We all expand a little on canon: some of us verbally, others in fanfiction, and still others in fanart. Sometimes it's a ship that's been hinted at, or other times it's a scene that should have been expanded upon but wasn't. Whatever the instance or example, we all have some form of headcanon. Leave logic at the door, because this is the thread in which to share your own personal canon!

Mine are as follows:

Rarity x Fancy Pants: Let's forget about Blueblood. [i already have.] I've always liked these two together, even over Fleur de Lis. Despite being enjoyable, I believe Fancy Pants and Rarity have a little something going on, and he visits Ponyville occasionally to drop by Carousel Boutique.

Rainbow Dash's Family Raised Fluttershy: We haven't seen much of Fluttershy or Dash's backstory, except that they were close growing up. I have no adequately explained reason for this piece of headcanon, except that it makes for an extremely good fanfiction idea.

Applejack Is An Orphan: This is quite obvious. We haven't seen AJ's parents, nor have they even been mentioned. It's my belief that they are in fact, thoroughly dead.

Fleur de Lis is Blueblood's Sister: No explainable reason for this either, except that they're the epitome of gorgeousness for both sexes, which sort of puts them together. They're also roughly the same age, I think. #shrug

Octavia Is OCD: I love her, she's my favorite pony, but for some reason I see her as extremely OCD, and disliking physical contact. I don't know, something about her droll expression makes me think "obsessive compulsive disorder". I also think it would make her character quite a bit more interesting.

DisPie: Why do I even have to explain this?

So what about the rest of you? What's your headcanon, odd though it may be? As you can see, I'm no poster child for sane ideas.

Whenever the show leaves something up to interpretation, in come the fans to fill in the blanks. We all have our own theories as to what occurs before, after, and behind the scenes of the show, and I'd like us all to share them.

This two threads have been merged into an already existing thread that serves the same purpose. Please use the search function to check if a thread already exists before creating your own.

THAT. Made my night. You sir can count yourself as having one fan of your head cannon for I truly enjoyed your conspiracy theory on the origination of the Changling Queen.

Thanks, dude or dudette, and thanks to Sparkling Twilight as well. Truth be told, the theory isn't 100% mine. The Love Poison Princess is Chrysalis thing was inspired by the Disorderly Conduct tumblr. I just added the Crystal Empire connection, lack of sinister motive on the Prince's part, and the interpretation of how the poison turned her evil.

The only problem is that it doesn't explain where her subjects came from. My guess is that they are ponies from the kingdoms she's conquered who have been completely drained of their love and identity.

Think of it as a combination of the Borg and the One Ring's effect on Gollum.

I'm pretty new to the fandom, so mine may very well mirror others that people have already come up with, but here goes:

*Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle don't have their cutie marks yet because they'll eventually be the first ponies to get a special "triad" mark that all three of them share because of their friendship. The marks will appear after an especially daring adventure near the end of the series, or perhaps in a film, and the reveal will have all of Ponyville present. They'll see the marks before the CMC's do, and *gasp* really loudly. CMC's will be like, "Hey - what's everypony looking at?" Either Twilight or Princess Celestia will explain the significance of them.

All head canon, and even show canon, are never done in a vacuum, so props to the writers for allowing (mostly by omission) the plot holes we must fill and my fellow ponies with like minded theories, that I may repeat. You know who you are even if I forgot. :-)

-Celestia and Luna were once mortal, but always royal, and might be releated in someway to Star Swirl the Bearded and the founding families of Equestria.

-The mane six are releated to the characters they played in Hearth's Warming Eve. A smart idea and might even be implied show canon.

-Princess Celestia raised Spike until both he, and Twilight, were old enough to meet and start their relationship.

-Celestia knew of the mane six prior to their meeting and the roles each would play and that Twilight would need her guidence.

-Celestia suspected that Cadence was a changeling, but could not prove it and knew Twilight would be suspicious. She also knew that only the real Cadence and Shining Armor could defeat the Queen.

-I think it is heavily implied that the Elements of Harmony seek out and control the destiny of those they wield them. They picked Luna and Celestia to wield them and did so again with the mane 6.

Oh yay, I was hoping I'd find a thread like this!
Edit: Seperating my head canon's into spoilers because this is a pretty long post.

My first head canon is about Twilight's teleport/blink spell. When she teleports, (using the constant teleporting in Applebuck Season as an example), she doesn't just instantly go from one place to another. She poofs, then half a second later reappears. My head canon is that the greater the distance, the farther INTO THE FUTURE SHE TRAVELS. The fact that it takes a second for her to reappear wouldn't make very good proof, but then in The Ticket Master it's pretty much (although probably unintentionally) confirmed. She teleports herself and Spike from a random alley in Ponyville to the library. When they were in the alley, it was day time. When they arrive at the library, it's clearly night outside. Another thing I like about this is it explains why the rest of the mane six were in her house at the time, feeling remorseful. After they had been harassing Twilight all day, they can't find her, so they were either looking at the library or were waiting for her to return. Also, I like to think the reason she was teleporting constantly in Applebuck Season was that she was practicing it. The first two times she did it, S1E2/3, she and other's teleported had a moment of daze, confusion, or even cartoonish burn marks, so she wanted to get better at it.

My second head canon would be about the parasprites. Pinkie's solution was pretty much the same as Twilight's previous attempts, only more effective. But still, all she's doing is leading the parasprites out of town in a musical fashion. Where would they go afterwards?  My theory is this: most towns have the resident Pinkie Pie equivilant. Every community is equipped with a pony that has the knowledge and ability to parade the parasprites to the next town over. This is much less cruel than, say, killing all of them, and heck, they could even make an event out of it! Every so often the parasprite parade returns, and the townsponies get out their finest tuba's and keep the music of Equestria alive. Or something, I dunnoh.

And one last sidenote, Applejack's parents are dead. This isn't head canon, they are. The shooting stars in Apple Family Reunion were confirmed to represent the dead-ness of AJ's parents. I'm fine with this, and I like the bond it's formed between AJ and Applebloom, considering AJ pretty much raised her. Although if you find that too depressing this comic is an interesting alternative.

Edited in new headcanon:

I was just in a thread about Discord and foreshadowing, and I just came up with a new headcanon that I love. It's just...it's beautiful. Starswirl the Bearded's spell was supposed to 'fix' a pony with the wrong destiny, like we see it do at the end of episode, after Twilight completed it. Just because it was only half-complete doesn't mean it would swap around the mane six's cutie marks. The reason Celestia wanted Discord on team good was (well besides so that he wouldn't wreak havoc errywhere) to swap the mane six's cutie marks. He could definitely do it, he's got the reality warping chaos inducing skills we all love. I realize that this is not what happened but in my mind it fits very well, and perfectly explains a whole lot.

Alicorns are only immortal if they don't feel love. Like, crush kinda love. In my headcanon, Cadance is mortal because she has felt love, (durr, princess of love), but Celestia and Luna cannot feel love because they have to be there for Equestria.

Rainbow Dash's mom is Firefly.

Surprise is 'Granny Pie'.

Fluttershy's dad was once a Wonderbolt, and she feels like she has to live up to his legacy, explaining her shyness and not revealing her family.

Teleportation spells cannot be used unless you're target is in your line of sight. This is why most fanfics and people complaining that "why don't they teleport" kinda ticks me off.

The only head canon i can really think of right now is that Spitfire is actually Scootaloo's mother. How else would Scootaloo be able to go to school and have a scooter? i doubt shes a thief and since we've never seen her parents, we can only assume shes an orphan or something

that or she doesn't say she is Spitfires kid, that or Spitfire told her to stay quite about it so scootaloo will be safe and will be treated like any other pony.

In my mind, there must be at least one stallion in Ponyville who has a massive crush on Pinkie Pie.  And whoever that is, he was totally stoked during the "Too Many Pinkie Pies" incident.  Maybe he and one of the Pinkie duplicates even ran away together before Twilight sent the rest back into the pond.  If not, he was pretty devastated when they all went away.

I would also like to believe that a few of the Pinkie Pies left Ponyville that day, and they are off pursuing lives of their own somewhere.

The theory at the end of RiM #4 makes waaaaay to much sense. Maybe the writers will incorporate it into an episode, but until then, I'm headcanonizing it.

Here's more head-canon from me:

-Before I watched the episode 'Games Ponies Play' and discovering Rainbow Dash's dad, I briefly thought that Rainbow Dash was actually adopted and raised by Gilda's family. When I did wtahc the episode however, I changed it so RD and Gilda's parents were family friends with each other for decades, and Gilda's parents were genuinely disappointed when they learned about what Gilda did in 'Griffon The Brush Off'.

-Griffons and Dragons are by far the only known carnivorous sentient beings that inhabit Equestria.

-According to Equestrian historians, Griffons were the first non-pony sentients that Equestrian ponies have encountered.

-Contrary to popular belief, Equestrian ponies are somewhat tolerant toward the meat-eating of their non-pony neighbors (like the Griffons), but the legal and social acceptance is limited to allowing the consumption of insects, fish, eggs, and whatever is hunted in the Everfree Forest (as a side note, Griffons, for aforementioned reasons are the only Equestrian citizens that are known to apply hunting and butchering as trades).

Why don't we ever see humans in Equestria?

they're hiding, the ponies stole all their clothes.

The only headcanon I have is this:

Rainbow Dash's mom is an Earth Pony.  Actually, it was originally that *both* her parents were Earth Ponies, but that was invalidated by A) the fact that she was raised in Cloudsdale, where Earth Ponies can't go without a special spell, and B)we saw what Iassume to be her dad in the "Games Ponies Play" flashback, and' he's of course a pegasus. So it's since been changed to "Earth pony mom, but raised by her pegasus dad in Cloudsdale."

Why?  Well how perfectly ironic would it be if the fastest, most competitive flyer in the series was the daughter of some slow footed Earth Pony?  It would be like Rarity and her parents- somehow perfectly fitting because they're her total opposite.

But then that implies that RD's mom either broke it off with her dad, or she died, and that's kinda depressing either way....

... Okay, *new* headcanon:  both parents are pegasi, but they're really weak flyers a la Fluttershy.

"It's About Time"
Logic states that there must have existed a timeline BEFORE Twilight met Future Twilight. She had to have lived through the series of events ONCE before a future Twilight could've gone back to such a timeline. This, fillies and gentlecolts, is my headcanon.

TIMELINE 1: THE ORIGINAL

In the original timeline, Twilight has no idea a disaster is going to occur. She and her friends have no reason to be preparing for such a thing. On one particularly sunny morning, Fluttershy is somewhere. Pinkie Pie is somewhere else. Twilight is reading. Suddenly, Cerberus is running a muck in Ponyville, away from the gates of Tartarus, allowing the evil creatures from within to escape. In the time it takes Twilight to get him back to Tartarus (or if she even IS ABLE TO) at least one or two creatures have escaped and are wreaking havoc on Equestria. Why do I doubt Twilight could get Cerberus back in time? Because, let's look at why she WAS able to in the EPISODE TIMELINE. Fluttershy was there, because they were all working together to disaster proof Ponyville. So she was able to calm Cerberus. And then Pinkie was there, prepared with the knowledge of where all the emergency balls are stuffed around Ponyville. Without the immediate help, disaster. Whether or not Twilight is able to save Equestria in this timeline is irrelevant. For one reason or another, be it at least one death, she decides she MUST change things. She goes back in time to warn Twilight of the disaster.

TIMELINE 2: AND THEN EVERYTHING WAS OK

Twilight is suddenly met with herself, from the future! She is filled with questions about the future, but this version of Twilight has gone through some serious suffering. She's come from a reality filled with disaster, and isn't about to let Twilight distract her from her goal. She warns past Twilight of the disaster to come, and how she can fix things.

So she does. Twilight is prepared with Flutters and Pinkie and they send Cerberus back to Tartarus. Then, Twilight realizes that this could rip a nice, juicy hole in the fabric of reality. Because there was now no disaster, she isn't going to back in time and warn Twilight! Simple solution, though. All SHE has to do is go back in time anyway, and warn Twilight. Sooo,

TIMELINES 3 THROUGH X: IN WHICH EVERYTHING GOES FROM FINE TO LESS THAN FINE

It is impossible to guess how many timelines go between this and the next one, so I'm using X. Twilight from Timeline 2 goes back and warns our new Twilight of the dangers to come. Or she doesn't, X could be 0. See, THIS Twilight hasn't gone through the same suffering Twilight 1 has. She's going to be less able to counter New Twilight's wave of questioning, and may not be able to get the warning across. However many timelines it takes, when one of them goes back,

TIMELINE X+1: DISASTER PROOF PONYVILLE

Twilight from Timeline X, having successfully followed previous Timeline Twilight's advice to bring Cerberus back, continues the cycle and warns this new Twilight. Only, she doesn't do so well. New Twilight distracts her too much from warning her of the future to come, forcing Twilight to FREAK OUT and start disaster proofing all of Ponyville. Luckily for her, she caught Cerberus in this net of disaster proofing. However, she doesn't realize that that was the potential disaster. She decides to go back in time and tell herself not to worry so much. I'd like to note that in this timeline she looks like Metal Gear Twilight because of the freaking out she went through.

TIMELINE X+2: THE EPISODE TIMELINE

In this timeline, Twilight is visited by herself from the future, looking all messed up and wearing latex. The future Twilight tries to tell Twilight there isn't anything to worry about, and that she should not freak out about the future, but fails. This causes our current Twilight to flip out and start disaster proofing Ponyville. At the end of the episode she realizes she should go back in time to warn herself not to worry about the future so much, and BAM. The next timeline is EXACTLY like this one, and the cycle continues infinitely, and if it ever varies, it is very slightly.

Well that was fun. I have to get up in 4 hours to go to school so I should probably stop typing about cartoons.

I'm sorry, but logic states no such thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootstrap_paradox As long as it's self-consistent, a stable time loop can occur (according to what has been worked out thus far.) Common sense might state that, but common sense is not the same as logic.

As for my headcanon - A changeling cannot kill the pony they wish to mimic, since the illusion is maintained by a link to the original form. (Admittedly, this view is influenced by Chrollo's nen ability from Hunter x Hunter). It does explain why Chrysalis had to imprison Cadence rather than just killing her.

I actually had a similar headcanon about that episode, only mine operated under the assumption that the time spell worked along the same lines as the paradox-correcting time code from Futurama.

Basically, Twilight sends herself back in time to prevent something from happening (not necessarily Cerberus, maybe the dam burst, or something), and the time spell manipulates this new timeline to force Twilight to send back a new message that's exactly the same as the first one, thus continuing the cycle and preventing a paradox.

In my head-canon, ponies can't upgrade to Alicorns, but Twilight get's to do it, so that kinda voided the canon.

Apart from that, there isn't really much else, apart from that there were civilisations in Equestria before the ponies, which were made up of pseudo-ponies and that wars tore the land apart, and that the species evolved into the ponies we know today.

Ah, that's what I get for trying to come up with headcanons at 3 am. I thought it up in the Its About Time discussion thread, because people were asking why Twilight would have gone back in time in the first place if there was never a disaster. I shouldn't have claimed that it's IMPOSSIBLE for there to not be an original timeline, just that that's the premise of my headcanon. I think I was looking at it from a Stein's Gate point of view, but I just woke up so I don't want to start going too far into time travel. You're entirely right, it is not impossible.

I agree with Zerobot.  Whenever I see this sort of thing in fiction, I assume that there must have been an alternate timeline that was changed, and that the audience never saw.  For example, in "The Terminator," John Connor sends his own father back in time to save his mother.  But if John Connor had not existed, he would not have been around to send his father back in time.  So I figure that  Kyle Reese must have originally gone back in time for some other reason, in a future where there was no John Conner.  Then he fathered a child who became the leader of the humans, and those events changed the reason that he went back in time.  Eventually, after who knows how many changes to the past, it sort of stabilizes - so that the time travel is causing the time travel.

This is the only way that it makes any kind of sense in my mind.  So that is my "head-cannon" on such time travel stories.

I like Zerobot's version of Twilight's story.

One of the only one's I have so far is:

  • Zecora's homeland is much like modern day south Africa and other 3rd world countries. All ways in some form gang war or civil war.
  • The royal guards are called "The Royal Equsterian Guard".
  • The guards are trained to do multiple jobs that range from being a bodyguard, to liberating lands far from Equsteria that have been dictated by ruthless rulers.
  • If guns begin to be made, The Crystal Empire will have a booming industry in various combat sights.
  • Sombra has many children and/or ways of resurrecting.

My head-cannons?

I'll have to 'spoilerize' them all!

  1. Celestia and Luna are not immortal, but have a very extended life span, or probably just lengthen it by using their powerful magic. They can still die and get injured (as shown in the S2 finale), but their magic can heal them very quickly too, which is why they haven't died yet.
  2. Fluttershy is the oldest Mane 6, and Rainbow Dash is the youngest, due to Rainbow possibly skipping a grade or two of flight school, and Fluttershy having to repeat multiple times.
  3. Starswirl the bearded will make a comeback in Season 4. Something just tells me that he'll be back, as a villan, a helper/mentor to Twilight? I haven't got a clue! (....Winter Wrap, Up Winter Wrap up!)
  4. Up until it was confirmed, I thought that Applejack's parents were just travelling apple sellers, and didn't visit much.
  5. Applebloom was born soon after AJ returned from Manehatten. Her parents left her to be raised by Granny Smith, like AJ and Big Mac.
  6. Rainbow Dash's mother is still around, contrary to others' belief.
  7. Rainbow Dash has a big/little brother.
  8. Pinkie Pie's family will be back in Season 4.
  9. Inkie and Blinkie Pie will have a speaking part when they meet up Pinkie again in Season 4.
  10. I got nothing else..

I've had some more head canon bits swirling around my brain for a few days now. Take em or leave em.

  • For better or worst, griffons are naturally very proud, as evidenced by Gilda's fixation on being cool and the fact that Gustave loved his eclairs more passionately then you will ever love your spouse.
  • Changelings, in addition to sapping love from victims due to their shortage of the emotion, are carnivores. Would explain the sharp teeth and lack of kitten-corpse piles in the comic.
  • Derpy comes from a prominent earth pony family in Manehatten. Her full name is Derpina Torpe Hooves.
  • Trixie earned her cutie mark in performing stage magic, but has always thought she was meant for something greater, and after years of performing her act and trying to convince others she has "real" magic, she's become wrapped up in her stage persona.
  • Rainbow Dash is the only child of a single parent, which would explain why she isn't the best sister she could probably be to Scootaloo at this point.
  • Queen Chrysalis's motive has always simply been the conquest of small nations, both to feed off its inhabitants and because she probably enjoyed doing so. That was until her humiliating defeat at Canterlot. Now Chrysalis fixated on making the Royals and the Elements pay for what they did, starvation of her subjects be damned.
  • I assume the "hatch the dragon egg" test is standard for the magic school, but I doubt they have a closet full of eggs laying around. I dunno why, but I think the idea that Spike's egg was hundreds of years old before being hatched is kinda cool. Irony!
  • Rarity is from Vanhoover like her parents, but dropped the Canadian accent in favor of an English one after visiting Canterlot at a young age and becoming inspired to pursue that life.
  • Celestia became disconnected from the Elements after being forced to use them against her own sister. Shortly afterwards, Celestia realized that she has left too many matters on the boilerplate; Discord could break free of his stone prison, The Crystal Empire might reappear and be defenseless against Sombra should he also return, and someone had to search for the next Elements before Nightmare Moon escaped the moon. And thus, Celestia used age spells to make sure she'd be around to defend her people and correct her mistakes. She'd keep this up for centuries if necessary, which it was. The only reason Luna also seems immortal is because she's only recently gotten out of the moon.

So I have a lot and I was thinking of doing a podcast explaining them. Here's a list.

- first, I support the theory that alicorns are born through genetics. The reason they aren't seen around is because the leaders of Equestria aren't nice and want to be better than everyone else.

Celestia and Luna used age spells to keep themselves alive. Why doesn't every unicorn use age spells? It's extremely difficult. Celestia being an alicorn and bearer of the elements of harmony could cast the spells. Wait, the elements aren't hers anymore! This could be a problem.

- chrysalis has been around for a lot longer than we think. A long time ago, there must have been a whole royal family, but when chrysalis got in, she slowly picked off each pony of the royal family, and when it was just Celestia, and disguised as luna, she tried to take Celestia by using the whole longer night thing as cover. She still has Celestia fooled that she is Luna. Since there are no males in the royal family, Celestia had to keep herself alive and when the elements were gone, she needed a replacement.

Season 3 actually did a wonderful job of taking my headcanon and punching holes straight through it, almost as if it were written entirely for the purpose of doing so. Extremely impressive on the writers' part there.  What I have left:

This fanfic occurred right after the episode The Mysterious Mare Do Well.

The Mane Six members are descended from the characters in the Hearth's Warming Eve story.

Commander Hurricane invented the Sonic Rainboom and used it to kick some serious flank in Gryphon wars.

Pinkie Pie has a massive crush on Rainbow Dash (Season 3 actually encouraged this one fairly well in my opinion img-1381748-1-wink.png )

Not as big as the others, but I have this mental image of Rainbow Dash cuddling with Fluttershy at night while they were both at flight camp. Dash protected her from the bullies, but also needed some help with what they were going through. Neither of them would ever talk about this because Dash felt embarrassed about needing to do something like that for comfort.

Forgot my Apple Family headcanon :P. Her hat belonged to her dad, and Apple Bloom is adopted.
