia regretted not thinking of the enchantment herself, as well as taking it away. She did not know the full power of their helmets until after Luna returned. All Celestia had known was that it changed appearance.

 

With Luna's guards the bat ponies once again back in business, Canterlot's night watches were far more successful and proved more than worthy to be the princesses official royal guards.

They are not batponies. These creatures are called 'Nightshades.' they are essentially pegasi with bat wings, but consider themselves their own unique race. The dwell in caves, where their strange eyes can see far better in the dark. They came to be when a hapless unicorn took a four bats and tried to to turn them into ponies. It didn't turn out so well, giving them a gruesome look. Over the years, this same unicorn molded and modified them, and until they had more pony attributes than bat(Though they used to be rather fuzzy and still pretty bat like, but didn't have an extreme grotesque form). From there, these beings found romance with normal ponies (Normally pegasi), and the population grew. When the rule of Celestia came around, the light of her bright sun caused them to flee into the EverFree forest, where they would not be blinded. They followed Luna closely, since she brought the night, and even assisted her when she became Nightmare Moon. Upon her banishment, they were closely watched for treason, and their stigma became "Evil." which is quite the contrary. Their appearance may be strange, but they have different personalities, just like any other pony. The Nightshades we see today are mostly pony, their pegasi roots generally hanging in strong, and keeping their bat wings. With Luna's return, many chose to serve her again, but a few began to shy away, knowing what had happened last time.

 

Their history is fairly interesting, but their diet is pretty unique. They don't eat hay or grass normally (Not much nutritional value). They eat fruit and... Changelings. That's right, because of their bat genes, the enjoy insects (Or insect like ponies...). They eat the smaller Changelings, which usually feed three or four Nightshades at a time. The few that chose to serve Luna are the only ones left in that area. The majority of the fairly moderate population left when the Changelings did-following their main food supply.

Backstory:

1000's of years ago, day and knight were not only times of day, but also kingdoms. Ponies of the day would frolic in the suns glorious light, thanking Celestia for every waking morning. While ponies of the night would live in the moons silver rays, and worship Luna and all her might.

 

Kingdoms would not only sleep during their opposite times of day, but they would also (temporarily) fade out of existence, to make room for the other kingdom to function; kept alive only by their respective princess's will.

Hardships began to fall upon the two kingdoms. Since they had no direct way to communicate, they would have to rely on their princess to spread their words onto the other princess; the princess's of course not always saying exactly what they should.

 

A civil war broke out. They would set traps for each other during their time to live, and even wage assaults on the enemy princess. After much struggle and bloodshed, the ponies of the day won. They flourished into something more than just Celestia's will, they became fully organic beings. While the losing ponies of the night were forced into the darkness of Luna's sub-conscience.

 

Luna had nothing to live for anymore, the ponies of the day would live and play in the sun, while they would waste Luna's potential by sleeping during the night. Luna slowly drifted into emptiness, she needed purpose, she needed to prove that she wasn't worthless. Summoning all her mental ability, she reached into the furthest corners of her mind and began to re-craft her night ponies into something more viscous, something not exactly pony. They became corruptions of what they once were, tools of warfare, tools in which Luna

would use to bring eternal night. And with a powerful ounce of strength, she made these ponies real.

 

After Luna's failed attempt to bring an end to day, she was banished to the moon. Many of her surviving creations were either forced back into her mind, executed, or just simply allowed to live among the rest of the worlds ponies. Despite never changing back into normal ponies, these 'new' ponies of the night managed to function into society as well as any pony else could before them. They are naturally nocturnal, but few of them like to train themselves to sleep during the night and live during they day, while the ponies trapped in Luna's sub-conscience can still be summoned through Luna even to this day

Simple answer:

Bat ponies are not real ponies, they are brought into being by Luna's magic, similar to The Shadowbolts.

 

Creative answer:

 

Bat ponies are not real ponies, they are spirits. Unlike alicorns, who are essentially gods who embody characteristics of the world (the day, the night, love), lesser spirits have little purpose than self preservation. Long before the founding of Equestria, the batwings roamed the land, feasting on wildlife and other lesser spirits. These dark creatures worshiped Luna, as the day's sun caused them to painfully lose their corporeality, eventually killing them. When the sisters came to defend the pony tribes from attack, the Batwings surrendered to Luna. She brought them back to the castle, deep in the Everfree forest. Luna made them her personal guards and allowed them to hunt the monsters that plagued the Everfree forest. After Discord was defeated and the sisters moved to Canterlot, the Batwings stayed at their mistress' side.

 

When Luna succumbed to her insane jealousy of her sister, they could no longer recognize the gentle princess that had tempered their brutal nature. Nightmare Moon declared that their love for her did not matter, all she cared about were the ponies that slept during her night. When Nightmare Moon was imprisoned, the batwings were devastated. They understood it was necessary, but the love for their goddess was undying. Celestia allowed them to stay as part of the royal guard, but they declined. Instead, they returned to deep in the Everfree Forest, waiting for a time where their goddess would return to them, sane and whole.

The bat-ponies were once simply Luna's honor guard, but after she lost against Celestia, Celestia cursed them to be forever marked as traitors to the crown by making them look like bats. They cannot breed with other pony species, and so they forever keep their appearance as bat ponies. Now that Luna has returned, their purpose has also returned, and although Celestia has offered to change them back they claim it is their calling card of sorts now, a look to honor and remember their Princess by.

A by product of Luna's angsty teenage years (that lasted centuries) when she ran away from home and joined a death metal band, the Bleeding Shadows, were the costumes and makeup she kept in the cellar. Because her band was supposed to last centuries more, she stockpiled a lot, and when nopony ended up being interested in her music, she had a mountain of black dye, gothic dress, and leather garments left over. Since it was nightmare night, and she was the princess, several of Canterlot's Royal Guards had to wait patiently as she applied foul-smelling makeup and covered their wings with leather in order to make a proper spooky royal appearance. The makeup took weeks to come off and they were the laughingstock of the royal guard for many months after.
