Deconstructing Rainbow Dash - A critical opinion discussion

I can see why some wouldn't like her, but considering her overall development and the personal & social struggles she's had to endure, I see her as possibly the second most developed of the Mane 6; behind only Rarity.

Yeah, if she were a real person, she and I probably wouldn't have much in common, but she's still pretty cool in my eyes. She can be annoying, but as a character that helps endear her to me, in a way.

@Asbel Lhant, thread already existed. Merged.

At this point all of the Mane Six and major characters have a thread exactly like this.

I've said about as much in defense of Dashie as I have Rares. What it comes down to for me is that I see a lot of myself (mostly my younger self) in her. That makes her a personal character. You see, it doesn't matter if it is a Dickinson poem or a pony -  personal interpretation wins more often than not. No justification is ever needed fort what a person enjoys in a character. Nor is the answer to the OP an indictment of the responding individual.

Dashie is awesome. 'nuff said.

Princess Celestia, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity and Rainbow Dash, always seem to be in someone's reticle, and they are not afraid nor hesitate to shoot. Normally, I avoid these threads, since they can led to flame wars, say what you want of Rainbow Dash, say what you will of anypony, but you are playing with someone's emotions, because Rainbow Dash has her fans too, everypony in the mane six have had thoughtlessness and blight, just like people in real life, it's called mortality, the fact that the ponies display such human characteristics, is what allowed the brony fandom to grow and persist. Rainbow Dash is a character with a lot of depth, she can be emotional, assertive, and have a love of reading, but if you keep the blemishes on your eyes long enough, soon you cannot see the duplicity that makes up Rainbow Dash, I love how she is gentle with Fluttershy, when she needs to be, and I love her blossoming relationship with Twilight Sparkle, dislikes threads like these, disheartens me for being a brony, I don't mind anyone's opinion of characters from MLP, however, if too much negativity is gravitated toward anypony, some has to challenge that with positivity, I love Rainbow Dash and Rarity, for who they are, not for someone else's wishes they have to be.

I also updated the title as I pointed out elsewhere, there is no way that only one person doesn't like RD. Also a critical opinion that feels more like an approach using apologetics as a motivation with a topic title that is an obvious fallacy is not a good representation.

I dislike rainbow dash. She acts like she is better than everyone else at everything.

That's because she is better than everyone, at most things at least. If you can back it up, you can take pride in it. There is nothing wrong with that.

I can't stand Rainbow Dash half the time, and her rabbid fanbase is even worse. I swear, she could get away with murder, as long as she went "oops, I guess I was wrong" at the end of the episode, only to have it mean nothing from the next episode on, like every other "lesson" she supposedly learned.

All fans act that way act that way about their favorite pony. It's not fair of you to single out one fanbase. Besides, Rd's never done anything terrible enough to not be forgiven for.

Nope, I really don't like RD because sometimes... She can get really, really aggressive toward other ponies. Also, mostly like all of the "great" athletes in this world, she brags about her skill.

I, honestly think Pinkie Pie is barely, if not faster than Rainbow Dash, my evidence being in "Party of One"

There's nothing wrong with taking pride in your accomplishments. And Pinkie's physics defying shouldn't count in her being faster, since it's kinda cheating.

your obviously not alone... her personality was tolerable at first but now she is just unlikable.... how she is still loved by many is beyond me

Because we understand what makes a good character better than you do apperantly

Rainbow Dash obviously suffers significant psychological issues, including Grandiose Delusions, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and an over-inflated Ego with a rock-bottom Self-Esteem.

Whether you like that in a character is up to taste...

Actually, RD, Fluttershy, and Luna's fanbases are by far, the worst. The others seem really tame by comparison (as far as ponies go).

And yes she has. She traded Fluttershy into slavery for a book...but just because a few seconds later she realized it was wrong, she gets off.

Feel free to add me on steam if you want to play something. Also don't be afraid to message and talk to me. I've had bad luck when I start a conversation, so I more then likely won't start one.

I feel awkward thinking about RD's personality because I'm friends with a guy who's effectively an introverted and less fast version of her, down to the level of some very unlikely coincidences, like both of them completely overusing the word "awesome".

But with deconstructing personalities one of the best ways to do it is with socionics.

RD is an ESTP (Extroverted, Sensing, Thinking, Perceiving. my friend, predictably, is an ISTP: Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, Perceiving)

You're making it sound worse than it is. It wasn't slavery, it was indentured servitude (huge difference), and it would've involved Fluttershy doing something that she loves anyway. Plus, RD did realize she was wrong and immediately fixed it. Fluttershy forgave her, there's no reason we shouldn't either. People make mistakes, it's part of life. You can't hold it against them. It's petty and shallow. The whole point of this show is friendship, and part of friendship is forgiving friends when they hurt you and are sorry for it. RD was sorry for it, so she should be forgiven. End of story. I guess the message of the show must not mean much to you. Why would you watch it then?

That's throwing around the very same excuses that Zhortac described.

Indentured servitude and slavery aren't actually that different. Slavery is without a contract, while indentured servery is with. Both slaves AND indentured servants are considered property. When Rainbow Dash traded Fluttershy for the rare DD book, Dash and the trader treated Fluttershy like property, whether she agreed to it or not. Also, what about 'Shy's animal friends back home? She has a whole house and animals to take care of. Why didn't they discuss that before making what should be an inhumane trade?

Characters are great if they're flawed, but you and everyone else in the last two-and-a-half pages must remember is there's a limit before you cross a line into making the character out of character and/or unlikeable. If she was the in-character, likeable Dash many of us grew to know and love, then she wouldn't have made such a careless, dangerous decision in the first place. Her immediate remorse and realization aren't enough when her stupidity was inexcusable. Friendship Is Magic has a quality standard to expect, and one of them is keeping the characters intelligent, in character, three-dimensional, and likeable. Trade Ya! falls well below that standard; Dash's horrendous characterization and decision-making are two of those problems.

If you ask me Rainbow Dash isn't mean enough! I love her, because she's the only thing close to resembling Bender (from Futurama) on MLP FIM.  And I love her for being a show off.

So, I love her because she's like Bender.

I think the reason why a lot of people like Rainbow Dash is the simple fact that she is a tomboy, and therefore the most relatable for many male fans to latch onto. Also a bright blue pegasus with a rainbow colored mane is a very cool design, and probably the most memorable out of all the mane 6.

There are times when I love Rainbow Dash, and times when I hate her. Sleepless in Ponyville was Rainbow at her absolute best because it portrayed her as a friendly babysitter like figure. Hurricane Fluttershy was also a close second as it showed her in a similar, likable, way.

I actually don't hate The Mysterious Mare Do Well because it addressed a lot of problems with her character and taught her a valuable lesson, but May The Best Pet Win is when she came off as the biggest jerk in Ponyville. There are other times when I hate her as well, I think the writers often get a bit too carried away with making her the Han Solo of the group, and put so much cockiness into a lot of her lines that she borderlines unlikable.

I do think however that she has grown as a character. In season 1 and 2 she was VERY arrogant, but in the later seasons she seems to have quietened down a bit. I do love it when she gets super excited though, that's adorable.
