Mayor Mare in a cage...a reference to something?

Just before the rematch, S3E5 showed Mayor Mare in a cage.  My first thought was "hah, that's like Deckard Cain in Diablo 2!"

I realize that it probably goes back much further than that...wise/old leader caged in town square is probably older than dirt.  Anybody seen this potential trope in other films/games/etc?

I've seen several history books showing chinese people put in those cages and taken as slaves when China was a colony in Qin dynasty but I think that it's probably just diablo 2 reference.

It could be another reference to the story of Perseus, but I get the feeling I'm wrong and that there is something even more similar to what happened in the episode, but I just can't put my finger on it.

Meh, it doesn't seem like to much of a reference. I've seen multiple shows/films that have the villiain taking over and the main character or whatever isolated and trapped.

Agreed, I just figured it was one of those necessary conditions that comes with the old "evil villain takes over a town and starts making everyone's lives miserable" routine.

Actually I thought of the film 'Willow' myself, not because of the leader being in the cage but simply because of the styling of the cage.

Looks like somebody on My Little Brony found a screenshot of the part I was thinking of.  I wonder if he took that screenshot himself, because I couldn't find that one in a google image search yesterday!

spite of my rage, im still just a mare in a cage. i doubt its much of a reference, but more of the typical medieval thing where the ones formerly in power are placed on display for the rest to see.

Cannibal Holocaust reference?

Maybe Trixie was planning on eating her.

I doubt the writers were thinking that dark though.. Perhaps.

I'm just troubled. My mind naturally gravitates towards pony on pony canibalism.

IMO, it was just the writers of the show poking fun at how useless the mayor characters are in these kinda shows, like they did a lot in PowerPuff Girls. I have a meme/comic thingy somewhere that's somewhat relevant...jus a sec...

Ha, major nostalgia High-Five!

Also, another case of Sleight of hand (hoof?) triumphing over raw power, there might be a connection  .

Now I feel old  .

Me too, glad you thought of th slight of hand thing because that totally passed me by. I think I'm going to have to rewatch that now.

it is Willow, a good film and quite a sneaky reference being made, they pack so many into a episode and series sometimes its hard to keep up
