To me he blends into th background-ponies really easily didnt even noticed him until I read some things on the internet... Theres alot of things out there that started small be somehow gained a huge fan following: Hetalia, Vocaloid, Touhou Project, and MLP of course. All of these properties have characters that briefly appeared, or little information about said characters is given to the people, and the fanbase went nuts creating a mass amount of fanfiction, art, and videos. Builds and develops these characters, in other words. Derpy is one of them. It could also be that some people became Derpy fans after seeing interpretations of her character from other fans. Derpy is special because she was probably the first background pony to be embraced by the fans due to her derped eyes. Obviously this was an animation error originally, but she became popular enough for the animators to keep her eyes as they were and have her as an easter egg for those of us who know who she is and who like her. Ponies get popular by doing something different. Lyra became popular because she sat like a human. Derpy became popular because of her eyes. Trixie became popular because, she was, well, Trixie. People took a liking to those characters and they would all love to see a separate episode featuring each of those ponies. Personally I would think that would be a cool idea to change the focus off of the mane 6 and focus on some of the background ponies. Since animators began deliberately making her eyes derped she has been a symbol of the bronies, a nod from the animators to the fans. I don't see it as a bad thing that developers included something that the fans came up with. Batbrony 16,055 October 7, 2012 Share October 7, 2012 (edited) I agree with what a lot of other ponies have said on this thread; I think that the biggest reason that Derpy has such a big following is because she was one of the first and most obvious instances of the show's creators making an easter egg for and sending a shout-out to the then still young brony community, once they started making her a regular background character with cameo appearances! That, and she's so awesome and cute!!! I personally love what type of a personality the fanbase has developed for her; we're seriously probably responsible for most of the character traits that have become attributed to her!!! No. The point is, while she got recognized because of her derped eyes, people managed to expand upon her and making her an actual fanon character with a personality that cbuld very well be deeper then the mane 6. But the fact that the fandom responded so strongly to it made the creators keep her that way on the show. Eventuely this lead to her being refered to as derpy and getting voiceover lines in the last roundup. And this just showed that we where able to even have a lasting impact on the show, I know it was removed in later versions of the episode but still... Plus shes pretty adorable.... I love how innocent she is when it comes to making said mistakes; she doesn't mean it. Anyway, yeah, she was an animation error, but even without the fans making headcanon things for her, she kind of started to develop a personality of her own. She didn't have any lines until The Last Roundup, but she started having mini-scenes, sort of. Things like her appearing in the snowglobe in A Friend in Deed. Or this scene: Plus, the fact that it became a sort of game almost to try and spot her. I don't know, I feel she already kind of had a personality as a background pony before the fans went more crazy with her. That's why I like her, anyway. Derpy's main speaking part was removed, even, from the regular showing of the show. Which sucks.
