Possibly writing essay on bronies, would like input from others

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this thread, please move it if it fits better somewhere else.

So, I have to write an essay for a writing class this semester, and I get to choose the topic. It needs to be about something controversial, and I have to argue a point. I'd like to write it on something I'm actually interested in, and my teacher is looking for essays about things she hasn't read about before, so I thought I'd try and find a way to make bronies work with the prompt I've been given. I was hoping to write about bronies and how they have become a sort of controversial topic.

I'll be writing four smaller essays to put together into one big, 10-15 page essay. The first is just background information on my topic, and basically just what my topic is all about. The second is what the cause of the issue is, how we got to the point we're at now. The third is about what is being done now to solve the issue, and the fourth is about what could be done in the future to help solve the problem.

I was just posting to ask if anybody has any ideas for things I could bring up in the essay, good resources that I could use, just anything you think would help. I have some ideas, but I would be interested in hearing input from other people, I'm sure there's a million things I haven't thought of.

There is no guarantee that I will definitely use this topic, but if I can make it work then I think I would have a lot of fun with it.

Thanks :)

I hope this helps, but I would suggest the following outline just as a way to begin.

1. Background about Bronies in general, who they are, what is common to all of them

2. How the MLP became popular among the adult male audience, as the audience grows how did traditional gender norms (in other words, that men like blue, girls like pink, etc) get challenged? What is the significance of this?

3. What issues do bronies face? What is being done by fans now to deal with criticism or negative social reaction?

4. What can be done in the future to overturn tradition gender norms and stereotypes so that groups like bronies won't be looked down upon?

What do you think?

Is great that you are doing this! I agree with TheEngineer's points. Even the manliest of men from societies where gender roles are strict can enjoy this show. I seem to enjoy it, I have a beard, I am strong and I come from the Former Soviet Union. Growing up I was taught that girls like this and boys shouldn't like what they liked. I bypassed that though!

All I can think of that is little helpful...

Bring up types of bronies...

Closet, quiet, public, über.. Etc

But the idea on an essay about bronies... That's a good idea... I was thinking about it... Then I decided not to... Since I'm still a quiet bronie...

Good luck

Thanks to everyone who has replied, you've all given me some great ideas and I've got a good idea of where I'm going with this essay now. I'm always open to more suggestions if anyone else has something else they'd like to pitch in :)

I don't know if schools still give out extra credit for doing interviews with the people related to the subject or not, but at the very least you could use it to fill a page or two. ;)

Anyway, you could ask the random bronies what thier reasons for getting into the show were, and what thier favorite character(pony) is and to go into depth as to why they relate with that particular pony. That's my two cents. :D
