OC opinion thread

Well guys, this is my first OC.

He's basically meant to be an allegory of the human quest for flight. Since the dawn of time, man has stared into the heavens and dreamed of soaring amongst the skies with the creatures blessed with wings of their own. Unfortunately, we aren't born with wings, so we forged our own. And from our humble beginnings 109 years ago, we've gone from hopping across a small field in Kittyhawk, NC to exploring the heavens beyond our world.

 

Such is the story of Cirrus, a pegasus who was born without wings. However, the call of the skies was strong in him, so he did the only thing he could do, and like humanity, he forged himself a set of wings.

 

So, is he...kosher? For lack of a better term? I've never RP'd before, but I'm familiar with concepts to be avoided, like Mary Sue qualities or making the character overpowered. I'd like to think he's believable. He still has a lot of struggles to overcome. He's only just begun to fly, and he is still struggling to overcome the insecurities caused by that (along with being a blank flank for so long). He's meant to also be developing a bit of a hubris streak, which will cause him some troubles in the future as he still learns to fly but occasionally bites off more than he can chew (things like that can be hatched out in RP).

 

Sorry if I'm overthinking this. I originally created him for use somewhere else that had much more stringent RP requirements, hence the long back story and personality description (never actually RP'd there, thought, just made a character while I was there) and I'm still in that "mode" so to speak.

This is a very serious question to all OC creators, as I'm still relatively new:
 

Are you ever tempted to have something about your OC similar to that of say, your favorite character of a show, video game, etc.?

 

I'm asking this because I'll always watch AMV's and the actual footage of characters I like from numerous fandoms, and yet I always feel tempted to have something about my OC similar to them. However, I don't want to because I want to be original. Most of the time, I try to listen to music for motivation for a storyline, or to make my OC (Dusk) better. That doesn't help, it only helps heighten the temptation, as the songs I like are often used for said AMV's.

 

I have thought of many things on my own, but it just seems, to me, like I'm using similar moments between Dusk and characters I like, and I try to tie them together to fit the storyline. And although that makes Dusk look better (to an extent), I don't want that because it ruins the story by being cliche.

 

I just want this advice, as I've had this trouble for a long time, and I just want some help to get over it, be creative and have my own thoughts and ideas.

I get my ideas from numerous movies, and maybe sometimes I get the original concepts for characters from favorites of mine in a specific fandom, but I work to make them their own character, if that makes sense. Like, for example, the Ragtag Twins were originally Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter series. They aren't quite exact clones of these wizarding twins anymore. There's no problem with borrowing ideas, personally, as long as you strive to make your character unique from whatever inspired the idea.

I'm not sure if I should even poast most of my OCs here. I have a few, but I've never used them for anything, and therefore haven't really worked out their characters yet. They're still in beta stage right now. I don't even have any art for any of them

Like I said before, the backstory is very nicely done, no complaints there (though since Luna is back now, he should probably be very careful when creating demand for his services)

Not a fan of the ponycreator design though (never liked the egghead) and the cutiemark just seems weird, since they don't usually include letters.

I'm working on this new character, Cascade. The idea sprung into mind at about three o'clock this morning. Tired ideas are best ideas. This is the best I can get with ponycreator. I'm going to draw it soon.

meet Scarfy Hooves a ponifed version of me. i love scarfs i'm kinda of shy and bashful. but very curious about everything and love to open up o my friends. My favorite color is white (and red accents it so well). Scarfy Hooves is a female pegasus

My OC's color scheme is modeled after anbu kakashi *my favorite naruto character* lol i even threw in the scarf. I feel like when you pair them next to each other you can clearly see this. This was done subconsciously but after reading this it became super apparent 

 

I don't feel this takes away creativity because. it still embodies the things you love as a human that you express though your pony. a ponifed version of you needs to show your likes, interest, emotions *through body positioning and facial expressions...at least that's how i view OC's. 

 

then again maybe everyone does it do OC's as a embody meant of themselves....so yeah

ballher....or baller means really awesome. 

 

it drives from a basket ball term someone who is super good at basketball is called a ballher and is considered to be balling up the court. and i use it to describe anything that is super good. and i just add the H into the word ballher cuz that's how it sounds when you pronouce it with a funny emphasis. lol figured  id give you a little back story

It's even thrown in like it's an afterthought. I couldn't help myself. 'Oh, and she has a pet duck.' You get weird strokes of inspiration when you're behind on sleep, and it's four o'clock in the morning.

Well, I definitely like Supernova the most. The persona switch is kinda bizarre, but is creative, and interesting. But what I don't get is, if he was so shy originally, why would he boast to all the fillies that he would go into "space"? Also, the design is quite nice.

 

Serene Night is quite basic. So I'm not going to say much about that one. Also, the design for her is my favorite of the three.

 

As far as Squeebee goes: Never been a fan of Alicorns, and I don't think pony genetics really work that way. She's cute, but I don't think the backstory works for an alicorn. And seeing as she is not associated with any alicorns, it doesn't really make sense, to me at least.
